Iowan Camerina Gonzalez Lizzaraga, an Army specialist, accused a superior of rape. She was discharged. Then, her family found her dead.
Although she wanted to serve her country, she found herself fighting the military system at the end of her life.

Some ✨personal news✨ after almost three years in Des Moines - I’m headed back to Chicago in March as one of
@BlockClubCHI
newest reporters to cover the Loop!!
I can’t express how excited I am to be joining such an amazing team!
Had the opportunity to meet up with
@nhannahjones
and the 4 other Black women heading the new 1619 Freedom School in Waterloo.
The program is aimed at improving literacy skills through "liberating instruction centered on Black American history."
This is Pacifique Mushishi - he is a resident at Cedar Terrace Apartments. He flagged me down and asked me to share his message and to tag

it has been an honor to bring diverse stories into your homes, but no worries I'm not going far. You can catch my reporting in the pages of The Des Moines Register. I'm excited for this opportunity to flex different journo muscles
I will never forget when I worked for a bougie Chicago restaurant and they fired me because I was attending night classes for grad school.
When I came in for my last check I gave them a written request for my personnel records - girl was scared.
Who Wanted To Move Taste Of Chicago From Grant Park? I filed a FOIA to try and find out using key works “Taste of Chicago” and “Grant Park” between some city officials.
An example of what I got back…nothing to see here I guess 🤷🏽♀️
If anyone is wondering why the
@iowadot
is so persistent with the Move Over Law...this is why. This happened today when a motorist failed to move over.

Some ✨personal news✨ I’ve officially been promoted as the city government reporter for Des Moines.
I’m a couple weeks away from my one year anniversary at the Register - so shout out to all my great coworkers and readers who’ve supported me along the way.
Seeing a lot of disinformation about what's going on at the Iowa Capitol today. There's no "insurrection."
BLM in Des Moines has been hosting protests at the Capitol since last year. Last year they rallied to restore voting rights. This session for various bills mentioned below.
Witnesses told me the protest was peaceful and the girl was asking for Iowa State Patrol badge numbers when she was brought to the ground and arrested.
Below is the flyer for the protest
Today was my last day at WHO13 thank you to all of my sources who have trusted me with their stories, your voices matter and it’s been an honor to bring some diversity into your homes - next week I will be starting at the Des Moines Register - Cheers to new beginnings!
Iowa was basically hit by a hurricane - many people without power/water, asking for help, agriculture destroyed. Nationally it’s not being talked about.
Makes me think of Puerto Rico - except years later there are still people without power or access to clean water...
A friendly reminder that there are businesses in Iowa that implemented mask mandates before the Governor did and continue to enforce them even after the Governor ended the statewide mandate today.
Sharing something deeply personal today in hopes of creating awareness.
During my freshman year at Bradley University I suffered persistent and egregious body-shaming which ensued a culture of disordered eating at the hands of my xc/track coach Matt Esche.

I couldn’t do anything at the time because honestly could I afford a lawyer? No. But I got my MA unbothered and I know she reads my bylines so 🤷🏽♀️
For the past 2 months, Bally's has been running 2 hourly shuttles solely from Chinatown. The local alderperson found out last week and community leaders were unaware until I called them.
The shuttles highlight concerns from some as to why Chinatown is currently the sole location
Had an interview with
@jaylencavil
one of the leaders of DSM BLM - about happened at the capitol among other things. For transparency purposed I'm posting the RAW footage. It will be a long thread because of time limits.
Part 1: Issues with local media
To my fellow journalists who are and will be covering this tragedy -
Please learn how to say these babies names correctly. It matters.
If you are going to conduct interviews in this Latino neighborhood and you are not bilingual - bring a translator. IT MATTERS.
"The school had 535 students in the 2020-2021 school year, most of them Hispanic and considered economically disadvantaged. Uvalde itself is a predominantly Hispanic town."
An update because there's always more to the story. In this June 2023 letter Ald. Reilly says he will not approve any future extended outdoor dining permits on Clark Street. Currently, he's pointing his finger at the Mayor's Office.
Story is much more serious than it seems. This man was documented touching himself while looking at these women and holding up signs saying "Come on over" - also a former prosecutor said this guy should be charged.
People saying this isn't a story are...*checks notes* other men.
Everyone's talking about girl dinner but have you ever heard about reporter lunch?
It's typically between 3-5 p.m. and involves something edible that you consume in front of your computer while you wait for edits.
Remember when NASCAR setup/teardown was just going to be two weeks? Now records show the setup, teardown and the event itself will take 41 days in Grant Park.
In total the park will be booked 84 days between May/Aug for special event setup.
Meanwhile in Iowa...DMPD who couldn't make charges stick to multiple people arrested during racial justice protests in 2020 (including a journalist) is now suing a councilperson and others for "redress wrongs"... police suing citizens...
In a rare case, two Des Moines police officers are suing councilperson Indira Sheumaker and several residents to “redress wrongs” from a 2020 BLM protest.
A Drake professor at the protest said police made arrests “the worst possible way.”
Breaking News: Social justice advocate
@Indira4DSM
defeats Ward 1 incumbent Bill Gray in Des Moines City Council race.
We also have additional DSM Council winners here.
Some key points from the BLM rally today:
- It's been 43 days since Gov. Reynolds said she would sign an EO restoring votings rights
- 17 days since BLM drafted one and delivered it to the Gov.
- 98 days until the general election
BLM protestors tell me the exact opposite. An anonymous legal observer told me police encited violence. Protestors tell me there are people who were arrested that have serious injuries. A video shared with me shows an alleged choke hold on a protestor.
YEAH I WORK FOR A NONPROFIT NEWSROOM THAT PRIORITIZES HYPERLOCAL COVERAGE OF CHICAGO’S NEIGHBORHOODS AND WHEN YOU SUBSCRIBE YOU ALSO GET SIGNED UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTERS WRITTEN BY THE REPORTERS FROM THOSE COMMUNITIES PLUS WE HAVE REALLY COOL MERCH —
As national media swoops in especially since caucus season is among us - please follow local news in Iowa. The Register is one of the hardest working news organizations and will continue to cover this tragedy long after the media frenzy leaves.
THIS IS IOWA. The state’s health department has been restricting information to reporters and fielding ridiculous costs for FOIA requests. The cherry on top? FOIA requests have started being filtered through the governor’s office.
Today I interviewed Dr. Megan Srinivas. She is the only infectious disease physician in Fort Dodge for a 70 mile radius....here is why she says "Shelter in Place" needs to be implemented in Iowa

Ten of 15 candidates of color in Polk County won their races in Tuesday's election.
Others in Ames, Waterloo, West Liberty and more won races, too.
And those who didn't win say they "will run again."
New from

and I. We combed through 3,000 pages of emails from Tom Conley to city officials. This is what we found.
TW: these emails are graphic.
In my first on-air internship I was told "Honey if you ever want to be on air you're going to have to straighten your hair"
5 years later I've never straightened my hair and I don't plan on it.
Hair discrimination is real - don't let it stop you.
Years ago I was told to take a clip out of my newsreel because I was wearing braids. The news director told me I wouldn’t get a job with braids. I left the clip in and landed a job in the industry. Now, I’m wearing them on-air for the first time. Braids are professional.

DMPD had to be taken to court for body cam footage that ended up not existing since the arresting officer failed to activate it.
Andrea is among 5 journalists nationally who face ongoing charges linked to recent Black Lives Matter protests.
My arrest was not recorded by the arresting officer via body cam, as required by city policy.
Another DMPD officer failed to activate his video during the arrest of freelance photojournalist Ted Nieters while reporting on protests. His case was dismissed.

Officially turned in my key card today.
Said some goodbyes to a really great group of people and finished edits on a big story coming out in the next couple of weeks.
Someone from my hometown was getting overcharged by the local water department for months. I helped him file several FOIAS so he could see where the discrepancies were - long story short the city paid him back 98% of what he overpaid. AKA $450.
What a win. 💪🏾
BREAKING:

is NOT supporting Des Moines' Anti-Racial Profiling Ordinance - calling it a step backwards and giving enforcement authority the city's police chief.
Here's why I was in Cedar Rapids this week.
These workers recruited from Texas had been working with almost no pay for a month - they were promised living accommodations, high pay, food stipend and travel reimbursement. That's not what happened.

This is what solidarity looks like.
