One of my favorite things to show students: transform E. coli with pGLO on ampicillin plates. Incubate several days. Beautiful instruction with and without UV. Really teaches about antibiotic resistance, transformation, and medical issues. @univpugetsound @ASMicrobiology

More closeups of the weird multicolored bacteria situation. I used plasmids by @ATinyGreenCell , in E. coli. It's an exercise for students to learn how to streak one thing from a mixture. I mixed cultures with the different colors---so not cotransformation? Fascinating! @profvrr

I used an Instant Pot to sterilize microbiological media. 8 liter model, 20 min high pressure setting..three 100ml aliquots LBS liquid, one 500ml bottle w 250ml of LBS agar. After a week, no contamination on plates or liquid. Cautious success! @ASMicrobiology @univpugetsound

Folks, I don't feel really great at present. I work hard to sound upbeat, and I will keep trying. If you have the time, I would appreciate photos of dogs, snakes, and jokes. I look at photos of my former students in grad school and beyond, and that helps.

My student was more amused than anything else. Grad students said, "That's just how he/she is; nothing is meant by it." I disagree. I think it was highly unprofessional behavior, and I am communicating that fact. How embarrassing for the institution to have such a person. 2/2

So I survived, and have tenure (and will be the World's Oldest Associate Professor). Nothing is perfect: not me, & not any institution. But I'm still here. I never gave up. And I'm lucky to have had the students I do, both the ones that appreciate me, & the ones who don't. (6/6)

@neilhimself Growing up where and when I did, libraries were my refuge. There, I could explore other worlds, see how towering figures dealt with bullies, learn about history... You want to use the term “safe space”? Libraries were all that and more to me as a young boy.

Important thread to consider. One of my awesome research students was interviewing for a PhD program recently. There were faculty interviews. Everyone was awesome except one person. That person asked my student to explain their research project, then said "That's trivial." 1/2
