This might be controversial, but can we please stop normalizing bookstore book signings as launch events for all authors' books? They often don't work and they can be seriously demoralizing for authors. (A thread.)

Instead, normalize going to readers vs having readers come to you. Send authors to comic cons, farmer's markets, holiday bazaars, schools and libraries. You can still use local bookstores to support these sales and thus support them without having an event at their store.

Instead, what if you scheduled a quick meet and greet with local bookstore employees while the author's in town? Have a coffee, tell them about your books, sign some stock. Then trust them to bring what you told them to their customers.

They're also busy! Kids have after school and evening activities and weekend games and dance comps, etc. Even if they wanted to see an author in person it's tough to clear your schedule.

You have to REALLY want to meet someone to make the effort and get it on the calendar. And most authors do not command that fandom. They just don't! (Again, even if they sell very well!)

I get it. It's easy for a publisher to suggest a book launch signing. It's traditional. It's what people do--especially those without a marketing budget. But it's not working. And it's hurting authors emotionally. It needs to stop being the default.

But for authors who find them painful, stressful and anxiety inducing, normalize that it's okay not to do them. That a book can still succeed without a launch party. At the end of the day, it's your book. Do what works for you.

This is a constant problem. So many adult reviewers are literally angry that the book is not for them even when it's clearly labeled as a YA. This even happens with MG. Sorry my book for 10-12 year olds isn't sophisticated enough for you grown up person!! Argh. Makes me so mad.

We’ve had the whole site wide big discussion about YA being “for adults” and the desire for younger YA. librarians and teachers chiming in begging for younger YA. But how is that younger YA going to get off the ground if grown adults are rating it poorly for reading so young?

So then it becomes reliant on the author to try to beg family and friends to attend--just so their event doesn't look like a failure. First book? Sure, everyone may come. After that, it's going to be a chore to try to bring in a crowd.

(BTW I don't blame booksellers! they actually do a great job of advertising events, etc. But it's a losing battle because most people won't come, for the above reasons. So this can be stressful and embarrassing for them, too, as they can feel they've let the author down.)

There have been questions on why Polar Nights has the Frozen vs Frozen 2 branding since it takes place post Frozen 2. So I went and asked Disney for you. I’m told this is the franchise tag from now on for all Frozen books that are not strict retellings of Frozen 2.

#TBT The time @dpeterfreund and I did Frozen/Star Wars mash-up cosplays for DragonCon. I was Relsa (Reylsa?) with BB-Olaf and she was Hanna-Solo with Kylo Sven (the best!) I had no idea back then I'd write a Frozen book someday-I just loved Elsa! (Also, sniff, I miss @Dragoncon )

@feliciaday Universal optioned my Gamer Girl book once and I was so excited about having a girl gaming series at last. It was going to be half animation, half live action for the game/real life split. Sadly they then bought Dreamworks and had to kill the project.

This is also true at bookstores. Ask if you don’t see the book you want on the shelves. They will order it for you and maybe a few extra copies (as now they see demand for it.) Better for the author than just giving up and ordering it off Amazon.

No bridge scenes! If a scene doesn’t move the plot forward, either internally or externally, it’s got to go. It’s okay to jump to the next scene. You don’t have to walk your characters there.
