We have not gone back to the “old normal”. The pandemic is not over. We are now in the transition to a “new normal” where COVID is everywhere (even if we ignore it) and the health system is under strain even when “at rest” and at high risk during outbreaks. 🧵/1

Three conversations this week. Friend 1 came back from Europe, caught Covid on the way home. Friend 2’s elderly mum had a fall, was in hospital for a few days and caught Covid. Friend 3,had Covid a month ago, still sick and breathless. Why are we considering this normal? ☹️

My son works in medical administration. In February working in GP he caught COVID. When he told his boss, he was instructed to get back to work straight away and just wear a mask. 😞 (FYI he didn’t follow boss’ instructions and instead isolated at home until no longer infectious)

My husband and I just got home from a lovely ten day holiday. The only time I had been “away” in the last 3.5 yrs was hospital 😞so we packed the car, masked up, and drove a 3,300 km loop to Adelaide and back, lots of sightseeing, outdoor dining, food and wine, staying safe 😷

Yesterday in our coastal town (busy and full of long weekend visitors) we saw literally hundreds of people but only 1 other masked. When I expressed concern in my Covid cautious FB group I got LOTS of pushback saying I was fear mongering and to move on. What have we become? 😬😢

Flu shot done ✅ Went to the pharmacy - staff all unmasked, but when the pharmacist saw my mask said “would you prefer I wore a mask?” I said “yes please, thank you for asking” and he popped one on with a smile and proceeded to vaccinate us. Very happy with the interaction. 😷

This lies squarely on Govt + media. When half a million people have been lulled into the false sense of security required to blithely attend unmasked super spreader events, vulnerable people can’t be expected to be “personally responsible” for the consequences. #CovidIsNotOver

It’s a bit like the impact of climate change on sea levels. Yes, we know it causes sudden bad storms, tsunamis, weather events etc. that make the news but in the background there is a gradual constant rise in sea levels which is also highly dangerous as the baseline is reset. /2

Right now, an Australian is dying of COVID every 25 minutes. 500+ died last week. 1500+ died this year. More people died of COVID in the first 27 days of January than died of COVID in the whole of 2021. More than died on the roads for the whole of 2022. Many more are sick.

An experiment based on one @1goodtern did yesterday. Two tweets, posted at the same time. Worded almost identically except for one important word. Neither pinned or boosted in anyway. They had the same reach for an hour but now at 8 hours VERY different. Algorithm or luck? 🤔

@NjbBari3 That happened to me once and it sounded like a person - I went out the back door to look and there was a huge wedge tailed eagle walking up my roof with a rabbit it had caught in its claws, basically getting to the peak of the roof to get height for a good take off 😱

@Globalbiosec Extra protein 🤣 a little moth heated at 180 for 20 minutes won’t hurt anyone 👍👍

Just back from the fruit shop and everything is cut up and in the fridge YUM 😋 Mask count on other people at the shops = ZERO. 😷 Took the big bowl of leftover fruit scraps to my hens and we bartered for eggs. I think I did well out of this deal. Thanks, girls 🤣🐓

Thinking of all my current and past Defence force friends and colleagues on ANZAC day. Thank you for your service. ❤️ At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

Blood test this morning ( 2-3 x weekly for me at the moment). Today there are zero masks on the waiting room crowd and all the mask signs are gone. Sigh. Guess I’ll be waiting my turn out in the carpark. 😷 Of course the hand sanitizer bottle is still there 🙄 #CovidIsNotOver

@profesterman @ABCaustralia I'm on an everyday antibotic (Bactrim) for prophylaxis against PJP pneumonia because I am immunosuppressed. There is almost none to be found in Aus, remaining tablets counted out weekly by hospital pharmacy, and this week in ICU I was given kids syrup as there was none. Its dire.

That’s all my observations for now, but may add others later. I’m glad to be home now recovering, and glad to have navigated the system again avoiding COVID 👍 I’ve also restricted replies to this thread to limit trolls. 🙄🤷‍♀️ #CovidIsNotOver 😷

The most impressive response I had was from restaurants. I booked ahead and explained I had health issues and was concerned about Covid and could they assist. Without fail they were kind and accommodating and seated us away from others outdoors, on balconies, by open windows ❤️

@TRyanGregory I bought one too. Learned that my office at work has almost no ventilation but is fine if windows open. Learned that on still days some parts of our house don’t ventilate unless we consciously use fans. Learned which local cafes have good air. No despair just problem solving.

In my Facebook memories from today in 2020. Considering how little we knew back then, it was a pretty accurate prediction. And the warning still applies ☹️

Why the “all or nothing” arguments? Most experts aren’t talking zero Covid a) that horse has already bolted and b) there’s animal vectors. BUT we can decrease morbidity & mortality with simple measures. Not just delayed spread but LESS spread. It’s not rocket science, surely? 🤔

No country or region can or has stopped the Covid spread. Zero covid China and NZ failed. Delayed spread is a good idea, so in particular elderly adults get vaccinated. But to now try and maintain zero covid - or something similar, appears futile. Lots of pain for little gain.
