Our brains assume that the loudest voices, repeated most frequently, represent the majority opinion. In fact, what we are hearing is the "vocal fringe" — a small, outspoken segment of a group or community, which often tends to hold extreme or radical views on any given topic.

We really need to stop listening to the carnival barkers on the fringes (both sides). They do not speak for even a plurality of the country, and if we fail to recognize that fact we end up allowing extraordinarily bad ideas to take root in society.

The intuitive appeal of styles is coming from the right place: a sense that our individuality matters. But individuality is far more substantive than static styles. No shortcuts. Focus on flexible design, mastery (not ranking), relationships, and autonomy.
