@AlfredoAndere
Gosh, what about childcare and child leave policies? What about people who are interested in contributing tangibly to their families and have religious or other constraints that keep them from working in person on Saturdays? I know that not every company is for every person --
@drkeithsiau
Carotenemia still — but metabolic carotenemia with no history of surplus carotene intake can occur be because of a genetic abnormality in the metabolism of carotenoids. might be discoverable in family history!
@AlfredoAndere
-- but this seems to fly in the face of a lot of very good labor research into productivity. Not to mention it just doesn't sit right with anyone who's had to weigh their family and community commitments to those of their job. Diversity is strength in a company.

What I'm so enthusiastic about at
@jura_bio
, and what I'm so grateful that our team has built, is our ability to produce scaled data from the outputs of machine learning models. By integrating ML models into the gene synthesis process, we're able to make much larger libraries for…
Many of the biggest discoveries demonstrate, in part, that new types of data will be needed to make the next big discovery. So my rule of thumb would be that most "scaled data-generation" efforts will ultimately be self-limiting if successful.
@sethbannon
At
@jura_bio
we don't like large language models for our type of synthbio (not the correct sequence statistics) but do better with generative probabilistic modeling. Happy to explain to anyone who's interested!

🔦 The SynBio Spotlight is on Melina Fan, co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of

Getting Addgene off the ground was hard for the first 3 years. No funding, MTAs took months, and scientists didn't want to deposit. So how did they do it? Why?

Authors argue that ML based protein design is currently bottlenecked by lack of relevant data, and that “this problem will not be overcome in the near future”
