I was at the CMAs the night this happened. I’ll never forget when a woman in front of me yelled “Get that Black bi**h off the stage!”
These experiences have happened countless times to numerous Black folks in country music spaces. We’re trying to change that at
@BlackOpry
.
Beyoncé references her 2016 CMAs performance with
@thechicks
in her cover reveal post for
#COWBOYCARTER
.
“This album has been over 5 years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed...and it was very clear that I wasn't.”
Had a Black woman drop me off at the airport this morning. She was playing country music and I got to talk to her about Black Opry. She started crying and saying she had no idea it existed and that she doesn’t feel alone anymore. Y’all!!! 🥲🥹😭
JUST a reminder, this is from streaming, not country radio airplay. This is a small win, but we still have to look to the country music industry and ask what THEY are doing. Cause, if we’re honest, they haven’t changed at all and have no intention to.
“A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey has dethroned “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM” by Beyoncé as the
#1
song on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.
This is the first time in history that two Black artists have topped the Country chart back-to-back.
You know it’s real when your mom calls you to tell you that Country radio (specifically country radio in Nashville) just played the new Beyoncé. Texas Hold ‘Em just played on

I hope every gatekeeper, every A&R rep, every agent, every fan in the country music world that thought Black people don’t belong in this shit, are absolutely sick today.
#COWBOYCARTER
I discussed this on a panel a few weeks ago, but unless we have “non-negotiables” when these sort of things come up, we don’t allow positive and impactful progress in country music. Kudos to everyone over at
@CMT
🖤👏 proud of y’all.
Hey y’all! For anyone wanting to learn more about the harsh realities of Black country music artists/fans, here’s a recent article. It explains how specifically country radio is holding back so many artists from success in country music.
Morning! In prep for Cowboy Carter dropping tonight, I’m thrilled to share that

was featured in this brand new

A Black woman getting a

Let Music Row, Country Radio, and the gatekeepers know that we’re taking this genre back. 🤠🫶🏽🐝
Beyoncé debuts at
#1
on Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart with her new smash hit "TEXAS HOLD 'EM." 🌵
#TEXASHOLDEM
also becomes Beyoncé's HIGHEST debut on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at
#2
, despite only benefiting from 4/7 full tracking days.
Congratulations
@Beyonce

It feels different this time. I think there's a major shift happening/about to happen since Beyoncé dropped. This could really change a lot of these Black Country artists' careers in the best way. What a time!

It’s truly insane how someone who stands up for trans people becomes public enemy for an entire audience of a homophobic, transphobic, and racist bigot in this industry. WHEEW I’m pissed this morning.
Morning everyone! It’s a really special day for music. But first, let’s take it back to November 2, 2016. My friend (in 2nd video) and I got a call to grab tickets to the 50th anniversary of the CMAs. No real explanation, but I was convinced that I needed to go…
Today, I’m honored to be making my first major publication debut with the folks at
@MSNBC
to provide more context of my journey to the CMAs, my love for women in country music, and what I’m hoping for with the release of

Listen to this…it’s not just us bringing it up. The listeners of country music are noticing how racist and bigoted some of these artists are! Also, the song isn’t that good 🤭🥴
When u grow up in a small town, it’s that unspoken rule of “we all have each other’s backs and we look out for each other.” It feels like somewhere along the way, that sense of community and respect has gotten lost. Deep down we are all ready to get back to that. I hope my new
Things been a lil quiet from a majority of the country music industry (mostly white, straight men) since Beyoncé dropped two country singles. Why? Cause for (what I think is) the first time in a long time, country music is centered around Blackness, but especially Black women…
Only about 1% of more than 11,000 songs played on country music radio from 2002 to 2020 were by Black artists, a new study shows.
The
@BlackOpry
is working to change that, having a place where Black people in country music can make their voices heard.
@PriscillaWT
has more.
Jason, you’re always the first to get behind your keyboard and spout off with this stupid shit. In “my small town” you just walk up to the guy and be a man to his face if you want the smoke… not tweet it at him…. Tough guy.
Popcast suggesting a Jellyroll collab on
#COWBOYCARTER
but in the same breath say that Shaboozy and Willie Jones aren’t “good enough” or vocally talented enough to be on the project? Y’all ok over there?
There’s a lot of things I loved about this but also, super disappointed to see Kyle and Keith included in the doc. They’ve spent years discrediting experiences of many of us in this space. The amount of gaslighting from them in this doc really frustrates me. Sorry.
THIS is:
• what country music looks like
• for the culture
• Black excellence
• to the future
• just the beginning

Where’s Mickey’s nominations? Breland (yes, I saw the lil musical event one), Jimmie Allen? Brittney Spencer? What needs to happen? What rooms do we need to be in? This is exhausting man.
I need the Black audience to pull up to CMA Fest, Americanafest, and any other country music gatherings from here on out, but ESPECIALLY this summer. We need the institutions to see that country music appeals to us too!
@Snow_Blacck
Would love for all of y’all to check out
@BlackOpry
! We’re creating safe spaces for all Black country music lovers and musicians. Would love to have you come to one of our shows!
This weekend has been insane. I need a vacation, a massage, a check, and a really long nap. Thanks for all the kind words and to all the folks over at the publications for reaching out 🫶🏽🫶🏽
It’s been nearly a year since I quit my job in retail. This is a great nod to myself and
@_love_holly_
that we made the right choice in believing in ourselves. Hasn’t been easy, but dammit if I’m not proud of what we’ve done in merely 3 years. 🥲🫶🏽🤠
The past few months have been extremely exhausting. Very much a period of “keep your head down and do the work.” How nice to finally be coming up for air in the midst of being named one of

"She has always been country": Critic on Beyoncé’s "Cowboy Carter"

“promiscuous but harmless,”
It's insane how the industry will try to hide how awful some people are just to continue making money, climbing charts, or selling out venues. What a difficult, yet important read from

Finally quit my job in retail after 6.5 years to work full time in the country music industry. Doing this to continue to push more Black/POC/Queer representation in country music

Our community is Nashville (and in other areas) are grateful for this moment in time. Lots of eyes and ears on us and I promise if y’all stick around, it’s gonna be some real great stuff to come. Thanks for all the love recently 🫶🏽🐝🙌🤠
#COWBOYCARTER
If you’re in the music industry, quit acting like you don’t get excited to see/hear other artists. Being a fan is FUN. Have more fun and stop trying to be too cool for this.
🚨WATCH: “ARE THERE TERMS ATTACHED TO WHICH AFRICAN-AMERICAN LEADERS YOU’LL MEET WITH?”
@GovBillLee
has no time for protestors or the black caucus, but plenty to play “JORTS OR FANNY PACKS?” with white guys from the Beacon Center.
Endless COWARDICE & HYPOCRISY. Please share.
Let the record show that including a Black gospel choir to your performance for an award show or on the chorus of your song is not diversifying Country music…
One thing we aren’t gonna do is act like Bobby Bones is the saving grace of getting Beyoncé on country radio…I could say a lot but I’ll stay quiet for now.
I know people are all up in arms on twitter. About what is and what isn’t country. But that Beyoncé song is legit. “Texas Hold Em” is great. We just got it serviced to us this afternoon, but I’ll play it tomorrow. Hey
@Beyonce
, DM me. Come on the show tomorrow. Also, I don’t
Just a reminder that Stagecoach had zero Black artists performing yesterday. The other days do have a few more Black artists represented but there’s so much more room for improvement.
Woke up to hundreds of new folks interested in what we been doing. Grateful and honestly, honored that by Beyoncé announcing a country album, people thought of us. Like…🤯🤯🤯
I been tryin in vain to get the work that we’re doing with
@blackopry
to reach a black audience. The response to this tweet has damn near moved me to tears. Thank y’all for showing up. Please stay with us. There is so much to this space. I promise if you love music you’ll love it
One final thing for today and I’m out. It’s VERY interesting to see so many “critics” who’ve rarely ever covered Black artists in mainstream country, decide to amplify a negative critique written by a Black woman to be THEIR mouthpiece on
#COWBOYCARTER
The data provided by
@data_jada
here is insurmountable. I’m pleading with the audience to stay curious about country music, ESPECIALLY Black women in country music. The more the audience demands/expects inclusivity in genre, the further we can push the needle. Y’all in?!
Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em is getting played on Country format radio but what about the many Black female country artists?
@jadiehm
dug back into the data from our project on back-2-back airplay to show y’all just how underrepresented they were in 2022 on the stations studied…
For anyone seeing the name Linda Martell for the first time today, please take a moment and check out

and the absolutely incredible work she’s poured into
@colormecntry
! The latest episode is a must listen!
To this moment, they have yet to share anything about Bey’s cover art or post from yesterday…wonder why?
Again, this is the norm in the country music industry.
