Last year I tweeted an i-gel pic that 2 paramedics put on blast for poor technique which derailed my confidence.
Cut to theatre today, the consultant anaesthetist hands me an i-gel, in it went and he said “you can tell you’ve done that before. Pro!” 🥺🥺🥺

Me: “we have?”
HALO: “have you not realised you’re missing something?”

Delighted to welcome this newest group of Emergency Call Handlers to
#TeamLAS
🤩
Capping off a busy April for our education teams who train all our new
#ControlRoom
staff ✅
Our 999 call handlers often answer more than 5,500 emergency calls on an average day in London.
“You can stay as long as you like” 🥺
“If you ever want a job here, you’re welcome” 🥺🥺
“We have three vacancies at the moment if you want to join us” 🥺🥺🥺
Theatres placement has been a blast 💉 plus, I have officially intubated a patient!

I always find is so frustrating when HEMS / HART teams post pictures of their latest recruits and there’s no heterogeneity. We need to start asking if those with protected characteristics aren’t: applying (WHY), getting interviewed (WHY), being successful post interview (WHY)
As I’m seeing lots of very male dominant line-ups for forthcoming PHEM conferences & symposiums, I’m just going to leave this here….

Stumbled across this and thought “I need to read this paper and WHAT DO YOU KNOW… “no study exists comparing the capacity of currently available menstrual hygiene products using blood”. Welcome to women’s health in 2023.

Things learned after a shift shadowing a 111 call handler:
☎️ they have a ridiculous amount of patience
☎️ everyone refers to us as “the 9’s”
☎️ so. many. dental. pain. calls.

Turns out it’s a very surreal experience to visit a museum exhibition about something you lived through… and it’s even more surreal when you’re carrying what’s now deemed an historical artefact in your pockets…

One thing my paeds placement has really taught me so far is actually how wide the paramedic scope of practice is. I keep finding myself offering to do assessments, only to be explicitly told that I can’t perform them as “I can’t do them so can’t know if you’re doing it properly”
Nothing can explain the sheer joy at receiving a “you have been successful in your OSCE” email as you walk into the cinema to see a film you bought tickets for to distract yourself from thinking about your OSCE…

*recently attended a varicose vein injury*
Me: and you didn’t hit your leg against anything or notice any pain?
Patient: I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it was my blood, I thought the house was haunted and the blood was coming out of the floorboards 👀👀👀

The
@dsairambulance
helicopter glove is the greatest thing I have ever seen! Note to self, learn how to make this for paeds patients 🚁

When you spend a week stressing that other people have received successful shortlisting emails and you haven’t, then you find this has been in your junk for a week 🎉🎉🎉

Forgot to shock a shockable rhythm throughout an entire scenario despite stating it was a shockable rhythm, constantly mentioning shocks and giving Amiodarone, so just having a looooooong moment with the fishes 😭

First ALS practical day today, and BOY OH BOY that’s a lot of information… however, it does now feel like a more manageable challenge than the Armageddon I had made it out to be in my head 🫠

Hi, as an educator, it would have been nice for your to provide advice on how it’s improperly located and sized. We are told with these mannequins to use a size 3 after stating we would use a size 4 as the mannequin will not tolerate a size 3. Teeth were also on the bite block,
I will never forget being publicly called out after posting my first attempt at a skill by two senior clinicians.
I received loads of support, but 100k people saw them tearing me down for bad practice and it made me feel incompetent.
Be supportive, not condescending 🫶🏻
Thinking about a little interaction I had on here.
I am an NQP, who did a very short diploma course. I am still learning, doing a ridiculous amount of CPD to try and counter the imposter syndrome.
I do not claim to be the worlds best clinician, and am very aware that there is…
Had a nose bleed while swimming and the first aider asked me a huge amount of past medical questions and was I absolutely certain I didn’t hit my face (?!) then informed me that “people don’t just have nosebleeds for no reason” while I sat there like:
Today I found out that the Aussie healthcare system includes ‘Bring Your Dog To Work Day’ for staff wellbeing, and I need to know a) how that got past the IPC team and b) how do we get that in the UK?
Victims don’t speak out because the culture is toxic and they fear they won’t be believed.
Victims don’t speak out because they’ve seen that nothing happens to perpetrators.
Victims don’t speak out because they’ve seen previous victims vilified by colleagues.
Fed up of hearing the term ‘zero-tolerance’, from lived experience in the ambulance service it’s zero-tolerance towards victims
Victims don’t speak out because nothing changes and why would you if you’re going to be treated differently/targeted with late finishes?
Honestly, I think one of the things I miss most about UEA is wandering into The Square each day to be surprised by something new... sometimes it was goats, sometimes it was lightsaber fights, sometimes it was Morris dancing - all the usual culprits for a university campus 😂
Ponies in The Square! 😍 Pumba, Hooligan, and Trixie are here for all the pats and cuddles, thanks to our wonderful

The awkward moment when the person you’re sat next to at dinner is telling you their daughter got rejected from Bournemouth Uni for Paramedic Science, then asks what you do 👀
Even if you don’t think you’ll get in, APPLY! This has been an incredible experience for the past year and I would thoroughly recommend it!! I’ve had the chance to meet so many new and amazing people because of this, and will be eternally grateful ☺️

PLEASE BE AWARE our new ad hits hard, shedding light on the critical need to support the mental health of NHS frontline staff.
We support around 9,000 people every single week, but we could do even more. Please share & donate.
They are there for us, can you be there for them?
A fascinating read about how we manage pain in the pre-hospital world. Definitely worth reflecting on what I’ve experienced in practice and how I want to practice in the future

A great poster by the team
@FHEMS_ARU
showing the gaps in pain Mx in Paramedic practice. Slow full doses of Morphine have always worked so much better in my practice in comparison to “titration” of smaller doses.

A huge thank you to

It’s that bittersweet time of year 💚 The end of two amazing years with my mentor with *literal* blood, sweat and tears, but exam board results are back, everything is passed and it’s officially on to third year 🥺

Our local hospitals now have QR codes which you can scan and someone will email you back telling you the outcomes which is ✨great✨ for learning 👌🏻
