Buying a new truck. Walk in. Tell them what I want. I drive it. I say I want it. Going on an hour and a half at the dealer. Why does it need to be this difficult? This is why DTC will soon take over. Give me a price and let me pay so I can move on w my life.
I’ve had people chuckle when I tell them I’m a pool guy. Our labor rate is $110/hr. Our employees start at $20/hr. We have a waiting list of customers. I’m ok w the stigma. That means fewer people in our field/higher demand. Please continue thinking pool guys/gals are losers 😉
Think inflation is bad now? Wait until the “blue collar” labor of today ages out and retires then the void hits.
We need to solve the skilled trades talent shortage.
1/ This was our first company truck. I was broke. Paid way too much for this wrap and was terrified about how to get accounts. I needed money to stay afloat. I needed a job, so I did what any entrepreneur would do in their wrapped company vehicle. I drove

Me to contractor: Please let us know in advance when you can start job so we can have materials there for you.
Contractor one random morning at 7:30:
Hey we’re here and need materials.
Recently had lunch w a guy who sold his hvac biz for $7M. I asked if he’d be interested in letting me pick his brain. He said he’s excited seeing young guys who grind and want to learn. He paid for lunch. If you’re successful, don’t be like the guy in this video.
My wife does real estate. She shares other houses on Facebook all the time to market. She gets calls fairly frequently from other realtors upset she’s sharing their listing bc it’s not hers. Like bro she’s marketing your property for free what is wrong with you?
Being profitable in the pool industry isn’t hard. You can make $30k/yr simply cleaning 15 pools a week. If you want, you can knock out all 15 in a day. Buy a small truck, a hose, a pole, and a vacuum hose and start knocking on doors.
Wife is a realtor. Friends act so weird when they don’t want to use her. Recently had friends ask her to look at properties for a few months. Eventually stopped responding. Their home is listed w a stranger. Like you can voice your feelings it’s ok man 🤦♂️
Imagine reading on Twitter every day how you can get an sba loan to buy a $1M biz. You buy one and find out the majority of your time is spent managing people. Have you ever managed people? It ain’t for the faint of heart. Congrats. Now you have 100 people to manage.
Never understood friends who want their friends w a SMB to work for free. Recently had a friend put letters on my truck and he charged me materials only. I told him I won’t call him back if he doesn’t charge me. Why would I want my friend to be broke? Makes no sense.
Letting another customer go today. Nice guy, but we get a call back at least once a month. Everything needs to be done asap. We have clients who spend 4X what he does and I hear from them once a year when they wish us merry Christmas. Not gonna cut it.
Does anyone ever sit down on the couch to watch a game, see it’s blacked out, and decide to get up and go to the game? Like great job guys y’all forced my hand on this one I’m gonna drive 2 hours now and go.
@Breck_Maynokur
So I have acid reflux and can’t drink strong coffee. It sucks real bad 😭 I have to drink coffee like this and my my Costa Rican in laws don’t let me make coffee for them anymore 😂
Currently cleaning A LOT of pools by myself. Working long days. Obvi not sustainable BUT for the sake of showing you how simple making money is as a solopreneur. Today I cleaned 17 pools by myself. Started at 7am. Done at 8 pm. Avg price $70/visit. 5 days a week=$309k/yr.
New client: You’re prices are about double this other company I called. Why?
Me: Firstly, we always show up.
Secondly, I believe in paying our employees enough to feed their families. In order to do that, we need to charge what we charge.
New client: I respect that 👍
One of our employees is a great dad. His life revolves around watching his son play soccer. He’s always asking for time off to take him to practice/games. As long as work gets done, the answer will always be yes. I’ll never get in the way of someone being a great parent.
For the life of me, I don’t understand how US citizens fight against having universal health care. We’d rather pay thousands/yr for insurance (which prob won’t cover anything you need) than pay thousands in taxes and have anything covered. Don’t get it.
Went on a double date last night w a couple I hadn’t met. One of my wife’s friends. They were cool. I picked up the tab. They were like oh you didn’t have to do that we’ll get the next one. I say, “Oh are we gonna do this again?” 😂 everyone laughed. GREAT JOKE!!!
Can we normalize not tweeting your revenue amount and trying to make people believe that’s what your net is? Like hey I bootstrapped my pool business and now make $550k/yr. You sound like the bro from the movie “Step Brothers.” I made over $550k last yr bro how much did you make?
Former client reached out to an employee about cleaning their pool personally. Employee called me to let me know he’s not trying to take pools from us. Got some loyal people. Love it.
Potential client just called about weekly service. Spent $60k on new pool. Told me builder is offering service at half our cost. Told him if he’s able to get the same quality service we provide, he’s getting a great deal and should go with them.
I speak Spanish pretty fluently. I always chat w contractors. They always end up asking where I’m from bc white dude speaking Spanish. Guy asks today. Before he could tell me my Spanish was good I asked where he’s from. He says Mexico and I reply “Tu hablas muy bien español.” 😂
We charge $110 for a service call. Client states heater not heating. We tell them to triple check a few things. They send us pics of screen. Appears it is functioning. It will be $110 even if it’s working just fyi. Yeah please come. Def not working. Show up…it’s working. $110
Unpopular opinion(maybe popular): churches mentioning politics of any sort during their service should immediately lose their tax exemption. I know I’m in the Bible Belt but God help me if I can’t go to church and not hear about these Godforsaken politicians. So sick of it.
My son was born about a half hour from now a year ago. I’ll never forget the first time I held him. His eyes were so incredibly bright. Just seemed so intrigued about the world. Didn’t cry. Just kept staring at me. 1 year officially down as a dad.
Giving customers a discount is screwing over your employees. Be a high end company so your employees can be taken care of. We’re the only pool company in town offering 100% health insurance and 3% company match simple ira.
Contractor came to give me price on some work at the house yesterday. Spends 15 minutes explaining why he told his wife to start buying Christmas gifts now bc we’ll prob be at war w China and won’t have anything to buy in December. How do people function w this panic each day?
Took a check to guy who does pavers for us recently. $10k bill for everything. Took him about 3 days all together. Immigrant from Mexico. Lives in a trailer. A very nice one but still a trailer. More than likely a millionaire. Stay humble. You don’t need to keep up w normal.

My 9 year old nephew recently got COVID from an anti vaxxer adult. Siblings can’t go to school for 10 days, their mom can’t have a job & my bro has to work from home. It disrupts so many lives. And the whole caring about kids thing 🤷♂️
1/ Officially closing on the sale of a large portion of my pool route today. This is the beginning of a new biz model for me that will better fit my life. Managing employees and accounts north of 100 were getting to be too much for me. Found out an employee was stealing from me..
1/ Didn’t know this guy nor was I follower. Just never came across his stuff, but was obvi very well loved and respected by so many. Just figured I’d share some of my ups and downs of 2023 bc owning a SMB can get really dark at times and pushing through is so tough.
Am writing w incredibly sad news:
Our friend
@ArtemTepler
is no longer w us.
Will post a link to GoFundMe below to help his partner & young daughter. Hope you will join me in giving what you can.
Pls like, RTs, etc. for distribution, so we can raise as much $ as possible.
Ukraine President says he needs “ammunition, not a ride” when USA offered to evacuate him and the mayor of the capital is a multi millionaire ex boxer out w a machine gun in hand. These politicians are built different. How can you not get behind that? 🇺🇦
Called a guy back this morning looking for pool service. Says he’s shopping prices for his rental property and everyone must be too busy to want work bc no one calls him back 🚩🚩🚩pro tip: if no one will call back don’t tell the one who calls back you’re price shopping.
My wife does real estate. She just created a FB group named “Looking to move to Myrtle Beach/ Welcome to Myrtle Beach.” She controls what is posted in the group. Such a good idea for your industry in the area you live.
Client gave my guys doing pavers 2-18 packs of beer at the job last night. About 20 minutes later, he asked if they were coming tomorrow to finish. If they were, I’d say the likelihood went down a lot when you gave 3 guys 36 beers 😂
Just ran into one of our wealthiest clients. Owns a large drywall distribution company. He asked if we’re busy. Said we’re slammed. Asked if he’s busy. He says yeah the headlines don’t match reality.
@LaurynWarnick
We have one on the way in December. I’m trying to keep us in a cocoon without being a helicopter dad/husband. This is such a nightmare. 🙏 praying!!
11/ The truth many don’t tell you about successful entrepreneurs: they’re just like you. They had no clue what they were doing when they started. They were terrified. They were nervous. If I told you I knew what I’m doing today, I’d be lying. I just figure stuff out every day 🤷♂️
Straight 2% cash back on personal and biz credit cards. All rewards get auto deposited into a brokerage account and invested in index funds (mostly). Roughly $700/month. Annual return of 8% we have $440k in 20 years. Keep your vacation points.
1/ Recently decided to scale my pool cleaning side of the SMB down quite a bit. My goal is to specialize in only very high end accounts. Fewer accounts. Very high margins. Planning on only having one employee and cleaning pools myself one day a week. The goal is to never have…
I’ll never understand people who don’t want to accept refugees fleeing war torn countries. Like bombs are being dropped on a lot of people in the world and we can’t give the tiniest damn about helping them?
If you’re single w no kids, quit your job and start a business. Risk of losing everything only affects one person. If you fail or hate it, go back to a real job. You’ll regret not trying though.
No one ever tells you about what owning a biz is like right before taking time off. The knots in my stomach are never ending. You’d think it would eventually go away, but it’s still terrifying to leave even though I know everything will be fine.
3/ The older ones were by far the coolest. Always encouraging. The most common piece of advice I got was to not give up. No matter what. Don’t give up. To be in a different spot 7 years later where I can give advice, I’d tell someone the same. It’s so easy to quit.
Officially listed our pool maintenance company for sale today!! Who wants to move to Myrtle and make a healthy living fixing pools??? If any of our customers follow me on Twitter this account has been hacked 🤷♂️🤫
At subway. Employee walks in. Guy who appears to be owner lays into her in front of everyone. Apparently she’s late. He said this will never happen again. She gave him the deuces and left 😂
12.28.2021. Welcome to the world little man. So excited to be your dad. Also, so proud to partner w this gal. I have a new appreciation for how tough she is after this week.
A lot can be said about being an operator. Don’t get me wrong it’s great. I love it, but it can be a hell of a lonely place at times. It’s an island. No one else knows what’s going on inside your head. No one else feels what you feel. The anxiety. The worry. It can get tough.
USA currently has a severe labor shortage. Ukraine and other countries have millions of refugees needing to be homed. How does it not make sense to help them out and they help us out at the same time by making up for the labor shortage?
6/ band mates during country music fest (don’t meet your heroes btw). Gave a ride one night to a guy who owns the largest pool company in Charlotte. His advice was to keep my wife close. You’ll cry like a baby some nights and want to quit. You’ll need her.
Ran in to an old friend the other day. Told him we were up to 3 employees. He told me I should really be proud we’re putting food on the table for 3 families. Easy to overlook stuff like that when we’re in the weeds. No matter the size of your biz, be proud of what you’ve built.
3/ Having my partner out-earn me is probably the proudest I’ve been of either of us in our professional careers. Don’t ever let anyone tell you something isn’t possible in the USA. If you put in the work, the opportunities are endless.
When I first started my pool company, my goal was to have 15 accounts so I could work full time in the business. This week we’ve obtained 4 new clients. Still surreal to see the game plan come to fruition.
People try to convince me all the time we should do commercial properties. The hotels and condos are where the money is at. This. This is why we do not do anything commercial. I was a C- math student in high school but my calculator tells me $150/21=$7. Not $70. $7.
Going to buy my first
@MegaMillionsUS
ticket this bc it’s $1B. If this Twitter account no longer exists next week, it’s bc I don’t fix pools anymore and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
@moseskagan
100%. I always find it funny to look at how my grandmother lived on the farm. We always joked at how stingy she was. As an adult I’m like yeah she was a millionaire and changed my family tree from having no shoes as a kid to us buying our kids shoes that have lights in them.
4/ Our very first client, whom we’ve had since day one, came from a Tuesday night at 2am. Picked up this lady’s son. He said their pool was green. Hired me the next week. Been there ever since.
To the people who in places like buffalo where you have potential to get 6’ of snow in one storm: why make life choices such as these? We have homes in other parts of the world.
Monday we close on our first piece of real estate outside of our home. Going to have a shop to work out of and 2 units to rent. It’s house hacking, but for our business. My wife and I now own 3 businesses. Surreal feeling. Not bad for a pool boy and an immigrant selling houses.
What do you all do on a bad SMB ownership day when the day is over? It’s not all pixies and ferry dust. Today was one of those days. Personally, can’t wait to see my kid. By far my fav thing to do when I have a bad day. What’s your go to?
More and more convinced each day electric trucks will be a game changer for svc biz. Once every 2 months we pay an employee to sit for about an hour while they wait on an oil change. Really dislike oil changes.
If you’re trolling me and don’t have a real name/photo, it’s an immediate block. Troll all day long as a real person. If you’re anon and your main purpose is trolling and bringing negativity, I pray you get happier in life.
Some days I’m dead set on growing an empire of a pool svc biz. Others days I’m just gonna weed out everyone but my top 40 or so accounts and go back to being on my own. Usually just wake up and get over it though.
Good friend of mine owns an electrician company. He gave me a price to run electric to our hot tub last year at $75/hr. I told him he’s way too cheap. Spoke w him today and he said he’s up to $125/hr now and life is good. Thanked me for the tip. No better feeling!!
I always find it amazing people are able to get groups of 20 or so together for a STR on vacation. I’d struggle to find 5 people I want to spend a week with.
3/ Typically once they hopped in and asked why I was in a pool truck, I’d explain I just started a SMB. Majority of people were really cool after that and respected the hustle. I actually got a lot of really great advice in those rides. Ran in to a lot of other SMB owners.
To everyone who sent congrats yesterday for my bride obtaining her citizenship, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This community is overflowing w some of the most genuine people I’ve met.
The best SMB operators are the ones who can speak to everyone they interact with as if nothing has gone wrong that day. If you can master that, you’re in good company. Let’s be real , no one wants to do biz w someone whining about their day either.
So you want to own a biz? My whole family is sick. Was planning on working half day. Employee just calls in sick. Guess who isn’t working a half day now? Also, he just got back from a 2 week vacation so that makes it even better. Don’t doubt that he’s sick timing just sucks.
5/ Picked up hundreds of passengers over those couple years at all hours of the night. All kinds of crazy stories. I could’ve easily said driving Uber is below me. I’m an entrepreneur. Not a cab driver. I actually picked up many accounts driving. Gave a ride to zac brown band’s..
I’d like to apply for job as postmaster general. I can save our country loads of cash with 2 ideas:
1. No basic mail delivery Saturday. If you want it delivered by Saturday, pay extra.
2. Community mailbox requirement for subdivisions.
You’re welcome taxpayers. Seems so simple.
