Karla is a Puerto Rican artist who works on Films (MCU, ILM,HBO), Games, TV, Covers, Fine art, etc. Passionate advocate for better artist industries+ rights ✌️
Hi
#VisibleWomen
, I'm Karla Ortiz! I've worked for ILM (Rogue One, WoW, Jurassic World, Lucy), Universal Studios, and Marvel (Black Panther, Thor 3, Infinity wars) & known for Doctor Strange's design! I'm also a fine artist who loves oils! Nice to meet you all! :D

1/ Hey reporters. Please PLEASE when reporting on Sora at least ask this 1 (one) specific question.
“Can we see the data Sora was trained on?”
Open Ai has been dodging accountability by explicitly hiding their training data.
This is unacceptable, the public needs to know.
Twitter, hell site where even your mundane color palette can be dragged 😂 😭
Tho fun oil tip, mixing a tiny hint of lemon yellow onto your whites (for me it’s titanium), can create very intense +vibrant warm whites, especially more so if you lay it on thick, impasto style! :)
She got scammed, is demanding her money back and won’t be using that AI image. Her stance is still the same. But I guess you gotta skip over those details in order to paint a “HyPoCrEsY” picture for those likes 🤷🏻♀️
Every time a student brags to me that they didn’t use references, I have to burst their bubble & tell them that IT SHOWS. If you’re starting out, not using refs can seriously impede your growth as it’s a pivotal learning tool. Use refs folks! We all do in some way or another!
A legend has left us today.
His vision changed our culture, our collective perception of what is possible, and inspired so many of us today.
With a heavy and saddened heart, I say, R.I.P Syd Mead.
Friendly reminder that if you ever get an email like this, it’s a con artist trying to steal your money.
I wasn’t too kind ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m nice & polite except to con artists like these doing the same tired con which specifically targets artists.
Here’s how this con works:
When folks decide to paint over other artist’s work, and then brag about how better their version is, 100% of the time their version is shittier technically. Plz don’t do this. Not only do you show folks you don’t know what you’re talking about, you also show you’re an ass.
Every time I hear art twitter discussing the idea of "big accounts" in our particular artistic industries, I always just think of this comic by
@ProPenComics
1/ Good morning.
Drawing and painting for 8+ hours a day can do irreparable damage to your body, even if you are young. Instead may I offer the following helpful advice that works and is healthier for you?
Deliberate and dedicated study of 3-5 hrs > 8+ hours of non stop paint.
If someone ever says this to you they either want to:
A. Take advantage of your passion.
B. Overwork you.
C. Pay you less
Or are:
D. Misguided
E. Trying to excuse their own horrible work life balance.
Yes, passion is important, but so is getting paid a good wage+ rest!!!
Cruel critiques are unnecessary. IMO they’re often a reflection of the poor emotional state of the person doing the critiquing. Be kind and honest. if someone needs a lot of work, then give them the tools to improve. There is no need for cruelty.
I am THRILLED to announce that the
#ConceptArtAssociation

I’m Karla Ortiz, a Puerto Rican concept artist! Currently at Marvel Studios (I designed Dr. Strange) but also worked at HBO, Universal Studios, ILM. I’m also an illustrator (Tor books, Orbit, MTG ) and lastly a fine artist (oils n pencils!) Nice to meet ya!
Fellow artists, I know the current exploitative AI media is grim and an egregious issue but there are so many wonderful people working hard to ensure that what we’re currently experiencing isn’t the norm. So please, stay hopeful, stay informed and stay painting! We got this 💖
Me: spends 20+ years laboriously learning my craft.
A gallery at Art Basel: BaNaNa-N-dUcT-tApE, MoNeY mE, NoW. *faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart*
Man, this sucks lol
Huh. Today I learned “if you aren’t getting jobs or a following in an industry where skill is a big factor, please check in and verify if you do indeed have said skill. If not, practice and time will help immensely. :) “ is apparently a controversial statement on this site. 🙃
Remember the GenAI game plan. To go fast, spin tales of progress, and to quickly normalize the exploitation of artists and people, before the laws and regulations catch up.
Don’t fall for it. Keep your eyes on the road ahead. Their business is a house of cards. Don’t forget it!
For those wondering who the Third Party
@Dropbox
just gave everyone’s data automatically to, it’s Open AI.
Considering all the lawsuits Open AI has concerning illicit use of ill-gotten data, privacy breaches and data leaks this arrangement inspires 0 confidence.Bad move Dropbox.
It’s disgusting that a tech that is uniquely fueled by the theft of hundreds of thousands of artists, is so invasive and hell bent in occupying all of our spaces, that it’s stripping away people’s desire to live. Every single country needs to protect prople from this, NOW.
A patrol in a suicide spot took into custody a college student at an art college and another art college graduate.
They both spoke of their dreams being destroyed by the introduction of genAI into their college classes.
Execs continue to show us their intentions with the generative AI. it’s primary function? A model that is trained on us (without consent) meant to replace us.
This is one of the many reasons why unfettered generative AI is such an existential issue for all industries.
Dreamworks co-founder Jeff Katzenberg says AI will cut cost of animation movies by 90% within the next three years:
“In the good old days, you might need 500 artists and years to make a world-class animated movie. I don’t think it will take 10% of that three years from now.”
So an artist said online that “skill is important” in an assertive tone, coincidentally on the same day as a really cool hashtag on up and coming artist trying to get more followers is happening, and it made you mad/confused. Behold yet another long ass thread:
Art is labor.
Don’t let anyone demean that simply because it is enjoyable (tho occasionally it is not) or try to say that your labor is not worth mad 💰.
Our collective & individual work, makes companies millions and billions in profit. Don’t forget that.
1/ After following the AI conversation for so long there is one argument that is made over and over, by well meaning and not so well meaning folk.
“AI is inspired by artists the same way humans are”.
As a professional artist I can safely say that's nonsense. Lets discuss 🧵
Bravo to the Concept Art Association for advocacy of artists! If you are an artist upset with unethical AI practices, consider sending the Concept Art Association your portfolio, commissions, prices and times! They'll be compiling the info and sharing it with our community!

but hi. I’m Karla Ortiz, a Puerto Rican concept artist, fine artist & illustrator working for films, games, book covers, etc. My current dream is to visit Japan, do more oil paintings and take more time off! ✌️
Finally got some time to properly join this

Folks if I may ask for a tiny favor, please sign+share this! If AI companies CEOs get to chat with the President, so should those who are exploited and impacted by the same AI companies! Lets bring a pro-arts+creative coalition to the White House! 🙌🙌🙌

Professional artist here (Marvel,HBO, etc)!! Please support the kid! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on the art world and much later on, on how to develop this skill! For now, kid just has to continue having fun!! :D its a joy to watch!
1/ Deeply embarrassing response to artists protesting for their rights from
@ArtStationHQ
.
This language is so contradictory. No artists got to decide or choose how THEIR work was used, when AI companies scraped their work from sites like Art Station (cont.)
Today in wtf news, a for profit generator that provides you with “Prompts” to use for AI. These prompts, of course, include +1500 artists full names. Monetizing our full names, without our knowledge or compensation. Tell me again how this is harmless?

Is AI art “art” is the most boring discussion. IMO the better discussions are: How can we ensure this tech isn’t exploitative, that creative labor is protected+compensated and that the public has the tools to know if something is AI. What policies will we need to do all this?
He
@Kickstarter
so you’re just gonna let a AI project that’s main premise is generating (potentially non consensual) porn and main sales pitch is that folks can steal from Greg Rutkowski? Or are you gonna do something to protect creators and the public?

.
I'm your friendly yet rowdy neighborhood Boricua artist, Karla Ortiz.
I paint in oils+digital. I work in movies, TV, video games, card games, book covers, magazines and do gallery work. I also like to teach folks and talk a lot about an artist's life. <3
Hello. This is a study of
@BernieSanders

1/ Honoring the passing of the legendary
#SydMead
with some of his many many many illustrious paintings.
While we say goodbye to a legend his work will still be with us, shaping our culture and our lives.
1/ As I learned more about how the deeply exploitative AI media models practices I realized there was no legal precedent to set this right. Let’s change that.
Read more about our class action lawsuit, including how to contact the firm here:
1/5 Bold faced lie. “We didn’t replace any artists while using the artist replacement tool” they basically said. Illustrators lost jobs because the studio decided to give that role to 1(one) ai user who then used the tool that is fueled by the work of those artists they replaced.
What a betrayal to all the incredible artists at Marvel Studios. If you’re in Hollywood and you still don’t know how AI works, learn. Learn how it exploits all of your peers, and that is not copyrightable work.
Its not over btw, there is too much to do. But this is egregious.
Honestly deeply disgusted that all these wonderful spaces on the internet, where people share their creativity, their passion and their knowledge, is being taken, repackaged and sold by tech bros without anyone’s consent, to power models that flood the internet with mimicked slop
Reddit selling user content to third party AI is such an insane rights violation. They're willfully choosing to profit from people's stories, writing, ideas, confessions, art, photos, and even nudes by selling them for use in an infinite remix machine with ZERO consent.
Seeing gAI advocates & investors change talking points over time as they lack impact has been fascinating!
It went from “its fair use” (VERY unlikely) to “it gets inspired like people” (it doesn’t) to the honest “if we have to pay for the works we stole we wont make money :(“.
“Andreessen Horowitz is warning that billions of dollars in AI investments could be worth a lot less if companies developing the technology are forced to pay for the copyrighted data that makes it work.”
This is NOT from the

Continuing on my mission of bringing more of my art on twitter, here’s an oldie. This one was for

Outrageous! Meta released a gAI model trained on 1.1 billion images from FB and IG. Copyrighted works, our pictures and our loved ones pictures all used to train this model.
Tech companies are claiming ownership of things they do not own! This MUST stop!
Seeing companies stuck in PR hell because their vendors used stock imagery that was genAI even tho it wasn’t listed as such, makes me think that smart companies will need to rely on trusted artists/photographers as opposed to third party vendors who use unreliable stock images 🤷🏻♀️

Ps. Thanks to Jack Dudman for final cape details!
Last week
@ntvnewszero
released a shameful segment that exploited my work by holding a public "competition" with online trolls, misinformed viewers and dismissed my accurate issues on generative AI. Here's my statement on this unfortunate segment:
@BryanLlenas
With COVID 19 still at large, pushing folks to a confined space for more than 24 hours seems like straight up bioterrorism from the state. Biological warfare is considered a war crime.
0 mayors and governors can claim to care one bit about COVID19 if they allow this to happen.

is here! Hi, I’m Karla, a Puerto Rican concept artist who has worked on movies for Marvel (Dr.Strange, Black Panther, etc), ILM (Rogue one, WoW, Jurassic World), Universal Studios, HBO & also MTG, Orbit, Tor books etc. I also do lots of oil paintings on the side! :)
My new normal is being functional about 4 days a week. About 2 days a week I’m aloof. 1 day a week without fail, I am unable to focus at all, immensely overwhelmed, sad/angry.
I really miss being a fully functioning artistic human, but tbh, super glad I’m functional at all.
Back when I was 23-24, I did this oil study from a cast of the Nike of Samothrace at an atelier. It took a month and a half, 5 days a week, 3 hours every morning. It was slow and steady work. But rendering it to this stage taught me what it took to take my images to a final!
I’ve been in NDA lands for quite a while now. I’m looking forward to a month or so when I’m able to work on my traditionals on the side once again. I dream of a winter of oils and pencils!
Until then, here’s a 2016 drawing. “The Death I Bring”. :)
A fun thing about generative AI discourse is when ai advocates claim aggrieved artists don’t know how the tech works. But when you ask ai advocates how it works, some anthropomorphized nonsense like “It LEaRnS aNd Is InSpIrEd JuSt LiKe YoU” always creeps up. It’s embarrassing.
1/ Begging studios to understand that you need to ensure your third party marketers don’t use Generative AI(GAI) in any way. People are (rightfully) pissed over what would otherwise been an awesome poster, because the GAI background.
And yes its 💯 GAI:
The harms of generative ai are not a hypothetical in a future scenario. They are not some terminator sci fi nonsense scenario. The real harms are happening NOW. First coders, artists, writers, performers, musicians, soon everyone else.
The time for solidarity and action is NOW!
The studio’s A.I. proposal to SAG-AFTRA included scanning a background actor’s likeness for one day’s worth of pay and using their likeness forever in any form without any pay or consent.

Holy shit, how does instagram just keep getting worse? I can’t even see the art/pictures of folks i follow anymore. Just frustrating UX and non stop reels. Like bruh if I want to get a tik tok like experience, I’ll just use tik tok? 😩
Now THIS is how a company should respond! Quick, affirmative,and standing by the artists who have collaborated to make their products a success!
Excited the company also shares the sentiment of their incredible art teams and the artists they collaborate with! Good news overall!
