Math Twitter!!! I’m trying to explain to
@bielleogy
that this is actually like the ultimate mathematician way of thinking. Like this kid is a mathematician in the making. Who agrees?
At the gym, guy asks about my tattoos and what I do. I tell him I’m a mathematician. He proceeds to tell me that math is what the devil uses and that I need to read the Bible. Sir this is an LA fitness.
A student came to my office today and gave me kind of a funny look, and that is when I, a dynamical systems expert, realized I had the wikipedia page for "dynamical systems" open on my monitor. So that's where we're at right now.
Holy moly, this resonated with people! While I have your attention, there are many orgs working to improve inclusivity and equity in the field of math. One is

My calculus students asked me about Collatz today so I went on a bit of a tangent to tell them about it. They asked me if I’m going to prove it, and when I told them no, they told me they believe in me 😭
Am I being overly sensitive? There are 3 assistant profs in my dept, two men and myself. Today I noticed that the signs on their doors call them “professors of mathematics” and mine says “assistant Professor.” What gives?
Academics with PhDs, do you use the Dr. title in professional settings only, or everywhere? Someone (not an academic or a phd) told me that academics only use the Dr for work, and I’m a bit salty about it.

WAIT I just put 2 and 2 together: this was the soup your mom made for the birthday dinner I was at??? I can not believe I was in the presence of the pre-

pdflatex -> bibtex -> pdflatex -> pdflatex
It's 2022, is there no better way? (I'm seriously asking, is there a way to get around doing this every time?)
PSA: Apparently you don't need the curly brackets for \frac if your numerator and denominator are only 1 character each?? Like \frac12 is the same as \frac{1}{2}!! Did everyone else already know this and I'm just finding out?

I accidentally left off the backslash when I typed up my worksheet today, so the worksheet printed mathbb{q} and somehow that turned into a rumor that the math department is holding a barbecue. Sorry ,that's my fault.
The portal through which students access software such as MATLAB here at CSUSM is called “CougarApps” so I just searched “cougar apps” in google in front of my whole class, and the results were not what I was expecting 😖
Yesterday I received a birthday card from my parents. My dad is a

, and doesn’t really have use of his hands, but he still managed to write a note in my card. I SOBBED. This is the first time I’ve seen him write since his accident. (It says “badass mathematician”)
I just found out that linear algebra is not a prereq for the DEs course I am teaching. We have started linear systems and eigenvectors/values are quite important!!
#mathtwitter
in your DEs classes with no LA prereq, how do you teach this stuff without going down a LA rabbit hole?
Discussion with my calc class got me wondering....what's your personal take on the question is f(x)=1/x continuous? Like it's got an asymptote so it FEELS discontinuous but it is continuous on its domain so....
@howe
I definitely don’t think it was intentional. So the plan is to bring it up gently. But a reminder than even unintended, implicit bias still hurts.
I'm noticing a pattern. Students come to me asking if I can move the date of my exam, because another class they're taking (often taught by a white, male, older professor) also has an exam that day. I often ask if they've talked to this other professor about the issue...(1/3))
I told my students that the square at the end of proofs is the mathematical version of a mic drop, and now one of my students has told me she (might if she has time) crochet me a mic so I can drop it at the end of proofs.
Met a cute 11 year old who was super into math today!! He was like “I wish I could talk about math with you allllll the time.” So I gave him my email address. “YOU MEAN I CAN EMAIL YOU MATH QUESTIONS WHENEVER I WANT???”

Today I ran into a student who took a class with me last semester. I asked him how is spring semester was going and what classes he was taking. He said he was taking DEs and a theoretical proof based class, but he liked DEs more because he prefers “actual math” to theory 😱
Ok I am probably going to regret this. But I was telling my intro proofs class about the controversy of the natural numbers and I realized I don’t know how many people believe which side. So let’s take a poll! What do you think?
How do y’all encourage students to work together on class worksheets? Do you make them form groups? My students are SO QUIET and nervous to talk to their neighbors! I don’t want to force anyone to do anything they’re uncomfortable with…
I just wrote an email to some coauthors I have in Ukraine, checking in on them during this precarious time. For those of you who think that math is above politics, remember that there are human beings behind the math. 🇺🇦 Things to think of in advance of

...and they say no. Why am I the first one approached for this? Why is the expectation that I'll be the one to move my exam, and not the other professor? (Note: I am of course willing to work with my students about this, but I'm frustrated that the default assumption... (2/3)
Gender bias in mathematics? Shocking.
This article takes a close look at how a tiny bit of gender bias has long term ramifications, and mentions academic mathematics specifically. Let’s do better, folks.
Intro proof was pretty bird themed today. My students decided our class mascot is a pigeon wearing a bishop hat (because of pigeonhole principle and chessboard problems) and please look what they made for me and

I am delighted to announce that I will be an assistant professor of math at

starting in the fall! Looking forward to being back in

and getting to know all the students and faculty.

Has this been done? I feel like I’ve seen it before but couldn’t find it. If it has been done already, please let me know so I can give them proper credit.

hits different this year. Anti-trans legislation is sweeping the country. A reminder to my fellow cis people to speak up on behalf of our trans friends and family. 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
Happy Pride Month! 🌈 reminder as we head into this wonderful month that the commercial visibility of Pride over the past few years has often excluded the voices of those most marginalized. 💗

It is with excitement - and some nervousness - that I announce that I have been nominated as a candidate for member-at-large of the Executive Committee of the AWM! I am passionate about making our math orgs inclusive and welcoming to all, and I am committed to working (1/n)

Ok tweepz settle an argument for us. Let’s say there are two towns A and B that are across the water from each other but there is no bridge so to get from A to B you have to go all the fuck the way around the bay. Would you saw A and B are close?
