I've been digging into claims that @CDCgov recently lowered its bar for children's speech development. CDC did change milestones. Today, it's out of line with @ASHAWeb & NY State. Importantly, these other orgs haven't changed any guidance during the pandemic. Let's unpack.

This is HUGE: Tennessee becomes first state to announce higher reading outcomes than pre-pandemic, with higher ELA proficiency than 2019. "The highest proficiency the state has seen in the last five years" in BOTH elem & HS. #Reading360 pays off!

Baltimore Archdiocese moving schools to mask-optional next week. Continuing a trend in which Catholic schools are more reasonable and pro-child at every turn of the pandemic.

I’m one of the Majority of US Parents of Kids Under 11 who’s not yet ready to vaccinate my healthy 9YO. I was going to get my daughter theater tickets for her January birthday. Sadly, that’s out. And we won’t be eating out in NYC.

No organization has been more responsible for the shameful treatment of children during the pandemic than @AmerAcadPeds . When we are deciding who gets a pass on their pandemic misses and who deserves extremely hard questions, AAP needs to go firmly in the latter camp.

Today, AAP updated interim pandemic guidance on schools, urging prioritization of in-person learning and adherence to COVID safety measures like vaccines and universal masking. Research shows virus transmission in schools is low, especially when masking policies are enacted. 1/3

The shift in attitudes around COVID is so tangible in the real world. Yet here in Twitter, extreme voices call for everything from pre-emotive school closures to taping masks to children’s faces to medical grade masks for toddlers. The disconnect has never felt more striking.

You really have to listen to this. To hear a mayor speak with such clarity about the costs to vulnerable children is beyond-refreshing. Well done, @NYCMayor .

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City insisted schools would remain open despite surging Omicron cases in the city. He said remote learning has been too damaging, especially to children in low-income neighborhoods and homeless students.

California delays release of its reading and math outcomes, in a “significant departure” from its usual timing. 👉 Totally anti-child. I wish I was shocked. Article drives home point about the November election as a potential factor in decision.

@rweingarten @kbelokopitsky DeVos was useless. But how is this a contrast with DeSantis? He opened schools much more broadly than NYC, famously with success (note this USA Today reporting from September, 2020). I’m not a DeSantis fan, but the facts are the facts.

Brown study: 'children born during the pandemic have significantly reduced verbal, motor, and overall cognitive performance compared to children born pre-pandemic.' Masks cited as a probable culprit. So far, only reported in a British publication.

Perhaps the @CDCgov linked wrong study here. Still, it raises questions. About the reporting: 👉 How did this make it through @nytimes fact-checking? 🤦🏼‍♀️ 👉 Does Apoorva not look into actual studies at stake in her reporting? She just sees a line on a CDC summary and runs w/ it?
