Multnomah County alone - Oregon’s largest county with 818,000 people - has 30 ballot drop boxes open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Harris County, Texas - population 4.7 million - has 1.
This is what voter suppression looks like.
We’re seeing some wraparound action, but overall the line to drop of absentee ballots in Harris County is moving quickly. Thanks to Gov. Abbott’s proclamation this is now the only drop-off site in the county of more than 4.7 million. I’m live on
@MSNBC
w/ the latest all day.
After last week's brawls in our streets, tonight’s tragedy should've been anticipated & prevented.
While the right has tried to portray our city as dangerous, it was out of town vigilantes who sought to sow violence. Trucks plowed through intersections, firing mace & paintballs.
I'm proud to join my
@multco
colleagues in calling on the City of Portland to fight the expansion of the Zenith oil terminal. The terminal poses a grave risk to our community & will further exacerbate our climate crisis.
So, I have COVID. I'm pretty sick - I’d equate my symptoms to the flu - and am quarantining at home. The timing is... not ideal. But due to the miracle/horrors of technology, I'll be accessible and keeping in touch once the worst is passed! 😉
Today
@multco
set our community on the path to a future free from dirty & noisy gas-powered leaf blowers. Our resolution starts the process of setting a timeline for the phaseout of these leaf blowers county-wide.
A 🧵on why these devices are so harmful...
Today Multnomah County filed suit against several of the largest fossil fuel and coal-producing corporations, seeking to hold them accountable for the damages arising from the 2021 Pacific Northwest Heat Dome.
I am horrified to learn of the derogative & ignorant comments made by
@clackamascounty
Commissioner Mark Shull. We can't conflate "opinion" w/ignorance, "straight talk" w/stupidity. His comments are wrong & he needs to resign.
Below is a statement from the full
@multco
board.
This is a great tool by the New York Times that shows the greatest threat posed by the climate crisis for every county in the US. The wildfires, floods, and hurricanes we've seen this year are just a taste of our future if we don't
#ActOnClimate
now.
Trump won't use this event to bring us together. He’ll use this tragedy to try to further scare & divide us.
Don't take the bait. This is our opportunity to say that violence - & especially violence by police against Black people - has no place in the community we seek to build.
Shout out to the best damn elections team in the country! Multnomah County's elections division provides timely, reliable results. Our employees have processed over 158k ballots this election, and are counting more as we speak! 🙏🏾🇺🇸🗳️
Right wing extremists have been emboldened by Trump who has condoned & encouraged violence, demonized our city & enabled the dangerous “parade” we saw tonight.
Now someone is dead. No matter what the circumstances, this is an escalation that may lead to more violence and chaos.
So excited to welcome
@SusheelaJayapal
to
@multco
! We are thrilled to have you join our all-women, majority women of color board. I look forward to your insights, ideas, and scrutiny. Our community deserves thoughtful, dedicated public servants, and you are just that! ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼
While the media has often portrayed Portland as a city in chaos, voters have doubled down on investing in equity & inclusion over the last 2 elections. We've committed to making Portland a great place for everyone.
My piece with

We're small-d democrats. We believe in the power of the people! 🇺🇸
After 54 deaths on our roadways last year, we must invest in

I'm proud to support SB 395 in the

Youthpass will empower all of our region’s young people to get to school, work and recreational activities safely, all while building a new generation of lifelong transit users. I’ve been proud to work w/youth leaders on this important effort
I need to look my kids in the eyes & tell them I did everything I could to address the climate crisis before it’s too late. Oregon can show tremendous leadership by adopting market-wide carbon pricing.
Proud to rally & fight for
#ClimateAction
(and our future!) in Salem today!
This afternoon I testified before Portland City Council in support of congestion pricing. And as I look at the evening commute it's clear that we need new tools to address our region's gridlock.
Celebrating the new frequent service on 122nd Ave in east Portland! In the two years line 73 has been in operation, it's become a lifeline for many in the community. It now provides 25,000 trips a week!
As the
@nytimes
puts it - "the gas leaf blower is by all measures, and without dispute, harmful."
That's why I've partnered with Commissioner
@CommRubio
to phase out the use of these dirty, noisy, and polluting devices in
@multco

Any Rose Quarter project must include community input, focus on equity, benefit all transportation modes & adhere to our climate goals.
Proud to have joined
@ChloeEudalyPDX

@LynnPetersonOR
in fighting for a recalibrated, inclusive, community-led process.
It's well past time that we codify anti-discrimination protections for our LGBTQ communities as the law of the land. I'm grateful to
@SenJeffMerkley
for his tireless efforts to pass the
#EqualityAct

At a time when transit ridership is declining nearly everywhere, Seattle has seen a 9% increase in bus ridership over the last 9 yrs! The key: prioritizing transit w/dedicated lanes & frequent service
High-capacity modes moving swiftly = happy riders 🚌🚎
My new state representative, Andrea Valderrama, has worked hard to improve the lives of those living in east Portland.
Her knowledge of our city, our schools, & our community, as well as her history of advocacy, will help immensely in her role serving HD 47.

Daunte Wright should be alive today. His death is another tragic illustration of why we need to replace our broken law enforcement system with a new vision of public safety that is rooted in community trust & oversight. My heart breaks for Daunte's loved ones.

Congratulations to Oregon's newest senator, Akasha Lawrence-Spence.

Leaf blowers harm our public health thru air & noise pollution. That's why today I testified before Portland City Council in support of
@CommishFish
's proposed phase-out of gas-powered leaf blowers. I'm glad to partner w/the City as we at
@multco
consider how we can act as well.
Today
@multco
updated our green building policy to ban the use of fossil fuels in new projects. The climate crisis requires us to move aggressively to decarbonize every economic sector, and the county will play a role by using our market power to divest from fossil fuel systems
Congratulations to Representative-Elect

"There’s a broad consensus the state’s grocery supply is adequate. Shelves may be barren each evening, but they’re usually restocked every morning."
Thanks to those working to keep our grocery stores stocked & staffed. We appreciate your work during these challenging times. 🙏🏾
Yesterday I sent a letter to President
@JoeBiden
with 33 other officials calling upon the new administration to use its executive powers to immediately end the Trump Administration’s war on immigrant & refugee communities.
Grateful to
@wweek
for highlighting some of the reasons why we love our city. One major reason: our
@MultCoLib

Today I was so proud to attend the groundbreaking of the Outer Powell Transportation Safety Project. My district of SE Portland contains the vast majority of high crash corridors in our city. This $100 million investment in East PDX will save lives & improve our community for all
This is great news! Diesel pollution disproportionately impacts low income & communities of color. Moving to electric buses will reduce diesel pollution, shrink our region's carbon footprint & set us up for the transportation system of the 21st century.
Congratulations Councilor Jones! Your voice on the Gresham City Council will be a wonderful contribution, and I could not be more excited to serve our communities alongside you. 🤜🏽🤛🏿
Gresham City Council appoints Vincent Jones as the FIRST Black Gresham City Councilor. History has been made. Vincent is involved with Beyond Black CDC and is an active member of the Gresham community. Congrats Vincent! The Black community is now represented in City Council 👏🏽✊🏾
Congestion pricing is a key tool in our effort to combat climate change. It can nudge drivers to skip, defer or pool trips. It can reduce traffic & eliminate the need to expand roadways. It can make transit a more attractive option.
Receiving a project update from
@OregonDOT
.
This is a strong reminder that COVID is not over. We need to be cautious to protect those with underlying health conditions & wear masks indoors. Top of mind: protecting our teachers & students, who are trying to enjoy the final month of school & all that goes with it. 😷
Congrats to
@TriMet
for getting its first of many electric buses in operation! Changes like this one are necessary for our region to meet its climate goals, and also improve our air, water, and health! 🚌
Kicking off
@trimet
’s frequent service expansion! These lines are a huge deal for riders, providing more reliability, convenience & options. Knowing that the next bus is just minutes away relieves stress & creates flexibility when considering a job & improves our quality of life.
Turning urgency into action, Chair

Other states need to follow Oregon and implement vote by mail as well.
The most difficult thing about voting should be educating yourself on the issues & candidates, not casting your ballot. Say goodbye to long lines & hello to voting at home, at a cafe, at a bar 📨 🗳️ 🇺🇸 ✅ 👏🏾
Since Oregon became the 1st state to adopt automatic voter registration in 2015, 16 other states and D.C. have done the same. Same-day registration has seen similar success via

Part of this incident occurred in front of my house & was terrifying. Sunday Parkways is a family event that normalizes the sharing of our roads. This behavior is dangerous & reprehensible, and the brandishing of a gun horrific.
Grateful to those who worked to deescalate this.
In a shocking (yet totally predictable) display of rage, entitlement, and petro-masculinity, a man driving a truck showed off his gun to calm senior citizen volunteers at
@SundayParkways
and drove through the route
In the coming weeks, hundreds of families will drop off their young children for their first days as
@PreschoolForAll
students! After years of work, the program is rolling out on time & will continue to expand toward universal, free access.
Recognizing our multimodal transportation champions at
@thestreettrust

Those honored: Metro Councilor Bob Stacey for his lifetime of work;
@KhanhPhamForOR
for her work to improve 82nd Ave, & the inspiring BikePOC PNW, for creating brave spaces for BIPOC riders.
Today I toured Crescent Court, a new affordable housing project in SE PDX that will provide 138 units of affordable & permanent supportive housing. This project is a great example of how we will solve homelessness by helping people get off the streets and into stable housing. 🧵
Nick Fish was a tireless champion for affordable housing, and I was proud to call him my friend. There's no better way for us to honor Commissioner Fish's legacy than this: The Nick Fish complex in SE Portland.
If you haven't yet gotten a
#COVID19
shot, this is your week!
@multco
has clinics throughout our community, including in east Portland.
The vaccines are safe, effective, & provided at no cost. You don't need health insurance, identification or a SS#.
Construction is nearly complete at Las Adelitas! This will be a 141-unit, place-based affordable housing development with unit sizes ranging from studios to three bedrooms for homeless individuals, working families, and people of color in Cully.
The Albina neighborhood is the historic heart of Portland's Black community. The harms that have been inflicted on the area must be acknowledged & addressed. We cannot view Albina as a place people drive through, but instead a neighborhood to be heard, empowered & cared for.
Today I visited the
@multco
Emergency Operations Center, where hundreds of county employees are working tirelessly to protect our community from
#COVID19
.
Thanks to ALL of the hardworking people on the front lines: from the EOC to our grocery stores to our healthcare workers🙏🏾🇺🇸
The benefits of electric buses are many: ZERO carbon emissions, ZERO diesel emissions, reduced noise pollution, smoother ride. We need
@trimet
to commit to an all electric fleet by 2035! Thx to
@enviroregon
for hosting a great event and for your advocacy!
Tonight, as part of a national memorial to remember & honor those Americans who have died of COVID-19, I asked that the
@oregoncc

Over 400,000 Americans have died of COVID thus far, a number that is hard to fathom. (thread...)
Can’t understand how
@repschrader
would be against impeachment after this week's event, let alone compare impeachment to “lynchings.” He needs to apologize.
Lynchings are a tool of white supremacists used to terrorize Black and Brown people. Language like this is unacceptable.
Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-OR, tells House Dems he is against impeaching Trump after the riot at the Capitol, likening it to a "lynching," per a source on the call.
Proud to announce that
@multco
has received a grant from
@meyermt
to support Preschool for All, which aims to bring high quality preschool to all Multnomah County 3 & 4 year olds!
The funding will support engagement w/ parents, providers, teachers & culturally specific partners.
Excited to refer to voters a measure to improve the awesome
@MultCoLib
system!! If passed, the measure will:
-build a flagship library in east county &
-expand, renovate, or construct six branch libraries, including Albina, Belmont, Holgate & Midland. 📚
Fortunately, the threat of wildfire is not increasing in Multnomah County.
@clackamasfire

Every month at a regional transportation meeting, we start by reading the names of those killed on our streets. The silence that follows is a consistent reminder of our need to prioritize people over cars.
It's time to commit, at all levels of government, to

It's official. Congrats, U.S. Transportation Secretary

Given our burgeoning population, warming climate, and values around walkability, health, and alternative transportation, we must make value pricing work. Voicing my support before the Oregon Transportation Commission!

Poor tree canopy coverage can create deadly islands of trapped heat, & the factors that lead to these heat islands are often most prevalent in low-income & BIPOC neighborhoods.
During significant heat waves like those we've seen this summer, these heat islands can become deadly.
I am outraged by today's verdict. Kyle Rittenhouse intentionally crossed state lines, armed himself, and killed two people. We must redouble our efforts to build a justice system where laws are applied equally to all of our communities.
Downtown Portland will always be a great place to live, work, shop, & play. COVID has impacted all of our neighborhoods & businesses, but the bones of our region, & most importantly our values, remain strong.
Happy to help
@SOLVEinOregon
keep downtown Portland clean this AM!
Today I visited one of the new shelters serving homeless folks in east PDX. I was inspired to see our community -especially our
@multco
staff - stepping up to serve.
#COVID19
is forcing all of us to support each other and I’ve been incredibly proud to see so many answer the call!
We need more frequent service & new routes throughout east Portland. This frequent service will mean 16 additional weekday trips & an additional 30 or so on the weekend. That translates to more riders for
@trimet
and fewer cars on the road.👏🏽👏🏽
This article is a great illustration of why it's important for our community to not only curb GHG emissions, but also make investments in climate resiliency infrastructure - especially in areas that have historically received less investment like East PDX.
Last night I briefed the
@PPSConnect
School Board on our plan to bring universal preschool to all 3 & 4 year olds in Multnomah County. Oregon is the 4th least affordable state when it comes to preschool, which is vital to brain development, family well-being & school readiness.
Opened a new shelter Monday & new affordable housing Tues, because people in shelters must have housing to move into.
That’s our path forward: shelter➡️services➡️ stability➡️housing. We need to speed up & enlarge this path, but neglecting one part will land you back at square 1.
Congratulations,
@duncanformetro
! Your experience as a community organizer, advocate, and representative for east Portland's communities will bring a fresh perspective to the

This is a huge victory & an important step on our path to a fossil-free future.
Thx to the Portland City Council, the

This is the most disgraceful moment in modern American history. This is what misinformation, demagoguery & fear have wrought. This is indefensible, unpatriotic & criminal. Anyone supporting this needs ask themself if they stand w/democracy & the rule of law, or w/chaos & sedition
The pedestrian death rate in PDX is 3x higher east of 82nd & 3x higher for Black residents.
79% of fatalities occurred in areas w/o street lights & all occurred in areas w/below median income.
Thx
@OregonWalks
for bringing attention to these inequities.
.
@sarahforpdx
asks: Are our goals around livability at odds with our goals around equity and inclusion?
@RukaiyahAdams
: No, but we’ve decided to make livability a product of our private wealth instead of our common wealth. 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽

The first step to tackling our homelessness emergency is preventing homelessness in the first place, and rental vouchers do just that.

The Portland 2.0 Kick-Off event was a huge success! I want to thank all the panelists and the over 250 attendees who showed up to ask and answer tough questions about how to create a better, more equitable and inclusive city.
Today I joined Albina Vision's Michael Alexander,
@ChloeEudalyPDX

in testifying before the OR Transpo Commission on the importance of partnering w/the local community & stakeholders to make the area & any project that happens a model for equity & social justice
I strongly support this requirement & urge other employers to also require vaccinations.
Vaccinations are safe, effective & key to preventing the spread of

You want freedom? Get vaccinated.
Today's ruling barring the Trump administration from asking about citizenship status on the 2020

The child tax benefit will lift thousands of Oregon children out of poverty, providing families with financial support for stable housing, food security, & childcare needs.
It is a game-changer for children, and needs to be made permanent.
Today we honored the
@LWVofOregon
& 100 years of women's suffrage. At a time when so many are working to undermine voting rights and attack women's autonomy, it has never been more important to celebrate & uplift the hard work women do to build & strengthen our democracy.
A safer 82nd Ave will save lives, transform this corridor and the businesses along it, create walkability where it is lacking, and benefit the many neighborhoods currently divided by this dangerous road.
This is a game changer.
As a preschool provider, a small business owner, a woman of color, & a public employee, Leslee Barnes will be instrumental in leading the rollout of

Those meetings were tough, but fruitful. We now have a shelter supported by the neighborhood & housing our houseless neighbors.
Since the shelter opened, it has served 758 people. And over 250 of those people have transitioned into stable or permanent supportive housing.
