"We were winning but for the new variant" seems to be the evolving narrative. Let's be absolutely clear: we were not winning, and to us a national lockdown announcement to try and rewrite history is abhorrent. 1/3

@mrjamesob NERVTAG minutes about loss of smell. Ear nose and throat specialists are outraged that their alarm bells were given the deaf ear: this “interesting observation” could have meant more self-isolation early on and greater containment overall.

0% pay rise with promise of jam tomorrow. No way. Multiple raids on pension pot, sub inflationary pay rises, worsening overall working conditions and chronic underinvestment. Any “jam tomorrow” clawed back in some other way. A terrible, divisive, ladder-pulling offer. No.

Excellent points made by @mrjamesob caller & Critical Care nurse. We need to talk about 'testing' in the context of an overall strategy and 'capacity' in the context of staffing ratios. Numbers make headlines but don't tell the full story.

Of course the real solution is a properly flexible and modular CCT programme: entry points at any grade, not just two fixed points, with appropriate recognition of OOP competence and experience without arbitrary time limits.

Disappointing messaging from NHS England here. 1000s of patients with care delayed to create *additional* capacity need to know this was part of a wider “war” effort, not “we had this covered”. We absolutely did not: Herculean team effort — including patients — required to cope.

What makes this slow-burn, insidious wave of COVID so scary is the increased length of stay (reduced “turnover”). It means we are slowly moving to an equally precarious situation as at previous peaks but without an obvious “wave” effect. A slow-running tap can also cause a flood.
