Where did TV & screenwriters get the idea that a grown woman in a full face of makeup would ever, under any circumstances, leave a stressful situation to walk into a public restroom and heave handfuls of water into her face
I was able to do a full picket shift because I recently got a new, full-suspension wheelchair that is super comfy and supportive.
And how did I get this chair?

If I’m being honest…
I’m terrified of the strike ending
I wasn’t one of the lucky ones working when we struck & almost all my time in the WGA till now was virtual
I’ve met so many people & been so encouraged
Now I’m scared I’ll go back to being out of work & all alone :(
@jameyjean
I remember watching an episode of Ally Mcbeal (I'm old I know) when I was a kid & she went into the bathroom poured water on her hands then let it fall, when someone asked what she was doing she answered that she was stressed but couldn't wash her face cuz of her foundation
It’s over.
Two years of development earned me good money, WGA healthcare, and tons of connections.
But my dream show—a love letter to my disabled community—will never make it to your TV screen.
Ouchie. 💔
This is a noble sentiment, but it bears remembering that many wonderful writers, especially ones from marginalized backgrounds, haven’t been able to picket because they had to get day jobs to survive/they’re caring for kids or elders/they’re immune-compromised, etc
#WGAStrong
As the
#WGA
negotiations look promising and details like room size are negotiated, I would urge writers to look at the diversity in the picket line vs diversity in the room. And when it comes time to build your team, hire writers that
#walkthewalk
.
Pre-strike, I was waiting patiently for a call from a powerful mentor who’d promised to consider me for an upcoming room I’d be perfect for.
Found out by accident on the picket line that the room got fully staffed before the strike.
Mentors: Why do you do this? 💔
I sold an “unsellable” script at a time when the industry line was “no one’s buying anything”
I got staffed at a time when the industry line was “there are no jobs”
I work in an industry whose line sometimes feels like “no Disabled people”

A depressingly big part of my work as the vice chair of

#DisabilityWrites
I love that I’m seeing so much Disability rep in photos & press coverage of the

I don’t love that we’re being covered at a rate vastly higher than we’re being hired at
We’re 25% of the population & less than 2% of WGA writers
Don’t just take our picture
Hire us
It’s so…interesting…how all of a sudden the studios are telling their “head writers” they still have to come to work for all the non-writing stuff they do.
But if they’re just “head writers” and not “showrunners” why, pray tell, do they have ANY non-writing duties?
#WGAStrong
@JaceSerrano
I like to frame it as you getting to KEEP the 50% of your screenplay that isn’t just grown women splashing water into their fully made-up faces!
A
#disabled
#TVwriter
friend just had to buy a second wheelchair, to leave at the bottom of the steps that lead to their 2nd floor office in a building with no elevator.
But I’m sure that has nothing to do with why disabled people are 26% of the population & 1.6% of TV writers.
I couldn’t understand how so many people were fine just sending their entire unchangeable DNA to a private company
Those people didn’t understand why I was concerned
This is why I was concerned
🚨BREAKING: Genetics firm 23andMe confirms user data theft in a credential stuffing attack.
The hackers released 1 million lines of data targeting Ashkenazi Jews.
It’s also a dog whistle to *some people* in this town who HATE how many writers from historically marginalized communities have made gains in the last decade. They know staffing minimums make it more likely that BIPOC/LGBTQ+/Disabled writers get a voice in Hollywood.
#WGAStrong
Ask yourself, of all the proposals, why is *this* one brought up in every single one of these leaked articles? Every time. Not AVOD, not Schedule A, not the feature proposals. Nope, this one and streaming residuals.

UPDATE: Got both chairs in what appears to be working order
Hard to consider it a victory when I spent my whole evening sitting in a wheelchair I couldn’t even push myself in at the airport
And there is absolutely nothing stopping them from doing it to me again Sunday
Yes AND not all people who couldn’t picket are Disabled. In fact, we have been out on the line a ton! I hate that I feel the need to point this out, because I don’t want potential bosses thinking “If they can’t even picket, how can they work in a writers’ room??” 😑
#WGAStrong
Friends there were a LOT of people who couldn’t picket due to a number of reasons. It does not mean they didn’t support the strikes or don’t deserve the same consideration. Let’s not leave our disabled writers out of the equation.

@crazyclipsonly
I ride in the bike lane when I’m out on a workout. It’s more level than the sidewalk and I’m going much closer to the speed of a bike than a walking person (~8 min/mile).
And if you block a curb cut, I *have to* ride in the street.
The script that didn’t get me into Writers On The Verge got me the pitch meeting where I sold my first show…to NBC. 🙃
Don’t let a fellowship rejection get you down! It means literally nothing about who you are, how good your script is or what your career prospects will be.
For those who got rejections today, my “losing” script made me a Disney Writing Fellowship Finalist, got me multiple generals, & has been liked by showrunners.
Normal to feel disappointed, but they not seeing your value is on them. Keep getting better. Your wins are coming.

I sold an ensemble drama featuring four (4!) Disabled leads. I was told the network loved it because “we’ve never seen anything like this!”
When they passed, the reason I was given was—you guessed it—“we’ve never seen anything like this.”
TV development memory. Executive: unfortunately we already have a show about a disabled character. Me: cool, but featuring a disabled character doesn't mean the story is about their disability. Executive: but we already have a show about a disabled character

This is a scene from the (wonderful) 1993 film THE JOY LUCK CLUB. The man pictured is trying to be helpful by drenching the entire shared entree—not just the portion on his own plate—with soy sauce. So the issue here isn’t the sauce, it’s his misguided attempt to be “helpful.” 😆

And finally…
I know for a fact that my boss, John Rogers, will HATE that I am giving him public credit for this.
He didn’t do it to be recognized or praised.
He did it because I needed it and he needed me.
Because I am disabled & ALSO a kickass writer. 😈

We rescued this very good boy 2.5 years ago. He was already 14 & had a ton of health issues. We knew he was unlikely to be adopted by someone else & we fell in love.
We held him as he said goodbye tonight. Losing him was always in the cards, but man it HURTS.

I would 100000% prefer to be ghosted. At least then I could pretend the person just died or something, instead of having taken a cool, emotionless survey of their life and decided I was such a problem I had to be deleted immediately.

As someone who is good friends with the “head writers” who just got fired off this Disney+ version, I really appreciate how kind you have been about this. People on here seem to want you to gloat, but you haven’t given them the pleasure. That’s made me an even bigger fan of you🙏🏻
I just want you all to know that I have gotten so much better at parallel parking since I’ve been paralyzed and I legit believe it’s because I’m essentially a lil car now
So YOU,
@DrewBarrymore
, want to provide what WE WRITERS usually provide. But since WE WRITERS are on strike, you’re going to go ahead and do our jobs YOURSELF.

Haha true but they’re usually washing their faces, because what splashing a bunch of water into your face is really good at is removing makeup
Reader…I could’ve cried.
An accommodation! That I didn’t even have to ask for! Because an ally asked first!
And when the Showrunner says “We’re shipping a wheelchair to the production office,” the production office says, “Yes sir!”
So that’s what we did.
This accommodation was a small expense for a TV show. It didn’t disrupt anything or anyone. It didn’t slow anything or anyone down. Nobody on set was even aware it had been done for me.
And the conversation started not with me but with someone with the power to ACT.
Even more amazing was his response to what I told him:
“Wow, that sucks. Would it ease your mind if production shipped one of your spare chairs to NOLA ahead of time? That way you’d KNOW you had a functioning chair there regardless of what happens on the flight.”
But it was a huge load off my mind to know that, even if they did, I’d be okay.
I’d be able to cover set.
To do my job.
The DREAM JOB that I fought like hell to get.

At 25% of the US population & LESS THAN 1% of writers, Disabled people are THE most underrepresented historically marginalized group in the Guild
To get to parity just in TV writing, we’d need like a dozen seasons of ALL SRs ONLY hiring Disabled writers. Which is, well—lol
It’s 2023 and our best message for

is still reassuring people we are human beings?
My hot take: We don’t need non-disabled people to be more aware of our disabilities. We need them to be more aware of their

With the WGA voting to authorize a strike, writers around Twitter have been explaining exactly why a new contract is so necessary. Hearing from some of those writers really helped me understand the state of TV today:
If the ADA was gutted, my day to day life would be massively impacted
I rely on its protections to ensure I can have a social, work & civic life
Disabled people are not “scammers” for enforcing a 30+ year old civil rights law
We NEED the ADA

One story that fell under the radar this week but is super important: The Supreme Court preserved the Americans with Disabilities Act while also outlining how it will get the ADA in the future. Here's a Thread: 1/

I actually think there’s a tipping point, where your attractiveness can move from being an asset to a liability. An unusually handsome or beautiful writer gets the side-eye. Like, “there’s no way someone that hot can write.”
The airline thankfully did not wreck my gorgeous full-suspension everyday wheelchair that I got through
@WGAWest
health insurance and which took me through 5 months of picketing.
THIS time.
I’m not even talking about advocating for accessibility, or encouraging people to hire us
I literally spend so much time just being like, “Hey there! Noticed you left Disabled folks off that list/speech/candidate statement! Would love it if you remembered we are writers too!”
We all hope there’s a deal today, but if not… that means the things our negotiators are holding out for are *important*.
Things that could affect writers’ lives and careers in the near term and for decades to come.
We’ve put 144 days into this. Let’s end it right.
