What works to reduce covid: masks, hepa filtration, ventilation, social distancing, hand washing. What doesn't work: plexiglass, foggers, plasmas/bipolar ionisation. I'm sick of seeing money wasted on pointless technologies that don't actually help and may make things worse

So friends child had a positive LFT result and told by school & council not to get a PCR test and isolate for 10 days. They got a PCR and it's negative. Can anyone comment on why should this protocol is being used? I know its a low false +ve rate but millions being tested.

So happy to have managed to change my uni's face mask policy so now all indoor spaces, with a few exceptions, require a face mask. And I have to say that twitter has played a huge part in giving me the evidence and confidence I needed. So thank you amazing aerosol experts!

The best thing both lecturers and students personally can do this week to prevent spread of #Covid_19 is to wear a mask. And get a good one if you can. Three layer cloth or even better an FFP2 although this is a more expensive option (about 80p each on amazon) #COVIDisAirborne

Excellent thread on choosing air purifiers. HEPA is proven technology. I would avoid ionisers and plasmas due to possible formation of harmful side products. (Also they are expensive and unproven). A few options here are available in the UK.

There we have it. 3 days back in school and the 11 year old has a sore throat. Almost immediate reaction on LFD (swabbed nose and throat) and PCR just come back positive. Great. Thankfully seems mild so far. Wish us luck!

I don't agree with fees full stop, but this is an insult to our profession. All the lecturers I know worked for hours, creating new online material, becoming video content producers, captioning and in many cases having caring or home schooling. They did not get less teaching here

Adding ozone into a room, then clearing it out will be pretty much useless to stop the transmission #COVID this is a waste of money. Use ventilation and extra filtration if needed. #COVIDisAirborne Ozone is a harmful gas and these systems should be used by trained professionals

@zeynep @trishgreenhalgh It's amazing. In the UK we have an actual society of aerosol scientists with almost a 1000 members, many of whom have been working hard over the last 18 months to provide this evidence. We even have a world leading centre for doctoral training in Aerosol Science.

7 years ago today was the grand opening of the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories @AtmosChemYork at the @UniOfYork In that time we've grown from 27 researchers to ~ 60!! It is a friendly and multidisciplinary environment (and normally there are lots of yummy cakes).

As the UK opens up a little more tomorrow, remember that 2m distance is not enough to prevent spread indoors. Keep those masks on. If you are a business, forget the plexiglass and look at ventilation and filtration. Stay away from plasmas, ionisers, hydroxyl and ozone add ons.

Somedays I really like my artwork and then there are days like today. I failed to replicate the beauty of @i_ameztoy earth observation images this morning. I've had to seriously edit the photo of my attempt (make much darker!) to get anywhere near the colours! Still had fun.

Am I reading this correctly? As of today, if I get COVID-19 my kids can still go to school if they don't have symptoms? And my husband can go to work as double vaccinated. This is just crazy.

What are England and Northern Ireland’s new rules on self-isolation?

Fully vaccinated people no longer have to self-isolate if they are close contacts of a positive Covid case

Today is #MentalHealth awareness day. This time last year I was a few weeks away from burnout and needed 6 weeks off. I was sitting in my car before work with dread in my heart. This year has been hard but getting help was so important and gave me the tools to look after myself.

We have a 42 months post doc position @AtmosChemYork looking at organic emissions indoors in both the gas and particle phase. (Also with @TJD193 ). This is part of the multidisciplinary INGENIOUS project led by @NicCarslaw . Applications close tomorrow.

Just submitted my first 1st author paper in 8 years! I had forgotten how nerve racking it is making sure you conform to all the guidelines (and im sure there are loads of errors). Reminds me to be more supportive to those in my group in future! #AcademicTwitter

Many aerosol scientists pivoted to do covid related research and gave up huge amounts of their time. Suggesting they should be sacked or comparing them to skeletons for eating out is uncalled for.
