My wife became a 🇺🇸citizen🇺🇸 today!
What a long process. She waited 27 years for this. !YEARS!
She was a dreamer that went from kindergarten in Queen to becoming a biotech engineer at
@PennEngineers
and she now works in developing vaccines to protect us from deadly diseases.
Got word that paper
#9
was just accepted from my grad work. Reminiscing on how certain people were sure I was going to Master out. I had to switch labs and had to retake my prelim/candidacy exam. I really almost gave up if it weren’t for
@IshmailSaboor
and
@jscdavis
!
Helping people out with their grad school essays made me realize and put into perspective how far I have come as a scientist. Optimistic and excited for whats to come in the Ahmed lab.
What I learned about the
#GameStop
stock situation... is when regular people start the come up, now those in power want to change the rules. This happens in every sphere of our society.
#academia
is not exempt.
So this is caged-oxytocin in action.

Eid Mubarak to all my fellow brothers and sisters.
This Ramadan, for me, was full of self-reflection. No matter my ups and downs… my issues pale in comparison to others around the world.
I am praying for lasting peace and prosperity for all.
Today was the last day of my

I was once told by a “diversity” officer at a large research institution, “how are you even Hispanic... you dont speak Spanish and your name doesnt sound Hispanic”. I just laughed inside about their ignorance.
Virginia Lee is Legendary and very Generous. I remember I was applying for my F99/K00 and I just wanted a letter of support / consultant from her. She said I ll raise you one… I will be your co-sponsor ❤️

Ah, there's nothing like getting back to my people after a long week. The faculty job search is a grind. I am glad there is traction 🫶
But everything fades to the background when I see my babies.
Exhaustion gone.
Overstimulation gone.
Imposter syndrome is gone.
Yes! Got the
@NIH_LRP
renewal in. In the nick of time, in pure Ismail fashion. Shout out to the lady from help desk who helped me resolve my error. You a real one!
I am hopeful I ll be student debt free after this! 🤞🤞🤞
Smh. I cant blv I ever stressed the opinion someone had in my ability to do science. This person is no longer running their lab and has pivoted careers.
I literally almost mastered out because of this person. What hurt is they questioned my dedication!
Eid Al-Adha Mubarak to everyone celebrating today! For those wondering why there is another Eid, this one marks the end of the Islamic pilgrimage. Eid Al-Fitr on the other hand marks the end of fasting during the month Ramadan ☺️

(Well we try again… resilience is 🔑)
So if I win any type award... should I be concerned my PI is a white male? Or is it just the “diversity” ones? Asking for a friend?
Also congrats

yeah I suffer from imposter syndrome like every other URM trainee. But seeing my friends who are also my mentors and role models like
@IshmailSaboor
@bjmarlin
kill it and make it in this profession chips away at the insecurity everyday and allows me to believe I can do it.
@iaahmed123
@HHMINEWS
Some of the students today at NYU asked me about imposter syndrome. I said we don't wake up looking to be imposters, but after years of hearing that the reasons for your success are really not because of you, of course imposter syndrome affects you.

You don’t want to miss this one! Add it to your calender and come learn about how chemical tools can help answer your neuroscience questions. See details:
Just want to add one thing… choose a place where you can see yourself working for more than one PI. Just bc you want to be in their lab doesnt mean they want you. Speaking from experience.
1.Choose PI(s) not programs 2.Ask current students, esp the minority ones, if they feel supported, 3. Be unapologetically yourself, 4. Ask yourself if you'll be happy there- you cant do good science if you are miserable, 5. Ask about insurance coverage for mental health!
The incident
@NYCMayor
is referring to is horrible!
I am getting post 9/11 Islamophobia flashbacks that I experienced as an 8th grader.
I did not really want to share this, but I randomly got called a terrorist this past Friday… shrugged it off but not everyone can do that.
Islamophobia is hate. Plain and simple.
This vile, disrespectful rhetoric has no home in our city. We reject it — and we're glad to see we're not alone.
Some very obnoxious behavior by MAGA supporters in NYC last few days. Mobs shutting down highways , tunnels and bridges. If minorities do a such thing NYPD will bring “law and order”...

The postdoc experience needs a revamp. Yes, you can get by and endure… but why? Should we not try to make the research enterprise better for all?
@neubadah

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I went through a rough patch in grad school, and I thought of mastering out.

For all those of you wanting to apply to grad school… you got this!
Don’t let anyone deter you or say you are reaching. My God, if I listened to some of the voices I would never be here today.
This is very real. I am half Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 and had some of these types of interactions growing up but it was most pronounced in Academia when I was looking for my community.
(Other half Bengali 🇧🇩in case you were curious, lol)
#Mixed
people often face rejection from the racial communities they belong to. It hurts when someone Asian says I don’t look Asian (enough to belong). Wearing this shirt, I set myself up for microaggressions but also hope to broaden our understanding of what Asian can look like.
Hugged my son so hard and just thought to myself, I may just have to have him homeschooled. This is madness! The insecurity of what is supposed to be the most prosperous nation of the world is maddening.
I wanted to share this recent photo taken at a celebration for Dick Tsien’s tenure as director of

This picture evoked a feeling of being tremendously fortunate of having supportive mentors and an environment tailored to push you to fulfill your potential.
The sudden loss of
@lyoun03
echoes somberly across the many communities he has touched. He was an inspiring scientist, the kindest of people, and full of life. His generosity was unparalleled and he was a staunch supporter of junior scientists. He will be profoundly missed!
It is with an unbelievably heavy heart that I write that my husband, best friend, and partner in crime for 20 years, Larry Young, passed away unexpectedly. I will share details regarding a memorial service once I know something. Please share with those who knew Larry

In recognition of
#HispanicHeritageMonth
I’d like to celebrate that part of me. Yeah my name is of biblical/Arabic/Hebrew origins… but it was the name my Puerto Rican mom also liked because it reminded her of hers and her moms favorite Puerto Rican singer, Ismael Miranda.
