Agustín Fuentes grossly misrepresents the sex binary in (guess where?) Scientific American; argues that those who accept a binary do so out of bigotry, transphobia, and racism – Why Evolution Is True

4/9 (Not everyone has to agree! This was supposed to be philosophy, isn’t disagreement central to it?) She articulates & defends reasonable views, which IMO deserve to be part of relevant policy debates.

us that part of the reason we should reject the sex binary is because believing it restricts social acceptance of gender diversity. I’m not upset with Fuentes because I think some of his scientific claims are wrong. I’m upset about what’s happening to the practice of science,

The horrible story about a man recently convicted of murder after killing a cat and then a man in the UK is a perfect example of why it's so dangerous for the media to refer to men as women and use she/her pronouns. This is how this @guardian article begins: "A woman who…

There's certainly no one way to do mothering "right," and sometimes those evolved mechanisms don't quite work in our modern environments, fit our lives or who we want to be. But none of this means that the maternal instinct is a myth, let alone one that men created.

Big news in 2024: sex is real and biological. NHS Health Secretary: “We need to be making this robust case to refuse to wipe women out of the conversation.” Part of that is the acknowledgment that sex is a biological fact, so this is a step forward by the NHS. This fact matters,…

The NHS reveal changes to their constituation, declaring that 'sex is a matter of biology'. The changes may see trans patients being allocated single rooms, and also give female patients the right to request to be treated by a doctor of the same sex. #ThisMorning

9/9 It's past time for this to end. To me it’s about thinking for oneself, engaging seriously & respectfully w/ colleagues & arguments, academic freedom. Again, none of this precludes care & compassion for all kinds of people; in fact, it benefits all. We can do it! 🙏🏽

I'm quote-tweeting this because my initial response generated a lot of discussion and I want to get it right. (FYI my dissertation was on sex differences in spatial ability, so I'm sure that's biased my view of this issue.) It's funny that I asked for help from Chris Chabris…

@LeorSapir Well the evidence linking spatial ability to chess skill isn’t as clear as I thought. It’s mixed. The male advantage in spatial ability is very clear, however. So I’ll look into it and get back to you! @cfchabris do you have any insights here?

evaluate claims, listen to the opposition, consider implications of what they learn, and arrive at their views in light of facts rather than ideology. And finally, I’ll support the rights of gender minorities no matter what anyone tells me about clownfish.

8/9 e.g., you don’t want to engage w/ her directly cause you don't have “a developed enough view" about her work. Fine, but then why take to twitter to criticize its quality? This kind of vague but harsh attack is not unfamiliar to Stock, her supporters, & many others.
