I wrote a short essay describing the very unusual and ethically troubling differences in clinical guidelines between the US and some other LGBT+ friendly countries in pediatric gender care. The US should commission systematic reviews of the evidence.

The most striking thing about the “What is a Woman” documentary is how Matt Walsh—Matt Walsh—is able to make highly educated “progressives” look stupid. And it’s not due to entrapment or selective editing. It’s because the ideas are fundamentally incoherent.

A deep oddity confronting anyone who starts thinking about these issues is that if "gender affirming care" affirms gender, then gender must be directly related to one's sexed body, but it's also an axiom of the pro-affirmation view that one's gender is independent of one's body.

@jessesingal Directly encouraging named individuals to kill themselves is ok. What’s not ok is “stochastic terrorism,” where what you say is purportedly implicated in some extremely causally vague pattern of behavior, such that I can accuse you of doing evil when we disagree.

@jessesingal And this in the context of an article purporting to explain to journalists how they can do better, more accurate reporting, in part by relying on people like the author of the article. This is “who are you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?” type stuff.

Putting aside the question of whether ROGD has been "debunked": Perhaps I missed it, and perhaps my Control-F function is broken, but I don't believe the Cass report mentions ROGD anywhere. It cites one Littman paper but that one is on detransitioners, not ROGD. So, odd criticism

Seriously. The ROGD paper was based on a poll of parents commenting on a transphobic website; yet. As an entity, it's been debunked. Yet Cass accepts the horrible quality "evidence" for ROGD, while weaponizing the EBM paradigm to declare the evidence for GA care low quality.

In my field--academic philosophy--a similar dynamic played out, with an intense anti-intellectualism that smeared colleagues--and especially women--as dangers to their students and as bigots. It's been shameful and I hope it's coming to an end.

Edmiston now claims he wrote a sentence for the adult chapter that was the model for the sentence in the adolescent ch. Not plausible, given the emphasis on youth, and the adult chapter does not contain any similar sentence. “I wrote the sentence but it lives in Canada.”

@Ludovicmartxoak @jessesingal @christapeterso She has an attorney and has referred to taking counsel's advice elsewhere. Safe to assume that's the case here. But remember: none of this has to do with the truth. It's all about the policing of acceptable opinion and the intimidation of others. Fortunately, it's not working.

Activists break university windows, part of a smear campaign against Holly Lawford-Smith, who defends views they do not like. The admin criticizes the vandalism and the pattern of intimidation against Lawford-Smith. Read the union's response.

Given the recent US whistleblower and what we are learning from Hannah Barnes's forthcoming book, I bet high-ranking admins at hospitals and lawyers are meeting with the directors of their siloed gender clinics, and I bet the lawyers brought calculators.

@JDHaltigan What I don't understand is how it gets published. This purports to be an article taking the NYT to task for shoddy journalism, and it's just rife with basic errors that anyone who has looked at primary sources can immediately identify as flagrant falsehoods.

One plausible explanation here, which the author doesn't entertain, is that both phenomena are due to the same underlying causes.

This is false. "To wit," Lawford-Smith's longest treatment of these issues was published as a book, Gender-Critical Feminism, by OUP in 2022. Both she and Stock have published on sex and gender in academic outlets. They certainly don't claim their Twitter is "scholarship." 1/2

To wit, Stock and Lawford-Smith "have published" in philosophy, but much of their current work is not in philosophy publications, not subject to peer review, and yet is taken to be "scholarship." That said, philosophy tends to publish the wildest shit, so...

This letter is amusing for many reasons. One is that it claims that even before its publication the Cass review was “comprehensively critiqued in a peer-reviewed journal.” If true, this would be very exciting indeed, as it would provide good evidence of time travel.

@NPRmelissablock @NPR Dr Evans claims research shows suicidal ideation and attempts go down, and you provide a link to a NEJM study. That study did not report anything about suicidality or attempts. This should be corrected. (Also two kids in that study committed suicide.)

A naive observer who reads Reed's testimony and thinks, "it can't be, it's too monstrous," they are years behind. When activist-clinicians say "affirm gender identity, don't pathologize" this is what it means. These are the actual, endorsed policies.

Not gonna waste much time on this, but a couple things: You've already suggested I'm transphobic and that I mistreat students. Now you insinuate that I'm somehow implicated in ableism as well. You throw in some random citations and a few big words, drawing specious connections..1

Communications theory, actually. Let's do this again with philosophy. The kinds of comments you've made, embodied in the tweet below, belong to a class of speech acts that position the target of the act as infantile or engaging in something other than legitimate scholarship.

Right. ROGD is a hypothesis meant to explain a widely documented phenomenon. Even WPATH guidelines explain that social influence may play a role and updated European documents discuss this as well. That this is still ignored or denied by some influential voices is troubling.

ROGD is the name researchers have given to a theory that may explain the recent rise in older natal female teens ID'ing as transgender and presenting for treatment (which is, objectively, "a thing"). What motivates the clinicians/researchers who use this term is an opinion.
