The end of #roaming charges in the EU was a great relief in Ireland/N.Ireland border region. E.g. In my sister's house in Fermanagh you could incur charges by moving from one room to another. In a #NoDeal Brexit, roaming charges will be at the discretion of the phone companies.

Story here is that May's Plan B will entail trying for bilateral UK-Ireland treaty to replace the #backstop . 🤦🏻‍♀️🙇‍♀️ Ireland cannot negotiate anything with UK that's within EU competence. Ergo, no bilateral treaty cd avoid customs or replace EU laws underpinning cross border coop.

An article @Telegraph online in which I make 3 audacious claims: 1⃣ #Backstop exists because UK cannot unilaterally withdraw from @BelfastAgmt 2⃣ 1998 Agmt obliges UK to avoid a hard @BorderIrish 3⃣ #Protocol thus protects a precious feat of UK diplomacy.

The backstop is there to protect a remarkable achievement for British diplomacy

One objection to the ‘Irish backstop’ in the Withdrawal Agreement is that, if it did come into effect, its provisions could only be dropped by mutual consent.
