Deep Tech VC: Puts on pot of coffee to read 5th nature paper for the evening while trying to discern 5yr trajectory of an entire scientific field
B2B Enterprise VC: YOLOs into 3 month old genAI company at $100m pre that doesn’t even have product yet
We are not the same
I joined
@DCVC
as the first hire when we had <$100m AUM. Today we announced $725m for our fifth flagship Deep Tech fund. The trajectory has been insane.
Excited to continue to back entrepreneurs building deep tech companies to transform industries and address the world's challenges
And thankful to our LPs for entrusting us to do so
Not if you’re building in deep tech it’s not.
@DCVC
recently announced $1B+ in new funds to back ambitious entrepreneurs tackling the worlds most important problems.
If this describes you, consider getting in touch.
Is it really the worst time to fundraise in history???
I wanted to make sure, so I asked my smartest VC & founders-who've-raised-recently friends and this is what they said:
@JayaGup10
Deep Tech VC: Hundreds of satellites in space, novel life saving treatments, nitrogen fertilizer with zero emission, rapid wildfire response and prevention
B2B Enterprise VC: 15 min office supply deliver
Deep tech entrepreneurs are still like the top row … 💪🏻 🚀 ✈️ 🤖 🦠 🏥 💪🏻
Sequencers in basements. Rocket engines on bicycles. Optics tables in garages.
Every one of those is a real story.

@DCVC
and still found this a very insightful read. Here are some of my crib notes 1/n
Excited to finally be able to talk about what
@ron_alfa
, Jacob Rinaldi, and the whole
@noetik_ai
team have been working on
Spatial biology + AI = better cancer therapies, faster

Huge congrats to
@RecursionChris
and the
@RecursionPharma
team.
You’re just at the beginning of decoding biology. Excited to see where you go from here!
Energy storage is one of the pressing issues of our time
@ADVANOTech
simultaneously improves energy density, reduces total cost, can scale to global demand, & fits into existing battery manufacturing infrastructure
Proud
@DCVC
was an early supporter!
To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, til death?
@joannezchen
: I do.
Also, to never watch ahead on a shared Netflix show?
@joannezchen
: Impossible.
2020 has been tough, but the future is bright
I know because I am lucky enough to see the 1000s of hardworking people across the
@DCVC
portfolio _creating_ that future every day
Tune in to this thread and you can hear directly from them too
/thread DCVC portfolio companies employ thousands of talented engineers, scientists and PhDs who work on frontier technologies. They have a unique perspective on the progress we’re making and the reasons we should be optimistic for the future.

Great post by
@zackbogue
on how
@DCVC
is wielding VC to fight climate change, disease, and in general make the world more resilient.
Good returns while doing good.
Responding to the climate emergency is the defining set of hard technical problems of our time. Read more about
@DCVC
’s resiliency thesis on the

Agenda Blog.
Perspective / reflection on what led up to the SVB situation from a very senior friend at a top global bank who isn't allowed to tweet.
This is more background context than the more recent events of the past week

Interested in quantum computing?
@DCVC
portfolio company
@rigetti
is inviting the best and brightest in the developer community to its first (read: first anywhere) QC Hackathon.
Apply here:
PhD in QC not required!
One my earliest memories at
@DCVC
is being in a conference room w/ Karsten Temme and
@mattocko
when Matt offered to lead
@pivotbio
's 1st round
Amazing to see Pivot from moon shot to moon landing
Congrats to the entire Pivot team and h/t to Matt
When your dinner conversation starts off with, “So one of the key tenants of Sith philosophy is The Rule of Two ...” you know you found the right woman.

$70B+ a year are spent on clinical trials. If you care at all about making this critical part of medicine better and faster you need to know
@charleskfisher
what he and his team are building at
@UnlearnAI
I don't like the concept of statistical significance because it is more important to know "is the effect big" than "what would we have observed if there was no effect". Here's a simple a way to interpret clinical trials without statistical significance

Thanks
@TheEconomist
for hosting me at “Commercialising Quantum” today!
Excited about the quantum computing opportunities of tomorrow and the quantum sensing opportunities of today!
If you put your personal item in the overhead bin instead of under your seat … and then make a big deal about it when someone kindly asks you to move it so they can put their carry-on luggage there …
… then you’re an asshole
Excited to finally be able to talk about
@DCVC
's investment in ShennonBio - which is accelerating immunotherapy target discovery. Congrats to Li Sun and the entire ShennonBio team on coming out of stealth.
I am also thankful to all the entrepreneurs we've been fortunate enough to back and work alongside. They are the reason we get to do what we do. There are too many to list, but if you're curious then many of the companies can be seen here:
“‘Deep Tech’ offers an investment opportunity at least 5-10 times larger than most of venture funding's current focus.”
Great insights from my partner
@zackbogue
in case you missed them
Three years ago I wrote an internal investment memo titled 'Rebuilding the Tower of Babel' about NLP and it’s missing 'image net' moment
Was fun to revisit as ChatGPT has clearly been that moment ...

@TIME
recognizes
@DCVC

@pivotbio
as one of 2020's Best Inventions. Really proud of
@karsten
and the Pivoteers, reimagining agriculture, improving farmer economics, and rolling back the climate clock
You know you’ve made it when other companies start requiring proficiency in your software in order to just apply for a job there 😜

This is TERRIBLE position
Here’s some better advice: If you feel like you are not informed enough then GO INFORM YOURSELF by doing some reading and THEN go vote.
Twitter wants me to encourage you to vote. But I'm not going to do that. I instead encourage you to *honestly* ask yourself if you are better informed than other likely voters about which candidates are better for us all. Just cause you have a side/team, doesn't mean better info.
Huge news.

I remember when
@MJBiercuk
pitched me in 2018 on the idea that
@qctrlHQ
software would be a key enabling technology on every quantum computer
Amazing to see this vision start becoming a reality
Disclaimer: A happy investor in this one ;)
@arjunsethi
Was doing frontier, space, & manufacturing before it was cool … and still doing them now!
Same with applied AI. First check into a generative AI company was *checks notes*

There are two kinds of people in this world.
Those who put the cap back on the toothpaste when they’re done and those who wake up and choose chaos every morning.
‘The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.’
- George Bernard Shaw
🥂 to all the unreasonable men and women out there
Amazing how many exceptions there are in venture. A business of extremes.
99% of the time something could be a bad idea and then that 1% of the time … it’s the BEST idea
In case you missed it last week,
@noetik_ai
launched out of stealth with $14m in funding - led by
@DCVC
- to use spatial biology to develop immune-oncology drugs
Great article today from
@GENbio
1 - Loyal has earned what we believe is the FDA’s first-ever formal acceptance that a drug can be developed + approved for lifespan extension
2 - We have 'technical section complete' AKA the 'does it work' data for LOY-001 - our large dog lifespan extension drug - is done
