Asking people of color how they will ✨improve and advocate for diversity✨ at predominantly white programs and institutions is like if my landlord was like "how do u plan to improve living conditions in your building"… like no that is on you
A man spit at me and another woman on the subway platform today. I'm mostly in shock rn, and also struggling with the urge to dismiss what happened, to tell myself that it was just the kind of thing that happens every day in NYC
I'm physically fine. But it was a frightening (not to mention gross) thing to have happen during what is an already pretty scary time for so many of us, especially Asian women
I won a Pushcart Prize!!!! Thank you so much
@garson_scott
and
@Wigleaf
for publishing and nominating my piece about a horny, hungry praying mantis and her appetites 🥰
Feels fitting that today I am going to support
@RedCanarySong
for the
#8LivesVigil
in Washington Square Park, in honor of the eight lives lost in last year's Atlanta spa shootings. There is so much to grieve right now.
My therapist told me recently I need to find ways to have fun and be creative that aren't necessarily connected to writing, to give my writing brain time to unwind -- so what are things yall like to do? How does fun happen (lol)
Incredibly thrilled to say that GREEN FROG, my second book and my first collection of short stories, is done / off to production!!!!! Coming to you sometime in 2024, with a whole new cast of characters, including even more animals and some magic 💚

The fallout from the cancellation of the 2023 Asian American Literary Festival by
@smithsonian
leadership is immense. Please read our thread here to learn more about the devastating impact this has had on our communities.
Over $99,000 was invested in the participation of writers from Aotearoa & Australia in the AALF, as reported by
@TheSpinoffTV
. The abrupt cancellation by the
@smithsonian
is a devastating loss to the cross-cultural connections that could've been forged.
SEA CHANGE is an
@ElectricLit

So... my contributor copies of
@kenyonreview

Very much screaming over my

Ok I'm gonna do a Year in Writing thread for myself, because 1 year ago I had never published anything and 2 years ago I was about ready to give up on writing, and one of the things I've learned from this year is that we gotta celebrate the good stuff when it happens 🍾🎉 (1/10)
My debut short story collection GREEN FROG (
@VintageAnchor
) is hopping into stores on March 12! Come help me celebrate my amphibian Pisces baby at one or more of my events in NYC, CT, Louisiana, and NJ! 🐸
I have a story up on
@ElectricLit
today from GREEN FROG (which comes out 2MRW!!!). It's about memory, a slightly otherworldly spa, and the lengths we'll go to keep from being haunted. Thank you so much to
@jadessong
, author of the brilliant CHLORINE, for recommending this one 💜
In this week’s Recommended Reading, Jade Song (
@jadessong
) recommends “Presence” from Gina Chung’s (
@ginathechung
) GREEN FROG, in which a woman erases her painful memories, but is stalked by something she calls “the presence” as a result.
OMG 💙💙 My piece was the first runner-up in the
@LAReview
contest!!! Thank you so much to the Review and the judges and so so many congratulations to all the winners and runners-up!!! My heart is singing 💕💕

It’s proofs time for the short story collection 🥹🐸💚 Legit got chills when I opened up this ms to see the “Also By” page — just a few years ago I despaired of ever having anything published, and now I get to have a second book coming out into the world, what is my life
An important thread on the abrupt and deeply violent cancelation of the Asian American Literary Festival by
@smithsonian
leadership. Please read and share the open letter:
On July 5th the Asian American Literature Festival was suddenly canceled by
@smithsonian
leadership, just weeks in advance. Without explanation, they erased months of planning work and canceled a unique and historically significant event.
My heart is singing and I am crying; Everything Everywhere All At Once had me sobbing so hard in the theater when I saw it, my mask got soggy. Congratulations to all of us, Asian family <3
Got some fun headshots taken at the Kundiman Retreat by the very talented
@jessxsnow
-- I look like a slightly pissed off, plucky small town detective who solves murders in the 90s and I'm not mad about it

@picadorbooks
It’s out in August, and is the story of Ro, who, when her world implodes, is helped through it all by Dolores, her Pacific Octopus.
Honestly, this could not be any more my kind of novel!
My writer friends and I joke a lot about how arduous and “inefficient” writing can be, but it is truly the messiness that makes it rewarding. The stops and starts, the searching, the pondering — it’s all part of the deeply joyful and serious play/work of writing
I hope more writers will, in the current conditions, be open about the beautiful irrationality at the heart of writing. You can box it in by talking about word counts and whatnot, but at the heart is a raging fire and *being lost* and a deep disrespect for cordial efficiency.
Yall, first review for Green Frog is in, from
@PublishersWkly
and I couldn't be more thrilled!! They called it "dynamic," among many other things, and said, "Chung’s talents are on full display in these contemplative tales." 🥹✨✨
Friends, I have a short essay (about 1200 words) on my relationship to silence & shame and my experiences w/anti-Asian racism. As a primarily fiction writer / nonfiction newbie, would welcome any recs you might have for lit outlets that take personal essays? <3
Honored & thrilled to have a new piece in

So much of adulthood is just giving yourself deadlines to do things by and then... not doing them and then being like, "Okay, how about tomorrow" and then ad infinitum until you either finally get it done or you find peace in never doing it
Thank you to
@lithub
for publishing this essay on what we can learn from folklore as we think about crafting fiction and character arcs, as well as how the Korean fable of the green frog influenced my writing and my debut short story collection!
WHAT A NITE!!! ✨✨ Had SO much fun talking to the incredible Weike Wang
@booksaremagicbk
about the process of writing SEA CHANGE, octopus influencers, female friendship, writing the surreal, and more. If you missed our convo, you can catch it here!
I just got proofs for my forthcoming story in the
@FrictionSeries
Legacy issue. This is the first print acceptance I've ever gotten for my fiction and I am EMOTIONAL seeing it all laid out and w/such beautiful artwork 💖💛 Can't wait for the world to meet her.
I'm overwhelmed by all of your messages of support and solidarity. I think one of the hardest things about experiencing racism and hate is how isolating it can be, how small it can make you feel
Will be forever grateful to
@splitlipthemag
for publishing the story that started it all, which then became the title story for my debut collection. Thank you thank you thank you. Also: submit your work to them. They are incredible!!! 💚💚💚

hello, hi! I've assembled a list of 2023 books I'm anticipating from women of color, the year ahead looks about as alarming as usual but hey the books will be splendid 💛
So it turns out that sipping an iced coffee in the sunshine & warmth and then walking a million steps is pretty good for the olde mental health… fascinating discoveries…
Dipping my toes into discourse to say that no matter where u go for an MFA (u also don't have to do one!), if ur lucky enough to meet brilliant, funny, big-hearted ppl like
@vanjchan
in urs, hold on to them! Writing might be solitary but literary community is forever 💕
Iowa discourse again…A reminder that I was rejected from almost every mfa program I applied to (def all the fully funded prestige ones) & managed to start, learn how to, eventually write & complete a novel at the place I ended up at, alongside top tier talent incl

What are your favorite films about women trying to make art / learning how to make space in their lives for their art alongside other responsibilities?
