I was waiting for this. Our display pipes are many years ahead of the industry & this is just 1 of that. From contrast to accessibility to color management many teams at Apple, including my display driver team, put so much effort to it. Glad to see it makes a difference.

Hope you folks love the new Mac Studio, the display and iPad Air and new iPhone. I am glad one more chip (M1 Ultra) of our M1 family is out now. 128GB memory at 800GB/secs enables entirely new workflows. I am looking forward to seeing what you can do with it.

A15 GPU tech talk is now available. The GPU has increased core count, increased f32 math rate per core, lossy renderable textures that saves memory storage & bandwidth, support for sparse depth & stencil textures and new SIMD shuffle & fill instructions.

I am glad to see the Liquid Retina XDR is finally out in public. A lot of people within Apple, including my team, worked tirelessly on it for a very long time. Our Display HW and SEG teams did an exceptional job in creating this technology. Congrats to all help make it possible.

It is amazing how well the semiconductor process technology has evolved. 12 years ago we shipped a 90 nm, custom built chip in the original iPhone. And shipped a 7nm chip a year ago. Great job by the scientists, engineers and companies behind these advances.

This is not just Metal-cpp examples but also cpp wrappers for MTKView and nswindow. You can now write an entire application with windowing & metalkit view in c++. It comes with a makefile. If you are so inclined you can use VScode. It also includes programmatic frame capture.

Fun fact for graphics people: There are many more successful Space Rocket Vendors (SpaceX, Northrop, Galactic Energy, CNSA, Arianespace, ISRO, i-Space, Kuaizhu, JAXA, Soyuz, etc) than there are GPU vendors (Apple, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, QCOM, ARM, IMG)

We shipped a new tool as part of our #MetalAPI Debug Layer. The tool prints out which draw/dispatch calls have accessed invalid memory. It reports the function name (when available), draw/dispatch ID and pipeline label. It’s enabled by setting METAL_DEVICE_WRAPPER_TYPE=4>

We had raytracing support in Metal Performance Shader. In order to support ray tracing inline your shaders and to support custom intersections shaders we are releasing Ray Tracing API that is built into Metal API.

I recently bought a plug-in hybrid. First fueling at 1940 miles. 82% of the miles were electric. Most of my trips are short. Seems like a good trade off between range anxiety of all electric vs less than 20% gas usage.

The new metal shader debugger is awesome. Being able to go back and forth in time, having all iterations of a loop visible to me at the same time, being able to debug a particular fragment/thread is such a great set of features. I wish something like that existed for the CPUs.

Tesla got $1.5 billion in taxpayer money, made $0.7 billion in profits. I am in favor of using public money as a policy tool; in this case reducing emissions which helps us all. But the hypocrisy of taking taxpayer money and then criticizing other public spending is disgraceful.

Some of the new things we are shipping this year with #MetalAPI (5): - MPS Ray Tracing BVH generation can be done on the GPU - MPS provides a denoiser for ray tracing - Metal memory debugger -iOS Simulator now supports Metal I am sure there are a bunch of other things I forgot.

I think this is a great point. Not to take away from it, but I think when you work too much for too long burnout still happens even if you get a return on emotional investment. Also as you put more into something the expectation for return gets larger.

I am no expert, but I think California should re-institute mask mandates. They are proven effective to reduce the spread of the disease. Only less than 60% of the CA population is vaccinated. Especially with delta variant that is not enough to keep the disease in check.

I will give Elon’s Twitter a chance. My stream is mostly about GFX and GPUs. If that remains the same and Tweetbot keeps working with clean interface I will stay. I am not sure why Twitter employees would stay at a privately owned company even if they don’t care who runs it.

This is a fascinating essay on mRDNA and the BionTech/Pfizer vaccine. The mechanisms are fascinating. But more than that how scientific discoveries along the way contributed to the success of the vaccine. Just shows best investment humanity can make is education and science.

Man goes biking, flips his bike, hits his head, gets knocked out and doesn't regain consciousness until sometime during the ambulance ride. Apple Watch detects the fall, autodials 911 with his location and EMS has him picked up and in the hospital in <30 minutes. Incredible.

NEW: CA is expanding eligibility for the #COVID19 vaccine. Beginning April 1, Californians 50+ will be able to sign up for an appointment. Beginning April 15, eligibility will be expanded to everyone 16 and older. The light at the end of the tunnel continues to get brighter.

My son and I took turns playing #HorizonForbiddenWest It is a great game with great story, rendering, world building, and interesting side stories. I liked the combat more as well. A great successor to Zero Dawn. I am so sad that we finished it. Really wanted to play more.
