Thanks so much for all your overwhelming love and appreciation for my
#FinalTomRobinsonShow
. It's time to revisit this clip from happier days - when we used to do live radio shows in a radio studio
RIP Homosapien Pete Shelley - one of the loveliest spirits to emerge from the UK punk era. A true original with a wicked way with words and a big, big heart.
45 years ago today RAR & the ANL staged their Carnival Against The Nazis. Misty In Roots led the march on a truck. On stage: Patrik Fitzgerald, X-Ray Spex, The Clash, TRB & Steel Pulse. The Clash weren't on the poster as Bernie Rhodes refused to confirm until very last minute...
Am devastated to announce that my dear friend & former guitarist Danny Kustow died at Bath Royal United Hospital on Monday. He'd been in a coma on life support all weekend with double pneumonia and a liver infection. I'm making a formal announcement on

THE BACKBONE OF BBC INTRODUCING... If you've appreciated our network of local BBC Introducing shows across England & The Channel Islands over the past 15 years, here's a chance to say so (Wales, Scotland & N.I. also have their own regional flagship shows!)
So this happened. My much needed knee repair (to fix a lateral meniscal derangement it turns out) finally happened this morning. By early afternoon the physio had me up on crutches limping along the corridor. All went well, but extremely glad nobody took pictures of that (
#afaik
)
A TREAT IN STORE on
@BBC6Music
is tonight's featured album PREFAB SPROUT: STEVE McQUEEN (1985)... I'll be playing the first 5 tracks on Side One (in full, back to back without interruption) just after 11pm....
Met Marc Bolan at EMI's offices in 1977 3 weeks before he died. Eric Hall on phone to Russell Harty: "I’ve got Marc here & this gay punk rock group called Tom Robinson. Bolan: "Is that what you are, a gay punk rock group?" & suddenly kissed me full on lips to test if it was true.
And Twitter Chums, please consider this fair warning (if you haven't guessed already) of what's coming up at six minutes to midnight on
@BBC6Music
tonight...
BAND & ARTISTS! Mid-December is a terrible time to start promoting new tunes to blogs, radio etc. Programme teams are up to their ears in Xmas specials, prerecording end-of-year "best-of" shows & preparing for their hols. Do yourselves a favour & hold back till 2nd week in Jan!
ELTON JOHN has just called for the BBC to review its planned cuts to
@BBCIntroducing
. See his posts on Instagram and Facebook . If you agree with him see for the most effective ways you can share your views.
You can share your views with BBC management here: and with BBC Radio 4's on-air 'Feedback' programme here: . And if your local show is being axed or merged you can tell your MP how this will affect you here:
I can’t recommend Bandcamp highly enough for DIY artists. It means fans can hear can hear their whole catalogue, buy & download in lossless quality, and (unlike iTunes) most of the money goes to the creator. For me at least, it’s been a godsend:
@freshnet
Sharing an artists music is key to them being heard and noticed. Buy their music, share their links and create circles within the scene. The bigger the circle, the bigger the listening audience. Artists also need to promote themselves as much as they can too. Keep plugging👍
Flashback to 2010 when BBC boss Mark Thompson & head of radio Tim Davie did their level best to shut down
@bbc6music
. It was such a spectacular own-goal that our audience doubled & many suspected a clever ploy by management. Trust us on this: Tim & Thommo weren't THAT clever...
Well I'm 70, the oldest artist we've played to date was 85 and the youngest was 11. FWIW we get 200-300 songs a week and 60 mins of airtime. So if what comes out of the speakers sounds more interesting than the other 95% that week, it goes in the show, regardless of age.
There's been a few for sure. But maybe all the great artists we've played on the show who *didn't* go on to any kind of fame, celebrity and fortune are more important? I'm proud that our airplay gave them them encouragement to *carry on* making great music. The tune's the thing!
BBC INTRODUCING CUTBACKS start in August. Our network of 32 local shows across England & The Channel Islands will be cut bck to 20. See for full info on which shows are merging
TOM ROBINSON BAND - Grey Cortina
After constantly getting overtaken in my Morris Minor van by boy racers on the Seven Sisters Road my ambition became to own Mk II 1600E smoke-grey silver fox furlined four door Ford Cortina. Writing the song earned me enough money to buy one
I don’t know about you but around this time in the morning during an unprecedented global health crisis I like to watch a video of Anthony Hopkins playing the piano to his cat.

Shock and grief backstage at
@cavernliverpool
last night at news of the sudden death of

clip in their last tweet.
Rumour has it that in the morning hours in Austin; two dudes can be seen floating around the Ladybird Lake on barge, and if you keep very still a little tune might float your way 🛥👻👻 Thanks to the
@bbcintroducing
gang for capturing this~ !
DANNY KUSTOW. Awful news: Danny's brother has told me he is in intensive care battling a liver infection and double pneumonia. I hope you'll join me in sending warmest thoughts and prayers that Danny will pull through tonight. Bless you Dan - with all love x

this week, Twitter chums: Am currently sitting in for Steve Lamacq from 4-7pm between Christmas and New Year...
CAN YOU HELP Twitter chums? Several thousand unwanted CDs use are cluttering up my South London home. Some are promos, many actual albums. Some well known, some obscure. Does anyone know of a service that’ll show up in a van & take absolutely everything away, preferably for free?
AAAAAGH Just forgot Archdrude
@JulianHCope
's name live on the radio
@BBC6Music
- oh the shame of it. The last 50 years of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll have finally caught up with me
This goes out to the 6 Music news team. Hard as it's been listening to the grim grim news over the last year, it's been SO much harder reading it out on air
Absolutely. For a career in music the only goals that matter are 1) making exceptional work and 2) building a paying fanbase for it. Everything else is secondary - radio, reviews, festivals, record deals etc are only parts in the process. They won't actually pay your bills.
So why not spend some time checking out the underground scene. Submit your tracks to us directly at , find some other cool podcasts. Engage with that scene. And then focus your efforts on building a fan base who support what you do and will support you. 6/7
BANDS! ARTISTS! Pundits bang on at us about the benefit of "engagement" on social media but here's a good example:
@AlfieIndra
was one of 17 acts on my
@bbcintroducing
mixtape last w/e. 8 of em tweeted back warmly about it, 8 didn't bother. But only Alfie thought of doing this...
PLEASE HOLD OFF sending me your new tunes till Jan 11, Twitter chums: there are no radio slots left now where I can play em this year. Currently prerecording end of year roundups & guest curated shows to cover the holiday break. Then after Xmas we’re having a couple of weeks off!
Hey Craig
@CCfunkandsoul
- remember snapping this together back in 2009? Looking forward to picking up the baton from you at 9pm to look back on our 16 years at
@BBC6Music
since we first launched on 11th March 2002. Here’s to the next 16 funky souly years on air :-)
NEXT MON (31 Oct) I'll be sitting in for
@GidCoe
on
@BBC6Music
from 9pm. Obviously I'll aim to play Siouxsie & The Banshees (& Lou Reed!) if no other DJs get there first. But what other Halloween-appropriate tracks would you suggest, Twitter chums?
WELL THIS IS NICE! For this coming weekend I'm standing down from

to mark the eve of my 70th birthday & wear my other hat as a recording artist. Plenty of scope (1st album w/Café Society in 1975 to Only The Now with

What song should we play to celebrate Tom Robinson's (

Fantastic start to tonight's final as both teams

before kick-off despite relentless efforts to undermine anti-racism and spread division throughout the tournament.
The forced cancellation of tonight's vigil for Sarah Everard through lack of support from the police and judiciary is a f*cking outrage, given the occupation of her suspected murderer. If you agree please follow
@ReclaimTS
and support their fundraising campaign...
Update: We are sorry to confirm that our Clapham vigil scheduled for tonight is cancelled. Please see the full statement here.
Instead, we are fundraising £320,000 for women's causes: £10K for every proposed fine for the 32 vigils originally scheduled.
UPDATE: tonight from midnight you can hear all four episodes of THE UPSETTER (Lee 'Scratch' Perry in His Own Words): the legendary producer and performer telling the story of his life through the music he made, enjoyed and was influenced by.

DANNY KUSTOW UPDATE: Danny has made it through the night. He's still critically ill and in intensive care, but stable. My wife and I are just off to visit him this morning. You can hear his most recent recorded performance at The 100 Club in 2017 at
