I swear voting in California as a native Texan is so weird to me. I get to vote by mail AND I get a booklet with info on what each thing on my ballot means AND a booklet on how to fill out my ballot?!!
I’ve never been more angry at Texas in my life. Wtf.
At Least 42 People Found Dead Inside Truck Carrying Migrants In Texas.
These deaths are on Biden.
They are a result of his deadly open border policies.
They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.
Newsroom trainings, check ins, therapy dogs and pizza parties are great. But sometimes what journalists need more than anything, especially after covering a catastrophic event, is more money and time off.
The last mass shooting at a Texas school happened four years and six days ago, when 10 students were killed at Santa Fe High School, near Houston.
A few weeks later, on a trip to Dallas, Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled a 40-page list of recommendations on how to keep schools safer.
When we talk about “objectivity” in journalism, remember who set the rules in the industry: White men.
Fairness is different from objectivity. POC can cover POC issues while being fair. Just like white men can cover other white men.
✨ personal news ✨ I HAVE A JOB!!!!
I had to keep this hush for a bit, but I’m the new Audience Engagement Editor for
@thehill
. Please follow us!
You’ll now see me post and re-post a lot of politics and policy news (along with my regular memes, ofc.) 😎🤙
✨personal news, y’all. ✨
I’m leaving Dallas and
@dallasnews
. In fact, today is my last day at the DMN.
I’m heading south to Austin to join the
@TexasTribune
next week as their new engagement producer!
I'll say it: journalism is kinda an elitist career that puts low-income students at a disadvantage. This is why we have such a diversity problem within our staff members and within our coverage. It's getting better, but it's not anywhere near where it needs to be.
call me old fashioned, but i was raised to take care of my husband
make his plate every night, wash his work clothes for him, make sure he’s up for work the next morning, always have a clean house for him to come home to, etc.
and that’s exactly wife i will be
📢 📢 Today is my first day at
@latimes
as a multiplatform editor on the newsletters team. I'm so excited! I'm in Austin, but I will eventually be moving to LA. (Send me your LA recs on where to live, eat, etc.)
📰 Anyway, subscribe to their newsletters!
I'm so fucking proud of my work. I worked with the best of the best.
I have no regrets about moving to Los Angeles — a city that truly welcomed me with open arms when I moved here from Texas. I don't regret walking out on Friday. I regret nothing.
Also, my manager had to call me to let me know because I was locked out of my email and Slack before I got my notice.
Apparently, I was supposed to get a notice from HR BUT HOW THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN WHEN I'M LOCKED OUT?!! LMFAOOOOOO
@aarickawash
omg I love reading this because I also don't know how to swim & I always feel guilty when I hang out with friends. Even with a life jacket, I am always just so scared!
Anyway, if y'all have any job leads for this girly pop lmk! I know all about newsletters, social media, news writing (or any writing tbh) and more!
Here's my LinkedIn and fresh for u:
Speaking of internships ... PAID INTERNSHIPS still have a long way to go when it comes to recruitment.
Low-income students are screwed with unpaid internships but also with paid ones where they only scout "top-tier" schools. There are brilliant minds at state schools, too.
Growing up, did anyone else think Chili’s was fancy? Or was my family just that poor?
In Dallas, we only went to the Casa Linda Chili’s for special occasions. I literally went there after my high school graduation. And you know what? No regrets.
Who needs kids when you’ve got boomer parents during a pandemic? 👀 Close enough.
“No, [insert parent]. That’s a conspiracy theory ...”
“I don’t care, what everyone else is doing. You’re not hanging out with your friends ...”
✨Bittersweet fact✨ I am leaving
@TexasTribune
after 2+ years. My last day is Nov. 15. (More TK soon on what I'm doing next 👀)
I've learned so much here & I'll always be a TT cheerleader. PLEASE support their amazing journalism by becoming a member.
My proudest moment of 2020 was going on a date with a guy in January who told me I’d be prettier if I lost weight ...
... then me making him cry at the end of our date. 💅🏻😘 And I got a burger out of it, too.
I still think about that from time to time and smile.
‼️FYI!!! If you’re gonna call out The Dallas Morning News, specifically tag the editor in chief and the publisher.
The people who check the DMN’s Twitter account are just journalists on the audience team who are trying to do their job.
✨personal news✨I'm helping launch this

's newsletter, Kiosco Digital. The first one is expected to go out in mid-July. If you want to read the latest SoCal happenings in Spanish then subscribe below.
Reminder: Loop in your social/audience/newsletter teams EARLY in the reporting process. If we know about a story days/weeks before it publishes, we can work on a promotion plan. But if you tell us hours before it goes live then your story is 1 of dozens of things we are juggling.
Mom: My friend told me journalists are fake, and I told her she probably just doesn’t like facts because the truth hurts. I got her to change her mind.
My mom is changing minds en la vecindad, one comadre at a time. 😎
Went on my daily little sad girl hike. I’m going to say this over and over and over – sorry for sounding like a broken record – but this city is just so beautiful.
Nearly 900 inmates have tested positive at the Federal Correctional Institution in Seagoville, two weeks after the prison announced an initiative for mass testing.
Y’all want me back in the newsroom for what? So you can call me by another Latina journalist’s name? Cause that’s what happened when I used to go into a newsroom every single day. lmao
There's a reason so many Black journalists/JOC prefer remote work. Not dealing with the antics, microaggressions & racism tops the list. So, yes, many find it odd to see folks pining for an era of journalism that was incredibly harmful to so many of us.
@TraumaRNSA
Poll workers were always helpful to me, too. But finding out what each measure meant required a bit more homework. Shout to all of the local newsrooms for having election guides every year. Those were always helpful.

Remember: Not everyone is comfortable sharing their trauma at work so those “therapy” and training sessions won’t do those journalists any good. Most of the time it’s those are also JOC who are afraid of retribution later on if they share too many personal details at work.
I hate being sappy online, but I'm truly loving life. I really sat down today and took it all in. I love living in L.A. I have an amazing support system and wonderful mentors. I love my career and I'm excited about my future. I'm so damn proud of myself. 🥹
Massive and heartless layoffs not only affect current JOC, they affect an organization’s potential to attract talented JOC in the future.
We’re a small group and we all talk. We all warn each other of poorly managed and dysfunctional news orgs.
The eclipse was such a cool experience. You could feel it in the air — literally. It got a few degrees cooler during totality. It was totally worth the drive from L.A. 🌖✨
(Luckily, my parents still live in Dallas, so I didn’t have to worry about lodging.)
First generation trauma is an emerging term in the Latino community, with people talking about it on social media. Here’s how it affects children of immigrant parents.
It's been 7 years since I screenshot a text from a guy I had previously dated, accidentally sent it to him instead of my friend, panicked and then sent him the first image I saw on my desktop (Vienna sausages) before blocking him.
It’s official: I’ve been in Los Angeles for 2 years.
It somehow feels like a lifetime and 6 months all at once. I absolutely love this place, and I’m grateful to have landed here.
Eight years ago, I was at my lowest. I had just gotten laid off and I had no idea what I was going to do next. I felt like a failure and I was going broke. (Facebook memories reminded me of this today)
I'm glad I'm still here.
My parents finally have power after several hours of not having it. I called them a few mins ago. I was worried & my mom says, "Somos de rancho. no te preocupes. sabemos sobrevivir."
My dad has a hand crank radio & they were listening to tunes before the power came on.
Growing up poor was wild bc renting a movie from Blockbuster and dining at Chili's were considered fancy things that I'd get to do once a year for my birthday.
toxic masculinity is being upset over Harry Styles wearing a dress and being ok with wearing a toga to a frat party or a kilt to your wedding.

I invested in a $100 pillow, and it was the best decision I’ve made this year. Wu-Tang Clan once told me as a kid to protect ma neck, and that is what I’ve done with this expensive anti-allergen, 750 thread pillow.
