newest doctor on the block!
Only just discovered a old medical drama called House and I'm as addicted as I was for Grey's 😱counting this as productive preparation for entering clinical years (Y3) :)
Mad to think it started when I was 4 years old lol no wonder I hadn't heard of it😂
#MedTwitter
Is it just me who is still not ready to not wear masks in hospital? All I've ever known from starting clinical years during COVID was masks, feels bare without it in the hospital but feel like being judged still using them!

Question for
#womeninsurgery
how do you manage periods in theatre?
Got through this morning's cases observing
w/o painkillers but got me thinking for future how do you cope if cramps hit whilst you're operating/assisting? Feels awkward to talk about in front of male surgeons 😭
I can't believe I really did it! Offered my first choice SFP offer for East Midlands. I cannot wait to pursue my medical education passion in my career and be closer to home😃sad to be officially leaving Cardiff though!
I've had 4th year med students shadowing my nights. I understand final year but 4th year leave them alone let them sleep 😭I know the meded side of me thinks useful learning opportunities out of hours but I think it should be optional unless it's like obgyn. Thoughts?
#MedTwitter
Why is it the 3 words "are you okay" that sets you off when you're not 😥
8 days to go until finals and having major imposter syndrome the stress is overwhelming , never felt this stressed out before 😭
Any encouragement is much welcome 😭😭
Decided to rock my natural hair out for speaking at an event tonight. I'm tired of having to pin up my hair to look "professional" - this is a look too 🤷🏾♀️
#blackhairlove
In the midst of this free/ charged medicine prep resources conversation, lest we forget that UCAT costs £75, BMAT £49 for UK students?
Sad that first step of journey into medicine involves money which other subjects don't have to face
Just a thought 🤷🏾♀️
Opinions?
#MedTwitter
It's the footnote for me 😂😂😂
"Did you know even if you qualify for the maximum possible loan... It might not cover all your living costs"
No way?? Still a shock how much finance drops because of NHS bursary, it's sad my summer work is to make sure I have a roof over my head
I doubled back when I saw this and had to go back to bmj source to check the context before commenting. This is absolutely unacceptable to use this analogy and makes me very uncomfortable to use Windrush to outline this point. I would urge
@bmj_latest
to remove this response /1
This is one of the most offensive things I’ve read in a while, I can’t believe
@bmj_latest
published it. Windrush isn’t something you can throw into an argument slapdash for points, it resulted in deportations, families ripped apart and generational trauma. Christ.
why don't SHOs rotate before F1s? I get it in terms of team flow BUT how can we escalate for help from people who don't have their IT access sorted before us or don't know the patients before us? Just doesn't seem effective at all
from a very tired F1 😭😭LONG DAY
It's so important that I share the ups and downs in life and this one I am so so gutted. It was my absolute dream to intercalate in meded but sometimes life doesn't work out and I'll focus on getting through med school!
Sorry I think you may have misread my tweet with regards to women who have periods, not men with prostates. Please start a separate tweet thread thank you, I hope you receive guidance that you need without the need for comparison
Delighted to have completed my 1st F1 rotation in general surgery which I'm pleased to say hasn't put me off my plans for a career in surgery! Onto geriatrics next!
You can read my further reflections on LinkedIn!
I recently did 2 night shifts in a row to see what it was like and understand what is expected of an F1. It was so weird adjusting my sleeping pattern but really glad I tried it so it's not a complete shock when I start! Any more tips for sleep hygiene for nights?

It feels pretty special for me as a Christian in Healthcare that

falls on Easter weekend this year - a special bank hol to celebrate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. I love being a 🩺 and my faith has carried me through the hard times!🙏🏾
Can't believe halfway through day 2 of

Might be an unpopular opinion but not only am I concerned for wellbeing of medical students but also for staff of medical schools too. I imagine they're working around the clock to get preparations in. Thank god we had a Xmas break this semester will be hectic for all of us
Sorry are there any other incoming F1s in the same position as me who:
➡️ do not have details for their induction week
➡️ have still not received their contract
➡️ have not heard back from rota coordinators about approval of annual leave?
making me so anxious 😭😭
#medtwitter
Finals? Completed it!!! Feels so surreal
So impressed by the hard work of the staff for organisation and doctors volunteering their time to examine us, it does not go unnoticed l
Tonight's sleep will be so bliss!! Booked my train home- can't wait for relaxation with my family
Why is it the 3 words "are you okay" that sets you off when you're not 😥
8 days to go until finals and having major imposter syndrome the stress is overwhelming , never felt this stressed out before 😭
Any encouragement is much welcome 😭😭
I was trying so hard to be patient to find out which confirmed cohort I'll be in before announcing this exciting news, but the excitement has got the better of me!! 😁😁Can't believe I'm going to be an incoming
@HLA_int
scholar - thank you to those who encouraged me to apply :)
maybe an unpopular opinion but I enjoyed

, bingewatched in 2 viewings
➡️I understand why people disagree with character portrayals/ interactions,
but (unfortunately) seemed so realistic, even down to the sarky humour and sad but emphatic ending, would recommend
I'm loving how much my confidence has grown in F1 - I'm developing strong gut instincts, I don't shy away from difficult conversations and recently received multiple (+) feedback in the way I've supported families in end of life care. It is really motivating 🥺🙏🏽
In other news I passed the PSA 🎉🎉the way I couldn't sleep last night thinking about it because it was one of the worse exams I've done, so so happy nearly a doctor 😭
Beyond proud to see offers esp in the black surgical network - 3 of which being neurosurgery 👏🏾so inspirational to see people who look like you excelling, community is everything and is an honour to celebrate the next generation of black surgeons 🥳 hope to join them soon!
Feels surreal to finally share my first publication - short communication article describing an approach to support transition of Year 1 medical students during COVID! Very thankful to
@CardiffUniLib
for approving this as open access!
#medtwitter
#meded
Without naming any specific conferences... It's very off putting if you want to try submitting an abstract when it costs >£65 for a student to even attend
I understand there may be some costs to cover but are we really doing enough to widen access?
#wideningaccess
#MedTwitter
Still don't get how some med schools have finals AFTER their FY allocations - surely the disparities in how EPM scores are calculated would make a difference?
Although NERVOUS, I'm thankful to do finals in Y4 at Cardiff, less pressure in Y5!
#medtwitter
Working as a bank phlebotomist has improved my confidence but some of the patients 😬...
Today patient asked where I'm from➡️ stoke, he said parents? ➡️ UK, grandparents➡️ 🇯🇲
He follows I had someone else take my blood from 🇯🇲 but her hair wasn't as nappy as yours????????
Before I pop the mask on, all smiles round I'm officially older than 2 decades 😱blessed to come the 21 milestone!
Also an honour to share my birthday with Rosa Parks - “Each person must live their life as a model for others.” <-- striving for for this always!
Lovely surprise to have received this nomination this morning! It's a privilege to be recognised for some progress that I've been a part of and there will always be more improvements - reflection from today= "pace the work - an anti racist University is a marathon not a sprint!'

to get my head screwed on for long week of intro lectures before placement, just wanted to share another highlight of my day- finishing accessorising my first pair of scrubs (Yes the trainers go on my feet) but wanted to subtly show the match😍
I'm in two minds about some of the medical memes from Oprah interview - I get it's a joke BUT can you also acknowledge the racism elicited from it, the concerning mental health and suicidal thoughts. Sometimes humour is used as a mask to not share personal views- just my view 🤷🏾♀️
1st week ✅️ proud of my 1st time talking to micro today to discuss bld culture results was so nervous 🤣 done some discharge letters, a few bloods and starting to get my head around the system and the maze of the hospital. Pretty impressed by the mess bimonthly dominoes 😍
Still can't believe my 1st pay check is the same amount as my nhs bursary + student finance combined for the whole year in final year 🤣make it make sense
At least these f1 tears are being sponsored 😭
Made it through a long but exciting week of back to back twilight shifts most days finishing 1am! Finally seen some births 👶🏾
✔️ Vaginal delivery
✔️ Emergency C-section +tubal ligation
✔️ Kiwi delivery
Obgyn is quite fun though some aspects I've found very tough and emotional
Paeds people I need your heel pricks and cannulating babies tips plsss
To use or not to use vaseline for heel pricks?
Keep on parent's lap or lie flat on bed?
Anything and also any general advice for paeds for F1 thank youuu

My parents are the cutest when I'm on nights whenever they randomly wake up in the night they text me keep on going to motivate me 😭it's been hard being on Xmas nights really missing the family but very grateful to be able to make a difference where I can, 2 down 2 to go!

over and out! So impressed by the organisation and grateful for the opportunity for my 1st oral presentation 🥰 definitely will be an annual date in my diary. Til next time!
It's so nice to feel part of a team, nurse told me I'm the first med student to go out their way to introduce themselves to everyone including the HCSW.
It's the little courteous things that make a difference, they always make sure there's a free computer for my data collection
Anyone else feel guilty they're not tuning into all the amazing webinars available over this period? Need to get my head screwed on I'm enjoying TV time and baking too much😭

So excited!
#MedTwitter
just thought I'd share this - not sure if it's the case at other universities but 🏴👩🏾⚕️ can access LinkedIn learning with uni email - courses are fantastic it was useful for data analysis of my ssc to recap excel/pivot tables, formulas - concise, quick to go through!
First day of year 4 ✔️can't lie the intro talks panicked me feeling a bit overwhelmed 😭 going to take one step at a time
But I really enjoyed the intros to history taking on obstetrics + child health, can't wait for placement now 😍
It's been a great honour this evening to open my inbox to six emails of C4ME recognitions - e.g below! I'm proud to study at Cardiff and be able to use opportunities with others to make a difference. It has made my day and a great early birthday gift (I turn 21 tomorrow! 🙌🏾😊)

any cannula technique tips to get slicker?
Using this last placement to practice lots for F1- went hunting for opportunities today and did 3 successfully 😁but I'm finding that I'm very slow particularly when I have the 2nd flashback I'm scared to lose access!
Are you really part of a society if you don't get a personalised hoodie? Celebrating my 1 year term coming to an end leading

It's been amazing to see the impact of our committee's work and the increase in the community supporting us!
Just presented my SSC at our local ENT audit meeting for the first time! Apart from the last minute sweaty palms it went well and a potential publication opportunitiy 🙌🏾😁
I was wondering if anyone had good resources for using reporting checklists quite new to me 🙈

Did my first ever venepuncture on a patient today with a butterfly needle and it went really smoothly! (compared to those fiddly plastic arms 😂) felt more confident having done my first cannula a few weeks ago too :) Really enjoyed acute medicine can't wait 4 wks of A&E next!
Last scrub selfie of my oncology & surgery placement! Been a great 8 weeks away and fantastic end watching lobectomies today in Liverpool and being able to touch a real lung lobe with a tumour in it😱
2nd vaccine tomorrow and packing and then back home to Cardiff :)
Can't believe it was the last time today sitting in a lecture theatre as a medical student. These 5 years have gone in a blink. Thank you so much for building us up to be the next batch of junior doctors (the spiral curriculum really did work!)

what are your thoughts on turning cameras on or off during tutorials/small group sessions?
Personally I feel very bad for staff speaking to a black screen and if you were in person you wouldn't have a hood over your head 🤷🏾♀️just a thought let me know if you disagree!
Massive confidence boost yesterday getting positive feedback from my consultant on my efficiency during post take 😁and affirming my plans to do surgery💪🏽gen surg has been a whirlwind but I've developed so much and enjoyed it overall even though stressful at times!

In Year 3 at Cardiff we don't get a scheduled Easter break so having the bank holiday is better than nothing tell me why some people decide to think scheduling emails/messages for 7.30am on Easter Monday is okay?
Students deserve a break too just think it's a bit distasteful 😭
Had a great time

My last gen surg day shift today 🥺time has gone so quickly can't believe nearly finished 1st rotation of f1! Just a set of nights to finish! Going to miss my ward nurses so much 😭have had some really good feedback on my 1st PSG ❤️
It's been great having medstudents with us on paeds day case. Really encouraging hearing they've told friends how much they've enjoyed it and we've had extra students coming to see if they can get a bit of experience in their free time I really do love teaching 🥺
Feels weird going from uni email that I've had for 5 years to a new one for SFP. Feels scarily official 😁looking forward to academic training days!
Q to current/ prev SFP doctors🩺 how did you get the leave to attend mandatory days? Can you get study leave in f1?
#MedTwitter
For the first time wearing my natural hair at work I've received so many compliments of how it suits me no one trying to touch my hair uninvited and respectful questions around how i change my hair frequently with braids was very refreshing 💪🏽
Yano what I find scary is how people act very differently to you when they know you're a medical student?
Today was just assumed to be the sister of woman in need of help because she was black, once I was able to assist with the history for the ambulance, people were "impressed"
This email cheered me up after a long day at placement - Thank you! can't wait to work as Cardiff Medical School lead with
