🔥 Folks—there's a new paper in town, and I'd love to tell you about it. In the paper I wrote with @JkayFlake & Don Robinaugh, we take a bird's eye view on depression measurement. History, present, future. In particular, we discuss shaky theoretical & methodological foundations🧵

My students invented Eiko bootstrapping: you ask the PI the same question a few times, 4-8 weeks apart, and he'll have forgotten he was asked the question before. If he gives the same answer multiple times, we'll call it a robust and reliable outcome.

#MachineLearning models in mental health science "routinely achieve perfect performance [even in] large international multisite clinical trial [..] However, when that exact model was tested in truly independent clinical trials, performance fell to chance levels."

Magic mushrooms "liberate the entrenched depressed brain". The language of neuroimaging papers has become indistinguishable from homeopathy ads. Also, I absolutely love that Nature now publishes clinical trials without any info on sample size or effect size in abstract.

Just out in @NatureMedicine . Psilocybin therapy liberates the entrenched depressed brain by increasing the global integration of functional networks. It has been brilliant to collaborate w/ @RCarhartHarris @ProfDavidNutt et al.

5/ Further, parts of the rebuttal reads like "how dare you criticize us—look at our h-index". If you use such arguments to try to convince fellow scientists about the merits of arguments in a debate, it is nothing short of admitting to having lost the argument.

Just finished my keynote at @conference_2021 on "Mental health: studying systems instead of syndromes". You can find slides & new preprint here: . Really enjoyed making a completely new presentation from scratch. 🧵

People say statistical modeling is boring but let me tell you #rstats just told me as part of model output that I am “on dangerous grounds” and I’ve never felt more alive.

In case you missed this: meta-analytic website with data of hundreds of clinical trials where you can conduct your own meta-analysis within a minute. A really remarkable tool of open scholarship.

Did you know of this meta-analytic website by @pimcuijpers et al. featuring hundreds of RCTs? In the video I'll show researchers (part I) and clients (part II) how to run a systematic meta-analysis looking into the effect of CBT on depression in older adults within 1 minute.

Beautiful quote by the late Scott Lilienfeld on confusing biological mediation with biological etiology. Paying attention to this difference may resolve some apparent contradictions in views on mental health problems as "brain disorders".

In this new blog, I write about: 1. All that's wrong in academia—including bad papers, broken peer-review, the publishing industry, and precarious contracts. 2. How important it is *not* to become a cynic. 3. And my personal antidotes to cynicism creep.
