New preprint! We (
@DrDBWatson
, Andrew Heath, Kenny Sher, & I) took a closer look at alcohol use disorder's *symptom-level* interface with externalizing and internalizing psychopathology. We found that symptoms have different relations with them! A quick summary:
Now that it’s official, I’m so very excited to say that I’ll be heading to
@VanderbiltU
to start my DREAM job as an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the summer of 2023!!!
In grad school, I had a running Word doc of my advisor's writing pet peeves that I'd check before sending him a manuscript draft. I'm thinking of starting one that details my personal pet peeves to share with members of my lab. What are your writing pet peeves?
Today I received the notice of award for my
@NIAAAnews
K99/R00!!! (🤯x100!) I'm so grateful and excited to continue my work on phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity in alcohol use disorder, & to keep learning from my mentors, collaborators, and friends
@MizzouPsych
and elsewhere.
Website's barebones but it's official. I'll be recruiting my ☀️first☀️ PhD student(s) this fall!!! Please send your trainees interested in addiction and comorbidity my way! (Will also be recruiting postdoc, lab manager, etc., next spring) DMs are open!
Another day, another (two) manuscript reviews where I ask the authors to produce more modern displays of interaction effects. If you haven't seen this great paper and Shiny app by
@connorjmccabe
, Dale Kim, and
@KMKing_Psych
, I HIGHLY recommend it!
Re: the Barlow-related twitter harassment. A response from the chair at BU is below. Powerful people will protect powerful people, and will offer weird "advice" as a way to intimidate others. (Note that I never accused anyone of a FERPA violation.)
After waiting for what felt like 1.4 billion years, I just received the NOA for my R00! If you're interested in alcohol use disorder heterogeneity and comorbidity, I'm hoping to fund postbacs and/or postdocs through Diversity Supplements and the grant itself. Get in touch!
My teeny tiny lab at Vanderbilt is growing! I'm hoping to recruit 1-2 postdocs to work on addiction heterogeneity this coming academic year. Please reach out if interested!! RTs appreciated 🙏
Lovers & haters of factor analysis: I’ve been asked to write a special issue paper on issues in FA. I’d love to write a comprehensive & critical review. What gripes do you have with FA, incl how it's used or (mis)interpreted? Thoughts & RTs appreciated!😊
Hey, can we make a pact to stop pretending that all it takes to get an R01 is a little hard work and “humility”? There is little humility involved in pitching a funded R01, and that’s fine (?), but it’s naive and invalidating to argue that all successes are simply earned.
If you knew Scott, you know how frequently he’d start a story with “Paul Meehl, the smartest psychologist I ever knew…” I think I’ll inherit that tendency, except mine will go: “Scott Lilienfeld, the smartest psychologist I ever knew…” We have lost one of our very best.
It is with great sadness that I share the news that Scott Lilienfeld passed away last night. His wife Candice asked that I share the news with his professional community. The field has lost a giant, & more importantly, for many, a kind & thoughtful friend. My heart is heavy.
Trainees and clinical practitioners will now have the option of going on video and mic during the annual HiTOP meeting. YAY! I am grateful
@HiTOP_system
listened and I appreciate the people who stepped up to make it happen.
This is difficult to post but I’m still reeling. A quick thread: Earlier, I posted that
@HiTOP_System
elected to block trainees (& interested clinical practitioners) from going on video or mic during our upcoming annual meeting.

Allowing trainees to attend a virtual conference but banning them from going on video or using their mic: What do we think, friends? I'll start: gross and unnecessarily hierarchical. 🙃
I’m excited to share a forthcoming paper we’ve (
@ashlgreene
,
@wesbonifay
,
@EikoFried
) had cooking for quite some time: A critical evaluation of the p-factor literature. Have a look if you're curious to hear our thoughts!
This paper has been accepted at the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and I'm really excited! I didn't update the thread after the first round of revisions, so here goes:
I’m not annoyed about the PNAS article because *I* wasn’t interviewed. Over time, people have remarked that I get “emotional” about the p-factor and its researchers, that I have some vendetta, etc. Some interactions today reminded me of those comments. My thoughts:
I'm really proud to have contributed to a small but mighty revision HiTOP. The Substance Abuse construct is now named Harmful Substance Use. Thanks to my partner in crime
@Cassie_Boness
!👭Feels good!!!

If you work with undergrads (esp underrepresented) interested in alcohol research, encourage them to apply to Mizzou's PAID (housing+meals+stipend) summer fellowship! I'm a faculty mentor for the program & would love to work with someone interested in alcohol use & comorbidity.
@kjstanton12
just received the Walter G. Klopfer Award for the best empirical paper published in the Journal of Personality Assessment in 2023! Check out his cool paper, which shows how focusing narrowly on model fit misleads us (link below). CONGRATS KASEY!!!
Coming soon to Psych Methods! Led by the amazing
@ashlgreene
, we propose a conceptual road map for evaluating factor structures, describe common challenges that arise in CFA & EFA, & suggest that EFA be used to diagnose critical CFA model misspecifications.
Hi, everyone! I've been lucky to recruit a postdoc and a postbac, but am still looking for a second postdoc and a lab manager. If you're interested in addiction heterogeneity, please reach out!!! RTs welcome, would love to hire some folks. 😊

Having a go at my first network analyses ever and, friends, it's going well!!!! (Before you ask, no, I did not forget to plot the edges. They do not exist.)
@Cassie_Boness
& I wrote a proposal to rename HiTOP's Substance Abuse construct to Harmful Substance Use. It's live: Before we submit to HiTOP, we're hoping to get comments from you all. Please feel free to comment on OSF, email, or DM. THANK YOU! (1/n)
We (Sean Lane,
@wes_bonifay
,
@DougSteinley
, & Francisco Meyer) wrote about theory, models, & the p-factor in response to
@EikoFried
! We argue that the p-factor literature is a microcosm of the theory-model inference gap Fried describes in his paper.
Let’s set aside the complex matter of cross-institution diffs wrt supported K award salaries. What I want people to know is that it’s okay to: (1) ask follow-up Qs regarding the WHYs related to your supported salary, (2) not take no for an answer the 1st time. Too many thoughts:
Third: It’s okay to care! I care deeply about people who experience psychopathology and it’s important to me to feel like we’re getting the science right. If you don’t feel the same, do the rest of us a favor and research literally anything else.
An Observation: The only people who have ever implied that it’s entitled to ask for compensation for my time and that I shouldn’t go into academia for the money are those who are way overpaid and force their advisees to do the tasks they’re paid to do.
Seeing lots of well-intentioned criticism of the POPS editorial process on the TL. White people, a reminder: It's okay to take a beat and not take up space in the conversation surrounding Dr. Roberts' experience of racism. Your annoying POPS experience is not equivalent to that.
(might delete subtweet later)
APS: Strict mask policy, 0 known COVID cases.
RSA: Minimal masking, + cases starting day 2. After learning of exposures (incl unmasked time), those people did NOT mask. Someone w a known dx ATTENDED THE FINAL BANQUET. 5 cases and counting...
I just asked myself why I've been so active in Twitter discussions the past couple of days, and then I remembered it's because I have several really important things due next week.
WANT TO BE MY COLLEAGUE?! IN AN AMAZING DEPARTMENT?! Vanderbilt's Clinical program is hiring again this year! Please RT and apply if you're interested! Link here:
@MDeBoltC
i've been at it for years and still spend 4-5 hours per review. it's totally unsustainable and i've yet to find a workaround! FWIW, if people tell you that it takes them 1 hour to read and write a review for a 20+ page paper, they probably aren't providing a quality review.
Anyone who feels enamored with factor analysis should read this important piece by Bill Revelle (the GOAT). TL;DR: You probably shouldn't feel so enamored with factor analysis.
What happened to me when I got involved in HiTOP was, at minimum, weird. I very much believe in what I study, but I don’t feel good about recruiting my friends & future trainees to the consortium if this culture of exclusivity continues.
@EikoFried
“Reduce the reader’s working memory burden” was the first thing I listed! I’m working on examples that fit under that umbrella (avoiding acronyms, not using “this” without a referent after it, avoiding multiple comma breaks in a sentence, etc.).
Get you a set of friends who are kinder to you than you are to yourself! My favorite thing about this field is that I get to develop friendships with exceptional people who inspire me to do and to be better.
@CoyneoftheRealm
The way you’re treating Miri is disgusting. You may disagree on the science but your antagonism is sexist and paternalistic. Please stop. You’re harassing an ECR based on beef you have with someone who didn’t even carry out the work in this paper. The assumptions here are wild.
@DrAndreaHoward
IMO the term "personal statement" misleads applicants. Many people approach the statement like they would for an UG application and that's not the task. If we framed it as a "research statement," students probably wouldn't feel pressured to come up with some personal narrative.
#SRP2022
! Hope you'll join us this morning at 10:15 for four talks on the theme of underexamined methodological challenges to understanding the structure of psychopathology! Fun talks planned by
@OlinoTom
@keanan_joyner
@cvize4
and me, with discussion by
@aidangcw
.
Including people with lived experience with AUD in our research by PAYING them to consult on our study design?! Yowza, how cool! Can't wait to see what comes of this important work,
@Cassie_Boness
!
so, hey, I'm hiring people with lived experience to serve as consultants on my K08 - full transparency, I'm starting locally in NM and will expand the search as needed

Would it be acceptable to criticize Environment on a NIH grant application from an institution in a Bad State because it hampers recruiting diverse trainees?
Congratulations! 2020 Gordis Research Recognition Award Post-Doc Finalist: ASHLEY WATTS, University of Missouri School of Medicine, St. Louis: SYMPTOM-LEVEL ANALYSIS OF GENETIC HETEROGENEITY WITHIN ALCOHOL USE DISORDER: DISTINCT SOURCES WITH DIFFERENTIABLE CORRELATES
This weekend, a neighbor stopped me to ask if my dog’s name is Friend. The question was confusing at first, but then he explained that he always hears me say “Come on, Friend” while I’m walking with my dog. I think I’ll be thinking about that conversation 10 years from now.
Mizzou's Addiction Research Group is looking for T32 postdocs! They're looking to fulfill multiple spots for the upcoming year. If you're on the postdoc market and are potentially interested, feel free to reach out. Happy to chat!

Things are going to vary across programs and advisors, so I wanted to share my experience. I've recruited 3 students so far and only 1 student had a publication (and only 1). I also recruited someone in their first cycle of apps, the other two were on their second.
Love the premise of this paper so (so) much but a large N won’t fix terrible phenotyping. This applies to neuroimaging as much as it does genetics, where it’s common to see single item assessments of complex traits (e.g., depression).
First genetics went from candidate gene studies (small N, “theory” driven, boutique phenotyping) to GWAS....
Now neuroscience?
@ndosenbach
et al: “small brain behavioral phenotype effect sizes + sampling variability” requires consortium sample sizes
First evidence of a general disease (“d”) factor, a common factor underlying physical and mental illness First the "p" factor of psychopathology, now the "d" factor.
I suspect a "b" factor exists - all self-reported bad variables are correlated.
Beginning to start renovations on my VU office and lab space. I have no idea what I’m doing! What features of your work offices and labs work best? Are there things you wish you’d asked about? Conversely, are there things you thought you’d love that you ended up not liking?
Second: Straight up, those reactions to my p-factor work are sexist. It's quite odd to watch men assert their opinions on scientific matters and be treated as inspired geniuses. When I do it? Some suggest I’m acting from a place of emotion. I'm over pretending it's not sexist.
APS is recognizing Scott Lilienfeld's influence on psychology through a graduate student travel award in his name! If you're able, please consider donating to the fund. This award will fund a promising clinical student's travel (hopefully several, really) to APS each year!
People interested in neurobiology & psychopathology: What form of psychopathology do you think is summarized in this review of relevant neurobiological processes (no cheating if you have seen the review, please)?
#APS2020
! Daniel Leising, Martin Bäckström,
@jroltmanns
, and I will be presenting various (competing) perspectives on general factors of personality & psychopathology. I'm reeeeeally excited! This one should be a lot of fun.
Everyone's posting their imposter syndrome quiz results. Some of the smartest, hardest working people I've ever met are scoring 80+. That so many of us may never feel good about our work and our accomplishments makes me feel deeply sad and disappointed in academia.
If you're applying to Psych PhD programs this year & want feedback on your personal statement, consider applying to this wonderful program! Priority does go to URM and limited access students. (& if you won't make the deadline but could use some feedback, my DMs are open.)
🚨ASFP submission portal is now OPEN!🚨
See for details on how to prepare & submit your statement. Portal will close on Fri, 10/8 @ 6pm PT/9pm ET.
