Today we had another deadly shooting in Maryland. Yesterday, there were shootings in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The number of people needlessly dying from gun violence is staggering. Prayers are not enough. Another day without action means more lives lost. This is unacceptable.
The Trump admin. is systematically locking up thousands of children at unheard of rates - now a staggering 12,800. My opponent dismisses this by saying “it’s not a simple issue.” I think it’s a very simple issue – detaining these children is reprehensible.
216 of the Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or children of immigrants. Deporting 800,000 of our country’s best and brightest will rob us of their future potential.
Actually
@amieformaryland
it’s a very simple issue. Ripping children from their parents‘ arms and putting them in cages is immoral and cruel, period, end of story. And anyone who refuses to condemn it unequivocally is complicit in allowing it to happen.
I want to thank Del. Parrott for his phone call this afternoon conceding the race. My promise to him, and to all of the people of the 6th District, is this: I’ll continue to work across the aisle to deliver results and get things done. Thank you, Maryland! Let’s get back to work.
President Obama is absolutely right. From running a business, I know how much the example I set impacts our culture. The way a President behaves shapes the culture for the entire country.
Spending money on a military parade while veterans go without necessities is just wrong. This parade is about Trump’s ego and doesn’t help our veterans. He needs to get his priorities straight.
In the midst of a national opioid epidemic, Trump is once again calling for the ONDCP's budget to be reduced by 95%. My 12-point plan calls for fully funding a national response to this crisis. If we don’t act, 1 million people will be dead in 10 years.
Holding these companies accountable is a major step in tackling this epidemic that killed 64,000 people last year, including my nephew. Thank you Ike Leggett and MoCo for taking action!
11 days after the mass shooting in Pittsburgh we see another horrible act of gun violence. As we keep the victims, their families, & first responders in our thoughts, we must turn to action. The time to pass sensible gun violence prevention reforms is now.
I built a multi-billion dollar business operating in 27 states. Take it from me: a $15 minimum wage is good for business, workers, and our economy. Anyone who says differently is lying to you.

Early voting in Maryland begins next week! Click below to find an early voting location near you and make a plan to go vote. It’s important to have your voice heard.
Trump and Pence's retrograde policies are a disaster for women in the U.S. and around the world. Everyone should have access to contraception and safe and legal abortion.
We want parents to be involved in their family’s lives, but not at the cost of an education. The Parents Lead program has a great program that fits into the lives of families.
Opioids killed 64,000 Americans in 2016. My nephew was one of them. Politicians have talked about the problem but have not acted. That’s why today I’m announcing my 12 Action Steps to Combat the Opioid Epidemic.
It’s disappointing that the President refuses to acknowledge pride month. It’s important to recognize that LGBTQ+ people have had to fight hard for, and are still fighting hard for, equal rights.
Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with parenting ability. And there are thousands of kids in foster care waiting to be adopted by a loving family. I hope that the Georgia House rejects this hateful legislation.
We banned the box on employments forms at my company because it’s the right thing to do. We've also found that returning citizens aresome of our best employees. Now I’m working with the
@ACLU
to encourage others to follow our lead.
Proud to be a part of the Penn Wharton Budget project, which just did an independent objective analysis of the Republican tax plan. They estimate that even with the most generous economic growth projections, it will increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion.
No child should have to know what a lockdown is let alone be well versed in participating in one. It’s long past time to enact common-sense gun safety laws.
I took out student loans to finance my education. But back then, people could afford to pay off their loans after graduation. Getting an education should not require students to take on insurmountable debt. We have to fix this broken system.
In these moments, people like
@chefjoseandres
give me hope. Time after time, when tragedy strikes, Chef Andres is there — literally — to nourish those in need. I'm proud to call him a fellow Marylander. Please, if you can, consider donating to

Despite Trump's repeated claims of "witch hunts", Mueller's investigation has uncovered extremely troubling illegal activity. The investigation must be allowed to continue without interference from the White House.
Trump’s family separation policies are disgraceful, cruel, and inhumane. He has the power to unilaterally end this, but instead, he’s building tent cities to hold more children.
Tens of thousands of ballots are still outstanding, and it may take a few days for every vote to be counted. But I'm confident that I'm headed back to Congress to keep fighting for the people of the 6th District.
An investigation into whether a foreign power meddled in our elections is not a “witch hunt”. Mueller must be allowed to continue his investigation unimpeded. Nobody is above the law.
It's the responsibility of elected leaders to leave the world a better place for the next generation. But since they're failing miserably to fulfill that responsibility, the next generation is taking matters into their own hands.
64,000 Americans died from opioids last year – my nephew Ian was one of them. I don’t want anyone to go through what my family did. That’s why I’m not standing on the sidelines.
Our country is facing an opioid epidemic that kills 115 people every day, and
@realDonaldTrump
has twice failed to submit the annual National Drug Control Strategy to Congress.
So much for "draining the swamp".
@realDonaldTrump
promised to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices but caved to pharmaceutical lobbyists who give more to pols than any other industry. This is why I'm not taking money from ANY lobbyists or PACs.
A great perspective from a distinguished retired law enforcement professional. Instead of wasting money on prisons, our crime prevention strategy should focus on ending racist mandatory minimum sentencing and investing in our communities.
I believe Dr. Blasey Ford. Her testimony was powerful, and her courage to come forward out of civic duty should be applauded. We must stand behind her.
My mother was a public school teacher, and I know how hard teachers work to make sure the next generation has the best opportunities. We need to do more to make sure teachers get the pay and respect they deserve.
#teacherappreciationweek
As of late last night, Congressman Trone has earned a majority of votes counted. Nearly all outstanding ballots in Allegany, Garrett and Washington Counties have been counted.
There's bipartisan support for common-sense gun safety reforms. The problem is too many politicians are bought and paid for by the NRA. That’s why I’m not taking any money from PACS or lobbyists. I don’t want to be their Congressman, I want to be yours.
I am running to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate because the clock is ticking to stop the opioid epidemic, fix the mental health crisis, and reform our broken justice system.
Join me, and let's fight for real change before it's too late:
Proud to earn the
@MomsDemand
Candidate distinction. In Congress, I will fight for reasonable gun safety legislation. And I won't be taking a dime from the NRA or any other PACs or lobbyists.
Women on average earn 80 cents for every dollar men earn and for many women of color it's much lower. We need to close the wage gap once and for all.
#EqualPayDay
June and I are keeping
@RepRaskin
in our thoughts as he begins treatment for cancer. He’s always faced every challenge with tenacity and courage, and we know he’ll do the same this time.
I was joined by special guest
@JohnKDelaney
and hundreds of CD6 residents going down to the March for Our Lives this morning. As Congressman Delaney told the crowd, this week Congress banned bump stocks and allowed the CDC to do research on gun violence BECAUSE of this march.
Rather than listening to the recommendations of his own commission, Trump is now proposing that we arrest our way out of the opioid crisis, which will only make things worse. Addiction is a public health problem, not a criminal justice problem.
In business, I've learned a lot about the importance of forming relationships. It's why I would never appoint someone like John Bolton to a key position. America is strongest when the rest of the world is with us.
The Washington Post perfectly captures the effects of the opioid epidemic in
#MD06
. I hear about it from voters everywhere I go. It’s why I’ve released a 12-point plan to deal with the crisis. We need real solutions, and we need them now.
Instead of banning books and attacking public school curriculum, those in the Senate should be focused on banning the sale of assault weapons and protecting young Americans.
Please join me for a free Community Service Meeting on the Opioid Crisis in Cumberland this Sunday. There will be a panel of experts to talk about best practices for combatting the epidemic as well as opportunities for you to share your stories.
Education has played a crucial role in my life, and I wouldn't be where I am today without the help of so many great educators who invested their time and energy in me. That's why I'm so proud to be endorsed by Maryland educators.
Access to abortion is under attack.
Too many Americans already lack access – and if Congress doesn’t act – millions more could see their abortion rights taken away.
As Maryland's next United States Senator, I will vote to codify abortion protections into federal law.
DREAMers were brought here as children. For many of them, America is the only country they know and English is the only language they speak. It’s reprehensible to use them as bargaining chips for a border wall.
Trump is all talk and no action on opioids. I’m running for Congress because I refuse to stand on the sidelines and watch more of our loved ones die from this epidemic.
From the bottom of my heart I want to thank the voters of the 6th District for allowing me the privilege of being your next representative in Congress. Tomorrow we begin the hard work of restoring civility, competence, and compassion to Washington.
We are 6 days from defaulting on our debt, 6 days from seniors losing their healthcare benefits, 6 days from our nation losing financial credibility.
My message to Speaker McCarthy: I will vote for a clean debt bill to save our economy. Stop the games. Get it done.
President Obama made great strides in combating veteran homelessness. And we need to finish the job he started. The only acceptable number of homeless veterans is zero.
Surgery this morning won't stop me from getting the job done. I'm back at the Capitol and ready to stay here as long as it takes to elect a Speaker and get back to work on behalf of the American people.
The problem is particularly bad in Western Maryland. In Allegany County, the opioid prescription rate is double the national average. We need action to address this crisis, or more Americans will continue dying every day.
Strong performance tonight from
@JohnDelaney
. His bipartisan carbon tax plan is the kind of policy we need to move our country forward, and he’s got a realistic plan to tackle the addiction crisis.
NBC should give his ideas more time.
Grateful to see more and more Democratic Presidential candidates releasing plans to
#EndtheAddictionCrisis
. Today,
@PeteButtigieg
released a bold plan. The opioid & addiction epidemic is the number one issue facing our nation, and we must act with urgency.
Agriculture is the number one industry in Maryland and it's particularly vital to Western Maryland's economy. Already struggling farmers will be hurt badly if Trump's ill-conceived trade war continues.
Please join me for a free Community Service Meeting on the Opioid Crisis in Rockville this Saturday. There will be a panel of experts to talk about best practices for combatting the epidemic as well as opportunities for you to share your stories.
"Tough on crime" and "just say no" didn't work before, and they won't work now. More incarceration is a step in the wrong direction. It leads to more people coming out of prison still addicted and unable to support themselves.
Pharmaceutical companies give more to politicians than any other industry. So it's no wonder why Congress hasn't held them accountable for their deception. This is why I refuse to take any money from PACs and lobbyists.
Students shouldn't have to use clear backpacks and walk through metal detectors at school. These insane safety measures shouldn't even have to exist in schools.
America has a serious gun violence problem and action is long overdue.
A sad reminder that every day we don't act, more families lose loved ones. This is why I've introduced a comprehensive plan to address the opioid crisis.
This past weekend, I was honored to host House Speaker
@TeamPelosi
and over 1,300 people at Gaithersburg High School to talk about the progress we are making in the House for the people.
.
@NeilParrott
, your poise and grace in conceding after a hard-fought campaign is appreciated. It’s on all of us to protect the future of our democracy and our free and fair elections, and you’ve shown that today. Thank you.
My mother was a public school teacher, and I know hard teachers work to make sure the next generation has the best opportunities. We need to invest in the training they need and the pay that they deserve.
It's estimated that $3 billion is stolen from seniors every year. We need to do more to ensure that people are protected. That's why I support the bipartisan Senior Fraud Prevention Act.
Great piece by
@RepCummings
, &
@SenWarren
. We lost too many lives because of our slow response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We can’t make the same mistake again.
It’s time to put fresh food back on the table and make sure our kids are ready to hit the ground running when they go back to school. Our children are our future. We need to invest in their success.
I hear about this all the time when I meet with people who work at hospitals in Western Maryland. One hospital administrator told me that 28% of newborns delivered there suffer from addiction.
Congress has a responsibility to do what's right for the next generation. But instead, they do what helps them win the next election. These students are fed up with it, and they're taking action.
#NationalWalkoutDay
It's so incredibly important that we end the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage anyone who needs treatment to get it.

Big pharmaceutical companies are jacking up prices on lifesaving medication for millions of Americans.
While serving in the House of Representatives, I voted to cap insulin costs and hold these companies accountable.
In the U.S. Senate, I’ll continue this fight.
Keeping guns out of the hands of convicted domestic abusers is just common sense. I’ve pledged to fight for this in Congress, and I’m glad that Frederick Delegate Carol Krimm is working pass it in Annapolis.
