we need more 24 hr cozy cafes
my ideal list:
- subscription based (!!) & unlimited coffee
- non-wework-corporate feel that you can relax in: cozy ambience, warm lighting, wood, low-profile
- no lyrics music for focus
- in-house library
taiwan has many of these
everyday i find it harder to believe in anti-college rhetoric there is no way even 1% of the eccentric events that occur on a daily basis can be replicated post-grad. 0.5 mile density (of people thoughts ideas) leads to wonderful things
today i learned that phd thesis defenses are just open to the public... like you can just walk into a lecture hall on a random thursday and get a very advanced explanation on compilers from this person who has spent 5 years studying it ...
unironically put all your eggs in one basket. reduce optionality to a tee. try really hard for 1 thing and put everything into it. beautiful things will happen.
life updatee ill be working at
@culdesac
this summer :D (building the 1st ever car-free neighborhood)๐ฒ๐ถโโ๏ธ so excited to help turn walkable US cities into a reality
i actually really wanna build this in the bay area (berkeley or sf) but dunno how finances will work out!! an idea is using a restaurant but turning their space into a late night coworking space when they close
TIL my 12 y/o sister is making her living in roblox by being a full-time uber driver and aggressively forcing kids to tip her ๐ฅฒ
she also had no idea what the sims were?? how
past 36 hours: built a tool urban planners can use to extract super granular data about unwalkable SF streets โ> use
@OpenAI
CLIP to turn them walkable! got most impactful hack @ treehacks ๐
CityGO devpost here ~
done with finals ~~ and can finally get back into fun startup stuff ๐
1st goal: learning how to code web apps
would be GREAT to hear anyone's tips for learning!
a few bos vs sf scene observations. i may be wrong as ive been here for a few days.
- pats are replaced with collared polos stacked w cashmere sweaters.
- vibe is very academia, pursuing knowledge just bc (e.g. i write papers on pure math for a living) vs. "is this pragmatic"
the difference between this and say, watching a youtube video is you get the cultural meaning of a milestone aka historical context. answers the big "so what" question, so you actually appreciate the stuff the person is saying
on behalf of all summer interns who consume chipotle daily, i propose "chipotle-as-a-service" where we can rent tall, muscular ppl to purchase food on behalf so the workers will give more sustenance. there is only so much extra chicken i can ask for that is socially acceptable
only way i see college/dorm life being simulated is just by living on the same street as your friends and luckily some sf neighborhoods have that sorta extreme density โฆ but itโs not the same ๐งโโ๏ธ
cal students... tired of sf happy hours ? want to get some real work done? pull up to whiteboards and waffles
+ hosted by the wonderful berkeley pod
@contrarycapital
today i received intel that there is a coffee club @ cal where they get tgt on sunday mornings and make vietnamese/french press/cold brew coffee together ... ๐ซถ๐ซถ๐ซถ
best part is you dont even have to apply ๐ฅบ๐ซถ
exploring is great but skin in the game must be manufactured (either artificially or naturally) for it to be effective. and the idea of losing out on a lot makes you naturally just do more
kept a messy log of ml learning
a use case that's been on my mind is generating city layouts/community spaces/quaint downtowns using params like ideal density/ppl flow
essentially...creating computational formulas of alexander's 253 pattern languages๐ฎ
back in my substack era hehe
wrote a piece on yokochos, or japan's tiny alleyways that function as incredible third places.
japan is so unique in that they've been able to cultivate strong neighborhood life in a booming metropolitan city.
ppl think tiktok is a joke but it's such a good app if u get the right algorithm. it articulates specific feelings i cant put into words, reminds me to romanticize the littlest things in life, and is a moving vision board. might be the most gen z thing to say but i โค๏ธ tiktok
as a beverage enthusiast i am placing a very personal bet on chai for 2024. soon, our coffee shops will not just have chai lattesโฆ but chai pastries, cookies, and desserts. we will see more cafes dedicated JUST for chai. vanilla oat milk lattes are no more. chai is comingโฆ

@alishbaimran_
yes :) problem w wework tho is you feel like you can't really relax. want something more low-profile where you can read/spend an afternoon writing/paint etc.
2nd point continued .. met a guy today who studies triangles all day long. thats crazy impressive
- human-scale streets that feel intimate. most buildings are no more than 4 stories, lots of internal courtyards that serve as a third space between labs
topic ideas for next semester...
- advanced cuda/wrangling clusters. cuda is hard man. getting the basics down is cool but expert level cuda is something else. ย
- get good at c! systems ๐
- get even better at react (typescript, debugging more efficiently, thinking in react)
i am vv excited to try research for the first time. there's a lot of hard problems with cities rn, so i want to go deep into quantifying what ~exactly~ makes vibrant neighborhoods and great cities from a technical perspective (density/circulation/street activity/grid patterns ..)
trying to set up a ~passive income~ thing this summer (no need to be crazy even $100/month is pretty good) anyone have experience/tips? looking at dropshipping but open to other things
last semester was lots of self-taught full stack dev and ml, so very grateful to join the artificial intelligence cluster at the lab. most work will be around applied computer vision and hardware.
sf's beautiful waterfront used to be reserved for a never-ending sea of ugly highways.
now it's built for people, not cars. the difference is astounding :0
my tests:
- does my mind float towards it during class, chores, walking?
- if i couldnt tell anyone about it, would i still do it?
... what would you add?
curious about....
- best programming language to start off with (ik baseline html/css but that was from a class 3 years ago ๐ฅฒ)
- i learn best thru videosโonline course suggestions?
- general tips/resources
also mothers are ebiking with 3 children sitting in the back. and grandmas and grandpas are sitting outside in parks people watching. "eyes on the street" really does make a huge difference, thanks jane jacobs. its truly fun to meander here and explore aimlessly
theyve made knowledge management a culture thing
- writing is accepted from everyone (anyone w an idea can, and is encouraged to write it down)
- people are encouraged to circulate thoughts around
- when people put things to paper, theyre more likely to execute
- memos > ppt
future ๐ญs for substack:
1. how do we cultivate community intimacy through space?
2. can a certain design for streets, parks, or greenscapes push people closer together?
3. what makes a great third place?
4. how can tactical urbanism test these ideas?
this is a compilation of my notes & thoughts from the book: emergent tokyo!! thank u to
@McReynoldsJoe
for writing such a great book.
highly rec a physical copy bc the architectural models are crazy good
i would like to give a standing ovation to the best punctuation of all time โ the em dash. what a beautiful, functional contribution to the english language. all summed up in a cute lil line ๐ฅบ
@jwmares
iโm 16 rn and highly recommend starting a super simple biz first (sell notion templates, photo presets, literally anything over the internet). teaches u how to talk to ppl and grow :) wrote a guide for teens here too:
New post!
- tech hype and how it sucks young people in
- not getting caught up in the latest shiny trends
- using school to develop taste

quotes.
just realized I accidentally gifted my hs teacher last year CBD-infused drinks
I was trying to gift a memorable thing so I gave a gift card for , thought it was a simple relaxation drink โโ but its actually hemp infused๐
