wait so re:fantasy has press turn, MegaTen skill names, and might even have magnetite? Hashino really just made a stealth mainline SMT game, why the hell did they ever consider Soul Hackers 2 the third pillar???
"holy shit its an enemy from Earthbou--"
WRONG, this is Kamiotoko without makeup. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers for the Nintendo 3DS sweep
This is my favorite Jack Frost sprite, he has become the ultimate scrunkly.
If you know what game this guy is from, you're one of the most powerful megatennists to ever exist.
@realjudoippon
my opinion is obv biased but it really bothers me when I go to watch an "analysis" video and it's just someone describing what happens ๐ญ i can go read a wikipedia entry myself dawg
It's so weird seeing people say SMTV was a flop because it didn't sell as much as P5 when it's literally the best-selling mainline game ever and Persona has been outselling SMT since '96. Like no one was expecting V to sell more than P5, much less everything it's sold since 2016.
I got a few mostly MegaTen related ones, so thread
Press turn will never be balanced because the AI is unable to use it optimally against the player. Funnily enough, whenever a boss is actually able to take advantage of a game mechanic, it's treated like the hardest boss ever.
The Persona fanbase is so lame man. You can't even say "I think this stuff would be cool" without dozens of people psychoanalyzing you and getting mad about someone they made up in their head.
P6 wishlist:
-Female protag
-No weird teacher dating social link
-Some playables are adults i.e. p2 EP
-No cops
-quirky references to other persona and Atlus titles in general
-no twist villain
This shit is physically painful, man. You're telling me he was actively going around to other video game companies for a job and THIS is where he landed? I mean I can respect wanting more creative control and all, but damn we could've had the world...
Serious question, can Lotus Juice fans name a single good bar the man has? I know people like how his music sounds, but as far as lyricism goes I've never heard anything from him beyond the typical "lyrical miracle spiritual individual".
The latest Persona 3 Reload commercial has been uploaded to YouTube, which also has the first part of the new Lotus Juice song in it.
What do y'all think it is? Sounds like a boss battle theme to me
I'm already tired of seeing posts like this. You're not gonna make me feel bad for liking that is ATLUS directly addressing the complaints I had and explaining how they're gonna try to fix them. I don't mind supporting rereleases if they actually FIX THE GAME.
This is your daily reminder that SMT is NOT about addressing social issues and it is NOT political. Please avert your eyes from the screenshots accompanying this tweet as they are unrelated and also blasphemous.
@capes_kid
Using an idea that can be considered something of sociology or politics is different from making it the focus of the series.
SMT draws on ideas from many other aspects of life, but that doesn't mean that SMT is about Japanese cuisine.
That SMT is a strictly gameplay focused series.
Some people equate sheer amount of dialog with writing depth, and end up accidentally ignoring some really interesting themes. Though tbf, it's easy for that stuff to go over your head if you don't have cultural/religious context.
In Kaneko Works I, Kaneko described Chaos Hero's design in the latter half of Shin Megami Tensei I as having the outfit of Piccolo with the vibe of Goku. His hairstyle in particular was based on Super Saiyan. Akira Toriyama's influence in pop culture really cannot be overstated.
Today's the anniversary of the death of Yukio Mishima, a nationalist who committed seppuku at a JSDF military base in an attempt to get people to reject Western influence. He was the inspiration for Colonel Gotou, one of SMT1's Chaos reps. In KKW1, Kaneko said it was his idea.
Happy 31st birthday to Shin Megami Tensei!
If you're a fan of Megam Tensei, I cannot recommend that you experience this game enough. The way its themes use contemporary culture, religion, and philosophy is still striking and unique even within the series to this day.
Something I don't really see people talk about in SMTV is Aogami's comment about the Demon Summoning Program. This is clearly a reference to how extreme SMT characters get, but here it might be like a literal plot element. I'm curious what people think about that if so.
Happy birthday to Megami Tensei! Today is the 37th anniversary of the first print of
@ayanakajima3
's novel "Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei"! To celebrate, we made an visual audiobook that will be premiering at 3:31 PM EST (about 20 min. from now).

Custom framed "Another Spawn" (Shiva Spawn(?) and Angels) key art by Kazuma Kaneko & Megumi Shiraishi GET! ๐ฅณ
"Another" amazing and rarely seen art piece added to the collection ๐
It's been really bugging me that people are making this about ATLUS not caring about P1/2, when the fact is that very few at P Studio rn were working at ATLUS when those games were being developed, and even those that did had minor staff roles.
Persona 3 Reload Interview is up on IGN.
Q: Why was Persona 3 chosen to be remade over its predecessor?
A: We believe Persona 3 marked the actual turning point in the Persona franchise, it's a important title for Atlus as well for the og dev team who were involved in with P3
The instant I saw his face mask started writing the obligatory 3 hour long video essay about how SMTV Vengeance is about COVID and how it affected the staff and development cycle. It's too late, you can't stop me, I'm psychic.
The term "outdated". Not liking an old game is one thing, but acting like a game being older means its objectively worse somehow makes my brain instantly turn off. Games being different and expiremental is cool actually.
@capes_kid
also another fun fact: Yasuda wrote alot of comments about the girlโs breast size (specially Yuzuโs) in his sketch art for the girls and he wouldnโt stop mentioning their sizes for some reason lmao
This is a good reminder that the idea that ATLUS neglects mainline ignores the fact that ATLUS has been porting half the franchise to Virtual Console for over a decade. They just don't bother localizaling them. They have SMT1 on like 15 different consoles over there lol
This actually bothers me SO much, because ATLUS presents chaos as representing freedom while their entire ethos revolves around maintaining a hierarchy (weak vs strong) and Lucifer is LITERALLY a king.
I genuinely need to know how come every time someone says "I want Persona with a slightly different focus", people respond with games that are entirely different. Like do you really think they don't know about one of the fastest growing series in the past decade?
One of my wiki friends is in Japan rn, so I asked them to pay a visit to Kishimonjin shrine as a favor. This is the place where ATLUS staff go to pray to Hariti before starting development on a new game. Be sure to remember her whenever you see her in an SMT game.
Fun fact: Michael's design in SMT1 (and by extension 2) is actually based on a specific statue on the Coventry Cathedral. That said, I'm super down for an angel in SMT to be based on the arcabucero. There's so many cool things you can do with angels.
Imo the worst part about being a JRPG fan rn is that most people only care to engage with the genre insofar as the combat and effectively thinks everything else is just a vehicle to get the player from point A to B as smoothly as possible. Any friction is dismissed offhand.
the idea that resource management in a fucking RPG falls under "quality of life" is mind-boggling. bro that's not a little feature you can turn on or off that's half the fucking game

I feel pretty mixed about this design, but I think the weirdest part about it is that they took away the long hair. I can guess why they did, but it was the most standout aspect of the original design and was easily my favorite part. It felt like a definitive feature of the MC.
Belphegor is such an underrated design. The fact that Kaneko made it almost 1-to-1 to the Dictionnaire Infernal art, but gave him a modern toilet makes it one of the funniest designs in the series imo.
alright on the other side of this door is some crazy monster that beat ruperts ass...and thats a demon sitting on a toilet with its legs spread in my face ๐
A lot of UI elements in P5T are based on soviet revolutionary constructivist art. The white in P5's original palette turns more cream colored to match the old paper look.
My theory is that V both excels and fails at things so spectacularly that everyone who plays games for specific stuff had a strong reaction to it. At the end of the day, you just gotta accept people have different tastes. It's not hard to see why someone would love or hate it.
This screenshot of this new area in SMTV Vengeance looks neat. I hope ATLUS goes back and redesigns some of the Da'at areas to make them more distinct, because after a while it got kinda boring looking at desert everywhere imo.
@PowerfulHag
Craziest thing is that they deadnamed one of the characters in the credits. Like dawg, she's fictional, you literally made her, you know she doesn't go by that name. They had to have gone out of their way to do some shit like that.
Shinohara designed the SMT4 Minotaur that everyone loves. He also did Kob Saburo, Chemtrail, Sanat, Napaea, Tenkai, Dullahan, and my personal favorite, Ancient of Days.
TIL some Korean fan(s) made fan-translated PC ports of both SMT1 and 2 GBA. I have no idea how this is even possible, but they did a phenomenal job! It even has an added mode you can toggle with extra NPC dialog and better audio quality. They've been updated as recently as 2022.
Happy 30th birthday to Shin Megami Tensei II! The game is absolutely beautiful and has one of the best stories in all of MegaTen, so I'd highly recommend anyone check it out. This is the definitive game for anyone interested in the series alignment system.
No idea if this guy is joking and I think Catherine is a really cool game, but even putting aside the fact that Catherine isn't MegaTen, if someone came into it specifically looking for a depiction of LGBT romance they're going to be seriously disappointed if not offended tbh.
So I was wondering why SMT NINE was a Platinum XBOX hit because it's generally considered a flop, so I looked into it and apparently it was in the top 10 best selling XBOX games in Japan BARELY hitting 45k.
(Ignore the [All versions] listings, those are doubles)
Found some deep-cut lore about Chaos Hero. Apparently his mother died at a young age and his father is an alcoholic so he felt isolated both in and outside of his home. Knowing his mom passed adds a layer to "try not to feel too bad", so it's pretty weird how it's never mentioned
