Just wanted everybody to know I was awarded as a "CEO of the Year" by CEO Monthly.
And shortlisted as "50 Smartest Companies of the year 2020" by The Silicon Review.
Both are asking me to give them $1,000 for the award, but I humbly accept their acknowledgment as enough.
Got a YC interview?
Cool. Don’t tweet about it.
A common thing I’m seeing founders do, is give away leverage.
You should personally feel great. Out of 10,000+ applicants you were in the top 10%!
But getting a YC interview is not like being an Academy Award Nominee.
Flying home after 3 days in NYC for investors meetings... with my 5yo. Obviously much more energy then just going solo, but much more meaningful for the both of us. Been considering it for a while and here’s why I decided to...
I've never felt more inspired and burdened by the opportunity to build something I care so deeply about. I'm so thankful for my cofounders, team & investors... and to the parents who continue to trust us with the care of the most important things in this world.
In the hotel jacuzzi… Couple with kids asks if we’re visiting Portland.
Me: “No, we live here. We’re just hanging out and then we’ll go home and my wife will stay here.”
Woman: “She’s staying by herself?”
Me: “Yup”
She looks directly at her husband.
He looks directly at me.
Being a founder is a lot like playing a bunch of games of chess simultaneously, where each game affects other games... and half the games are actually checkers but you don't know which ones they are.
Saying goodbye on a video call and then both being there for a few more seconds as you hunt for the close button is a lot like when you say goodbye to somebody on the street and then end up walking the same direction for a block.
So many successful entrepreneurs had trauma in their childhood and or are still chasing approval from authority figures… I wonder how much I'm hurting my kid's entrepreneurial chances by raising them in a happy/healthy home, and showing them so much love & affection... 🤷🏻♂️
I was in a small Iranian airport in 2008, the manager came over to talk as there weren't a lot of Americans visiting. He said "The war is between our governments, not our people."
Love to my Persian brothers & sisters.
I took my son to a Pediatric Urgent Care & it changed my life… I hope it changes yours too.
I met Dr. Corey Fish when he stitched my son's face up… Now we're cofounders, and building a company to make Children's Urgent Care accessible to parents across the US.
Why?
Got to visit with my father for the first time in 16mo.
At 92yo I have a countable number of times I’ll get to see him in this life. He kissed me good night and the smell of his cologne and feeling of cheek flashed me thru every time he’s done it.
I then went to bed and cried.
Landlords saying tenants should have 6mo savings to cover expenses in case of lost work...
Should have 6mo savings to cover expenses in case of lost rental income.
You chose an asset class that is also a basic need.
We have taken our kids back to my in-laws, so our Portland house could be used by providers who are at high risk of infection but don’t want to expose their family to that risk.
Let me know if there’s a need.
All the
#COVID19
news can be scary, especially when you're a parent trying to protect your kids.
We made this page & tool so parents don't have to try and keep track of everything. The important stuff is here in one place for you and other parents.
“Do your own research.”
Um, no. I will not. I’m not an expert on the subject matter.
I don’t have access to a statistically significant dataset nor would I have the skills to analyze that data.
I don’t know how to read peer reviewed research papers to draw factual conclusions.
In the middle of an investor pitch & my 3yo shouts "I'm done!" from the potty because she needs a wipe… makes me laugh. And it's the perfect chance to align priorities… if you're bothered by it, or me prioritizing her, I'm not gonna be the right investment.

Maia. She/Her. 6. Loves video games and riding bikes. And she has more of a chance to be happy as her authentic self because of women like you. Thank you.
What a crazy past 6mo trying to build out and open a great new pediatric care clinic... Very much appreciating our team that worked hard to bring this new care experience to life.
Hello SE Portland! Welcome to Brave Care
Men. If you send unsolicited inappropriate messages to women on any platform, especially on professional ones... if those women can't publicly blast you because of the risk to themselves... I will happily post it and blast you. Get out of their DMS & get your shit together.
Your Noe Valley neighbors feeling a little too close these days? … laterally trade for an off-grid modern homestead in Hawaii with your closest neighbor a half mile away.
One of the most unhealthy things about the startup world is how easy it is to look over your neighbor’s fence… so much jealousy, anxiety, frustration, etc comes from looking over instead of just appreciating the yard you’re in and making it great.
Doesn't feel good to brag in 2020... But I'm incredibly proud of the medical staff we have at
@BraveCare
... I know from personal experience how they take such great care of kids when they're hurting. It's always nice to see that echoed by our parents...
43 acre, off-grid, modern homestead with a huge walk-in pantry, on the most isolated island chain in the world... wish the repairs were finished on my ranch, cause there's somebody in SF looking to buy right now.
Founder / Market Fit:
When your wife calls because she’s concerned about your sick toddler, so you just hand the phone to your cofounder that you’re in a 1:1 meeting with because he’s a Pediatric Dr.
2 less sexy but very meaningful levels of wealth...
You can pay for something without worrying the charge will be declined (been years since this has happened but I still get the anxiety it might)
You can buy groceries without looking at the prices.
Picked my son up from preschool and they said he had a fever and was tired… drove right over to
@BraveCare
, was seen in a few minutes and got a rapid flu test done. Little dude has Influenza A.
Catching it this early will reduce his time sick by a day or two.
Everybody…
WFH parents... I know it's exhausting with your kids around all the time. But today, take a break, give them an extra hug and love. We have in the grand scheme of things very little time with them. 💔❤️
Nothing brings me more joy than little kids, so I'm very stoked to be joining the Board of
@MakeAWishHawaii
, an organization that brings so many children joy in their hardest times. For several years I've been lucky to be a Wish Granter & supporter with my "carsplays."
Wanna be a hero? Will only take you a couple hours, and all you gotta do is kill time on your phone.
Just go to a DMV and pull a number when the wait is 1-2hrs. Wait. Then give your number to a mother with a young child.
Walk out or repeat.
One of my major investors sent me a text to say how well
@BraveCare
took cared for his little one.
We give all our investors’ kids especially great care. It’s the same care we give to every kid.
I’m surprised how often people say off hand to somebody else “you look tired.” I think it’s meant compassionately, but really comes across as an insult.
When you’re working hard, taking care of others, taking risks… of course you’re going to be tired.
We’re all tired.
Parents: DO NOT play “I’m more tired than you” with your partner. This isn’t a game you can win.
When they say “I’m so tired.” This isn’t a challenge to your exhaustion. They can be tired regardless of how tired you are.
The only good reply is… “anything I can do for you?”
I'd love the chance to work with you on something I care so much about... we've got roles open in HR, Product and Engineering along with our clinic roles.
I don't do well with personally receiving praise, but in this case I'm happy as a company to receive this recognition because the score we were ranked from, came from our employees…
Our goal is to provide excellent care for kids, and we can only do that if we provide an excellent place to work.
We're honored to be recognized as one of
@Inc
's Best Workplaces of 2020, which means we're on the right track.
#IncBestWorkplaces
We're very happy to share our funding news and partnership with an incredible organization doing such important care in the pediatric space... we've come so far in just a few years, and are even more excited for how far we'll go!
If you think Telehealth is the future of pediatric care, you've never tried to get a 6yo to give you precise information about what hurts, where, how long, etc... while operating with the patience of a tired parent.
Shoutout to great women...
My wife for packing the gift bags to 20 kids in shelters or with terminally ill parents that Batman will be delivering Christmas Eve.
And Kat
@avoiceandname
for organizing this all.
I'm very proud of the hard work that went into opening our first clinic outside of Portland. As somebody who comes from a small town, continuing to open clinics in smaller cities & towns is incredibly important in making sure every kid has a chance to reach their full potential.
🥳 We've opened a new clinic in Fayetteville, NC! (It's official because we had a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the mayor.)
We're honored to begin caring for the children of this tight-knit community.
We're also incredibly proud of our Brave Care team that got this all done!
@HoalaGreevy
Dang, I already replied to their emails and thanked them for the honor. But you're right, I'll follow up with my invoice. I mean, you don't become CEO of the Year by doing free marketing like this!
If you don’t get in... Instead of starting at a neutral place with investors, you have to explain your way out of a rejection.
But if you don’t publicly announce your interview, and don’t get in… gained nothing, but didn’t give anything away.
Is there a CEO/exec retreat that’s at a working ranch?
Like you can have a morning talk about leadership, and then go break a sweat in the dirt for a couple hours?
The capacity to love is magical.
You can fall in love with a partner and give them your whole heart...
Then you have a kid and instead of sharing love, you somehow double your capacity.
My message I really want to land with my kids… see that every person is the same. Human. But that we aren’t all treated the same. Advocate for those without your privileges. Rise even further than I’ve lifted you, but bring others up with you.
* The fine print.
Don’t ever lie. If somebody asks, tell the truth. This isn’t about trying to trick or mislead investors. Just consider every bit of info you share... does it help or hurt your mission.
This is aimed at founders who intend to raise money from Angels & VCs.
If you want a window into the soul of who you really are...
Watch your toddler make a pretend phone call and see how they talk to the person on the other end.
Oregon has closed gyms, but churches are open… so my brother who is a trainer and online ordained minister is going to be holding worship at the house of gains.
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
PDX officials. What can we do now to prepare to assist in the event travel is restricted & home isolation is mandatory?
How can
@BraveCare
support kids in need of emergency care with home visits, when ER is at capacity? Let’s talk now.
15yrs ago today I was in Portland, I watched the news and the first videos coming out of Thailand showing the terrible destruction. I booked a ticket to Phuket and spent the next 5mo living there helping the survivors rebuild. I worked hard, but still feel I got more than I gave.
15 yrs ago today I arrived in Phuket, Thailand on vacation. I walked the beach, had dinner, and went to bed.
The next morning I took an 8:30am boat to Ko Phi Phi.
At 9am the tsunami made landfall in Phuket. 230,000 people died in the worst natural disaster in a century.

@shl
I’m so glad you’re sharing this stuff, because it directly calls me on my own shit... in February I was jealous and eight months later I used that kind of news to validate myself somehow. And at both times I was wrong.
