Distribution shifts are not a nuisance to be engineered away - rather, let's make use of them. Natural intelligent systems probably do too. A paper to be presented at NeurIPS today studies this under the assumption that causal mechanisms generating data tend to be robust.

10/ The 2012 paper had a hard time getting into ICML. Two reviews favored rejection, two acceptance. There was a criticism that the paper is very different from standard ICML papers. But there was also a view that it could be groundbreaking. Thanks!

6/ By a meta-analysis of benchmarks, it shows that Semi-Supervised Learning is hard in the causal direction, but possible otherwise. This corroborated a theoretical prediction made in an earlier version () and in my NeurIPS 2011 Posner lecture.
