As Congress debates cutting funding for programs that end hunger in the budget and through tax cuts, we must speak up for those who will be hit the hardest by our government's fiscal choices.
We cannot food bank our way out of this crisis. Foodbanks and church pantries were already struggling to meet need before the crisis. In 2018 federal nutrition programs delivered nearly 14 times the amount of assistance than religious congregations.

Q8: We are seeing food pantries overwhelmed by growing needs. What is the appropriate role of charities vs. the federal government during a crisis?

Bread for the World strongly supports waivers to provide flexibility during school closures. For children, even brief periods of hunger carry consequences that may last a lifetime.
No child deserves to go hungry during a public health crisis. So, today I requested that Agriculture Secretary Perdue and USDA proactively inform state agencies of the availability of waivers to provide flexibilities for Child Nutrition Programs in the event of school closures.
