Missing from the CNN interview with
@GovLarryHogan
was any question from
@DanaBashCNN
about why the governor needed to use secure, self-deleting message apps if the conversations were “casual.”
A personal news update: I’m on the floor of the House of Delegates this morning for the election of the state treasurer in my new capacity as a reporter for

@GovWesMoore

withdraws 48 recess appointments made by
@GovLarryHogan
including Torrey Snow, a local radio personality, two members of the Univ. System of Md board of regents, two PSC members and an appointment to the Commission on Judicial disabilities.
Lawyers Mall is reopened and the Justice Thurgood Marshall statute is no longer wrapped in a protective covering. The new benches with key court cases is a nice touch.
For a governor who chides the Md General Assembly frequently about business done in “back rooms” the use of an app that deletes conversations by public officials is the ultimate digital speakeasy of back rooms.
A tiny bit of history at this morning's Brd of Public Works. Today marks the first time the three-member panel was chaired by a woman of color,

The chairman of the senate judicial proceedings committee chastises second amendment advocates who are wearing a Star of David symbol with a gun inside it calling it “disgusting” and and tells others they can take it off or leave
A moment of levity following the 2015 riot in Baltimore.
@KeifferMitchell
encourages
@GovLarryHogan
to buy a snowball from a sidewalk stand. Mitchell recommends “sky blue.” The Governor asked what flavor that was. “Blue,” Mitchell dead-panned.

1 year ago these little hooligans were born. They were nearly 7 weeks premature. Today they’re happy, healthy, and on track with their full term peers. They sleep through the night, love tater tots, swings and their dog. We’re very blessed. Happy Birthday, Sam and AJ.
President Joe Biden taps Maryland Democratic former Gov. Martin O’Malley to head the Social Security Administration. O’Malley’s appointment is contingent on Senate confirmation.
The good thing about this COVID-19 issue, if that can even be said, is that we learned that all the excuses for why the Md General Assembly can’t livestream voting sessions and video from the floor aren’t really valid anymore.

@GovWesMoore
has ordered the Maryland flag lowered to half-staff effective immediately to honor those who died in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The order remains in place until further notice.
Some history worth noting at the state Board of Public Works. Today marks the first time since 2002 that women have held two of the three seats on the panel. The meeting was chaired by Lt. Gov.
@arunamiller
who was joined by Comptroller
@BrookeELierman

The administration prides itself on transparency but transparency comes before reporters call. Prior to the Washington post report, there was no public discussion I’m aware of by governor about an intent to use secure messaging apps.
The five-member

The hardest part was not texting my wife to let her know before the news or social media got to her. The hardest part was texting a colleague to stay away from the state house and giving him my wife’s cell phone number just in case.
My friend
@Bruce_DePuyt

caught this interaction between me and

. Apparently I was the only one who thought it was “dress like a Maryland governor day.” ;) it’s hard to tell who is who but the I’m on the left. ;)
The juxtaposition of my day: a photo of Big Bird visiting to promote reading in the morning. By 5, I was hunkered down behind file cabinets in a dark locked press room in the State House waiting for police to evacuate us. We’re all safe but situation continues.
“Baltimore’s only news chopper” hovers over an outdoor presser drowning out the story of a highway worker almost killed in a crash. Which station complains they couldn’t hear him? Guess
Well this is different. It’s not every day I come to work and three military vehicles are out front of the State House and uniformed Md State Troopers are milling about.
Well, the cat is partially out of the bag. Since I'm getting questions about a number of posts around, I can say yes, I am leaving The Daily Record after almost a decade as the paper's government & politics reporter.
Details on the future to come later.
On the last day of session the texts rolling in on how the Md. House and Senate streams aren’t working again. Remember folks, you’re dealing with a historic WiFi system installed when Washington resigned his commission. It’s made of parts of his false teeth.

Happy third birthday to Maggie the Wonder Golden. She and her boys have a mutual admiration society going on. The three of them are almost inseparable.
The big dig in Annapolis where a new DLS building will replace the old. That big square opening you see is the end of a tunnel that connected the State House to DLS to the House and Senate office buildings.
Apparently
@GovWesMoore
will be ringing a ceremonial bell tonight to mark the end of session. I’ve been in Annapolis two decades and never seen nor heard (of) said bell. It must be kept in the basement next to the boxes of attempts to make “fetch” happen.
The boys love goldfish and Old Bay, the seasoning of their people. These 10 bags make me the most popular adult in the Sears household — at least until they’re all gone.

He then orders a man who was wearing the symbol to leave the committee room, troopers then moved to escort the man out but he left without further incident
The last couple of years the State House cupola was looking a bit weathered.
Today, I arrived to see much of the scaffolding down, revealing a bright white dome again. Just beautiful. A great way for the 2023 session to start on Wednesday.
Hearing the sad news that long-time political columnist Frank DeFilippo has died.
I repost now a column he wrote for Maryland Matters in November 2021.
Safe home, sir.

@GovLarryHogan
declined to tell reporters the budget numbers for fiscal 2022 saying it wasn't part of his budget presentation to them. Apparently it was part of Budget Sec. Brinkley's preparations & visible on a yellow sticky note even as the governor declined to discuss it.
For the record: no news conferences scheduled by
@GovLarryHogan
at 5 p or any other time today, no extreme executive orders expected today. This is per an exchange I just had with a Hogan spox.
Anyone who says or posts differently on social media is being irresponsible.
Spotted on a walk back from lunch with my

It's 2024. Today my colleagues and I sheltered in place in response to a now unfounded threat. We had no other way of knowing except for the chief of staff to the Speaker of the House coming to the end of the hall and demanding we "close the door and lock it now."
House ECM chair Del. C.T. Wilson takes a page out of the book actor John Witherspoon’s character in the movie “Boomerang.” The secret is, you’ve got to coordinate. And for the record his socks are also on point. He just needs the belt. Happy sine die.

Two decades in the Md. State House and I never thought anyone would put together the phrase "counterfeit governor's citations" in a sentence at a news conference. It never occurred to me those words would be used together. That ended this morning.

With all the scaffolding up around the State House, it can be a challenge to get a photo that minimizes the work zone. But not an impossible challenge.
