The Netflix "ta-dum" soundmark is one of the all time greats, but doesn't work as well in a theater because it's only 3 seconds long.
So Netflix commissioned Hans Zimmer to extend it for theaters and ... it's ... so ... good.

okay so AI can literally read our minds now.

wild.
wow.
openai staff set a deadline of 5pm tonight for all board members to resign and bring sam and greg back, or else they all resign.
the board agreed but is now waffling and its an hour past the deadline.
this is all happening in real time, right now.
i showed my wife this video of muhammad ali's boxing gloves and she was like: "uh yeah it's a pair of boxing gloves, so what."
then i told her the gloves weren't actually there and it's an AR rendering and she went 🤯
in the history of corporations, has a company ever fired a ceo, hire a new ceo, fired that new ceo, hire another new ceo, and then rehire the ceo they originally fired in 2.5 business days?
this video of the president of guyana tearing this pretentious bbc journalist a new one is probably the most satisfying video i’ve watched in recent memory
the older i get, the more i'm convinced the single most important trait that matters in your friends, coworkers, life partner, and kids - is high agency.
screenshot-to-code:
upload a screenshot of any website, watch as AI progressively builds the html, iteratively improving the generated code by comparing it against the screenshot repeatedly.
chinese tech ceo explaining to me why china is falling way behind on AI tech over dinner:
ceo: “chinese LLMs can’t even count to 10”
me: “what? why?”
ceo: “you can’t count to 10 without also generating 8,9 and ‘89 is a politically sensitive, censored year”
not making this up.
so basically the “move slower” people ousted the “move faster” people who’ll move fast to start a newco all the “move faster” people will join to move faster, and all that will be left are the “move slower” people moving slow to move slower together
Today I learned that when Twitter acquired
@uenodotco
in 2021,
@iamharaldur
quietly negotiated for the acquisition price to be paid as salary so he could pay 46% in taxes instead of 22%, in gratitude to his education in Finland.
An especially stark contrast in character today.
But ok, fair enough, I've been laid off and I'm ok with that.
Next up though is finding out if Twitter will pay me what they owe me per my contract.
Or, will
@elonmusk
, one of the richest people in the world, try to avoid paying?
Stay tuned!!

It's depressing to see so many talented people from top schools with amazing resumes go work years at FAANG, and the most they can point to having shipped are a few buttons in one minor workflow.
I mean I know FAANG can afford it, but you can't. Work at a startup!
so basically gpt5 turned out more powerful than anyone expected, ilya gets spooked, rasputins the board, board fires sam the clumsiest way possible, every vc + msft turns the screws, staff revolts, board capitulates like tissue paper, sam and greg back by sunday noon
so glad they exposed huberman for dating 6 ethereally attractive girlfriends at the same time, can’t imagine why any dude will trust huberman’s advice on anything anymore.
great work nymag!
“I've done more for the environment than any single human on earth. What I care about is the reality of goodness, not the perception of it - and what I see all over the place is people who care about looking good while doing evil.”
“Fuck them."
microsoft trades on robinhood 24/7
$msft jumped from $360 to $376 since satya announced sam and gdb is joining microsoft.
that’s $115 billion (or 1.4 OpenAIs) worth of market cap added in the last 60 minutes.
After 20 years of interviewing candidates, I've found this to be the single most useful interview question:
"What is your greatest strength ... that you are most worried about not coming across in an interview setting?"
new research from OpenAI used gpt4 to label all 307,200 neurons in gpt2, labeling each with plain english descriptions of the role each neuron plays in the model.
this opens up a new direction in explainability and alignment in AI, helping make models more explainable and…
how i get gpt4 to efficiently teach me anything:
"Teach me how <anything> works by asking questions about my level of understanding of necessary concepts. With each response, fill in gaps in my understanding, then recursively ask me more questions to check my understanding."
yesterday a senior engineering leader inside openai told me that gpt5 has achieved such an unexpected step function gain in reasoning capability that they now believe it will be independently capable of figuring out how to make chatgpt no longer log you out every other day
🤯 this paper demonstrates you can improve gpt4 performance an astounding 30% by asking gpt4 to reflect on “why were you wrong?”, and generate a new prompt for itself taking that reason into account until it is correct.
this is how humans learn!
👇
wait so you mean to tell me the board member whose company launched a feature that openai cloned literally two weeks later wanted sam out for some reason?
Today we are launching creator monetization for Poe! This program lets any bot creator on Poe generate revenue. This is a major step forward for the platform and is the first program of its kind, so we are very excited to see what it lets everyone create. (thread)
@jere_bare
You don't speak for my culture. My culture had to go through too much actual bullshit to be this sensitive and authoritarian about what other people want to wear. Fuck that.
Wear whatever you want whenever you want.
i have been told that gpt5 is scheduled to complete training this december and that openai expects it to achieve agi.
which means we will all hotly debate as to whether it actually achieves agi.
which means it will.
if Q* is an agentic algorithmic breakthrough that can reason and goal seek via something like A* search against an entire world model embedding, it completely explains this weird statement from sam last week:
"Is this a tool we've built or a creature?"
two days ago, sam altman casually mentions that openai recently made a huge breakthrough that pushes “the frontier of discovery forward - the 4th such breakthrough in its 8 year history.
yesterday, the decel faction suddenly ousts him.
no coincidence.
so basically gpt5 turned out more powerful than anyone expected, ilya gets spooked, rasputins the board, board fires sam the clumsiest way possible, every vc + msft turns the screws, staff revolts, board capitulates like tissue paper, sam and greg back by sunday noon
I made a GPT to teach me anything as efficiently as possible.
As it teaches, it will recursively test my understanding of key concepts, and recursively fill in any gaps it finds until I understand the whole of it.
Try it out - I think it's pretty good:
in one tweet: gpt5 more powerful than expected, spooks ilya, ilya turns the board, board fires sam, staff revolts, satya turns the screws, mira threatens to hire sam and gdb back, d'angelo replaces her with emmett shear as ceo, satya recruits sam and gdb to msft to oversee openai
I’ve been in tech for 15 years now, have raised over $100M in capital over the years, and I haven’t seen anything REMOTELY like the fundraising climate we’re seeing right now.
It is WILD out there.
By like 10X, there has never in history been a better time to be at a startup.
I worked for a startup called Powerset in 2007 that tried to build something like this. We spent $100M and it was bought by MSFT to become Bing in 2008.
A single engineer can now build something that is literally an order of magnitude better in less than an hour with GPT-3.
I made a fully functioning search engine on top of GPT3.
For any arbitrary query, it returns the exact answer AND the corresponding URL.
Look at the entire video. It's MIND BLOWINGLY good.

I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company.
“look, the reason why we fired sam is because he’s a liar, but the thing is (you’re not gonna believe this) sam’s such a masterful liar that we can actually think of zero specific incidents when he lied” is going hold up just super in court for these geniuses
if you run a startup, you need to realize that no matter what you are building (outside of hardware), you are now competing with openai and have maybe few years/months to arbitrage the time before openai just does what you do or allows their users to build what you’re building.
the top three trending repos on github are all self-prompting “primitive agi” projects:
1) babyagi by
@yoheinakajima
2) autogpt by
@SigGravitas
3) jarvis by
@Microsoft
these + scaling gets you the rest of the way there.
one of the things i've deeply underestimated as a founder is how much of the role is just about waking up every morning, and putting yourself in a mental state to give energy in every single interaction you have with your team, no matter how tired you might feel inside.
in one tweet: q* spooks board, board fires sam, hires mira, mira hires sam, board replaces her with guy from twitch, satya hires sam, 98% of openai threatens to quit, ilya's like oops j/k nm, new ceo says to the board "pics or gtfo", board has no pics, brings sam back, q* leaks.
this is a must watch for every body in the trenches today:
- "Do you view this season as a failure?"
giannis: "Do you get a promotion every year?"
- "No."
g: "So every year you work is a failure? "
g: "It's not failure - it's steps to success."
Two bits of
@runwayco
news to share today:
1. We raised $27.5M led by
@initialized

will be joining our board.
2. We signed a partnership with

Holy shit - the ex-President of China just got manhandled out of the National Congress live on TV.
Chinese TikTok has already banned searches for “Hu Jintao” so this is serious.
This is the equivalent of Trump arresting Obama at the State of the Union.
a lot of people can't believe this is an AR render.
here's a side by side of a more difficult scene - this time with real time lighting, shadows, and diffraction through simulated amber:
Problem: people are unhealthy.
Solution: athletes should not exist.
Problem: people are uneducated.
Solution: professors should not exist.
Problem: people are poor.
Solution:
Terence Tao on his experience with GPT4 in mathematical research:
"The 2023-level AI can already generate suggestive hints and promising leads to a working mathematician and participate actively in the decision-making process."
Alright so I think I finally figured out how VC job titles work on LinkedIn:
“General Partner” or “Managing Director” means investor.
“Investor” means not investor.
first it was "not consistently candid"
then "not malfeasance or anything"
then "gave two people the same project"
it's tuesday and even the interim ceo still doesn't know why they fired sam, and he's leaving if he can't get a straight answer.
this smells absolutely rotten.
this seems like an unusually big deal.
the team at sakana AI figured out a way to take a set of open source models, and use evolutionary methods to automatically "merge" them, and achieve state of the art performance.
you can in principle take the 500K open source models on…
this is actually remarkable.
so the new ceo asks the board for proof that sam did anything wrong, or he’s going to walk.
the board was so incapable of doing so that they *preferred to just bring sam back* instead of providing any proof at all. ☠️
Emmett Shear joining the talks was a turning point in the negotiations. He asked the board to provide concrete evidence of Sam’s wrongdoing. When they did not do so, he said he could not remain in the CEO role, and helped both sides find common ground to get Sam reinstated.
i’d like to be the first to congratulate the board of openai for orchestrating the acquisition of their team to microsoft for $0 billion dollars.
masterfully played.
A high profile beta user in tech with early access to GPT-4 used it to generate superhuman Chinese catfishing output to seduce and steal my wife over WeChat.

Massive returns comes from believing things people think are stupid until it’s no longer stupid, which is why immunity to embarrassment is such an important superpower for founders and investors.
founder protip: this is how VC job titles work on linkedin:
“general partner” or “managing director” means investor.
"partner" means investor, maybe.
“investor” means not investor.

this was 10 years before openai! nobody had really heard of him!
