Today was the first lockdown drill at my son’s kindergarten. They called it “the silent game.”
At his request, he and I will be marching this Saturday, and we won’t be silent, and it’s not a game.
88 nights ago, white supremacists marched with torches in Virginia. Tonight, Virginia elected Justin Fairfax its second African-American lieutenant governor.
If Trump had flipped 10,342 votes in Wisconsin, 5,890 votes in Georgia, and 5,229 votes in Arizona, today would've been his second inaugural.
Thanks to tireless organizing in those three states and many others, it's the start of a new era instead.
There's a lot of totally correct talk about how
@StaceyAbrams
was pivotal to winning Georgia. Folks: Stacey & her team were pivotal to flipping Wisconsin too. And every other battleground. They worked with us to build massive, supercharged voter protection teams—starting *early.*
BREAKING Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator says on
@NBCNews
: “All of the ballots have been counted.” Joe Biden has won Wisconsin by 20,697 votes.
Remember the huge anti-stay-at-home protest in Wisconsin? 72 people have now tested positive here after indicating that they attended a “large event.” Hard to think of many others.
I never thought I’d write this, but I’d like to personally thank Ted Cruz for helping drive the biggest fundraising day of the cycle for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
BREAKING—as in breaking democracy: a truly shocking & naked power grab underway in Wisconsin. Dems won every statewide race this Nov. Now, the GOP unveiled sweeping bills to straightjacket the Gov & AG, stomp on early voting, & lock in power on state Sup Court. Votes THIS TUE. 1/
Two 4-3 WI Supreme Court rulings in a row denying attempts to overturn the election and hand Wisconsin to Trump. This was why Trump tried so hard to win the WI Sup Ct race this spring. Vast thanks to everyone who worked so hard to elect a Justice who believes in democracy.
This isn’t a prediction. It isn’t a hint. It’s just a note. And my note is, this election was a release valve for twelve years of Democratic rage in Wisconsin about Republicans rigging our state and smashing our democracy—and then using that power to rip away our rights.
On Tuesday, Wisconsinites went to the polls in thousands of local elections. Republicans wanted a wave. They didn’t get one. In community after community, Dems fought back, and—in so many places, though not everywhere—won. A thread of appreciation. 1/
Make a deal with yourself.
If Roy Moore wins today, you’ll do everything in your power to take away GOP control of Congress in 2018.
And if Doug Jones wins today, you’ll do everything in your power to take away GOP control of Congress in 2018.
Green Bay and Kenosha results are in. Biden is now up in Wisconsin by roughly 20,600 votes. That number could wobble a bit, but there's no realistic path for Trump to pull ahead.
Biden has won more votes any prez candidate in WI history.
Folks: Joe Biden just won Wisconsin.
The Koch network just announced that it plans to spend $300-$400 million on the 2018 midterms. This should light a fire under anyone on our side who is tempted to take these elections for granted.
Nothing's inevitable. We have to fight for every vote.
Jared Kushner didn’t send in a note for Harvard’s 15th Anniversary Report. But flip to the page where his entry would go and you’ll find this, the end of a note from an alphabetically adjacent classmate.
STATEMENT: Tonight, despite the GOP’s savage attempt to suppress votes and steal Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election, Judge Jill Karofsky prevailed. In an election that should never have taken place in person, it’s a victory for justice—and democracy.
Seriously. Don’t just fret about Trump firing Mueller. Be ready.
We have a plan. 400+ protests nationwide, within hours. Go to RIGHT NOW and pre-RSVP so you’ll get updates re time & location. And then share this & recruit 10 friends to sign up.
THREAD: The Biden win over Trump in Wisconsin is the result of thousands of heroes, working in the trenches for years.
To everyone who made this possible—THANK YOU. Here's one story of the path to this victory, and some of the people & groups involved. Everything mattered.
You met Zach Wahls as the Eagle Scout with two moms who, still a teenager, testified for marriage equality to the Iowa state legislature. Tonight, just now, he became an Iowa State Senator himself. Congrats,
@ZachWahls
. You've done us proud.
Mitch McConnell: "I thought the decision I made not to fill the Supreme Court vacancy when Justice Scalia died was the most consequential decision I’ve made in my entire public career."
He's right. And because of it, let's make this year his final one as majority leader.
Absentee ballots are still being tallied in Milwaukee, Kenosha, and other cities. Based on everything we’ve seen, those ballots will decisively favor Biden. Green Bay hasn’t reported *any* results yet. When all votes are counted, we’re confident that Joe Biden will win Wisconsin.
NEW: The Democratic Party of Wisconsin just put up this guide to where to find curbside voting & absentee ballot dropoffs in your city. Can you RT this far & wide?
Senators are heading home today and tomorrow—including Collins and Murkowski. They’re on recess through Aug 13. Folks, this is the time to make it clear: NO on Kavanaugh. Airports, town halls, farmer’s markets, office drop-bys—it’s time to show up.
POLL: 55% of Wisconsinites think Ron Johnson should resign.
52% say he should be expelled from the Senate.
60% say he should be replaced.
Ron Johnson betrayed his oath to the Constitution. Wisconsinites want accountability.
Thread: 1/
I'm going to log off and put my kids to bed and pretend that all of this is happening in some other universe for a little while. When I get back, I'm going to introduce you to some of the specific Wisconsin state legislators who allowed this atrocity to happen.
Wisconsinites: Vote for Biden-Harris. But don’t *just* vote for Biden-Harris. Vote for a Democrat for Congress, for State Senate, and for State Assembly. Be Robin Vos’s worst nightmare. Pass it on.
<Drum roll>
Wisconsin has 2440 known coronavirus cases and likely 10x that many unconfirmed, many of them asymptomatic & infectious. Tomorrow, they'll mingle with thousands of others at polling places thanks to...
THESE REPUBLICAN STATE LEGISLATORS!
<applause, cheers>
1/
So, Twitter friends, some exciting personal news: my wife and I are having a baby. Our third. A boy. Soon. Like, just pulled up at the hospital.
Will keep you posted.
Ron Johnson *told* a former GOP county party chair that he knew Biden won. He’s knowingly, deliberately voting against democracy and the Constitution. This is disqualifying for any office that requires taking the oath.
Until now, your income that paid for public schools (via state & local taxes) wasn’t taxed by the federal government. GOP bill ends that. Instead, they’re now creating a tax break for *private* school tuition.
WOW: By a 5–4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court reverses a lower court order extending the deadline for mail-in ballots in Wisconsin. All four liberals dissent.
The conservative majority just effectively threw out thousands of ballots. Incredible.
Link coming soon.
My opinion on the amazing anonymous NY Times op-ed by a Trump staffer is that Brett Kavanaugh, if confirmed, would threaten the health, freedoms, and rights of every American: that Murkowski, Collins, & all Ds should vote against; and that you should call the Senate: 202-224-3121
THREAD: Democracy won in Wisconsin tonight. The GOP thought they had this election fully stolen. Trump leaned in personally. But voters, who don't like being suppressed, rose up. Organizers worked magic. Here's the story. (Also: donate! )
Super bad, under the radar thing: Tom Brunell, a Republican political scientist who literally wrote a book titled "Redistricting and Representation: Why competitive elections are bad for America," might be appointed to oversee the census—which shapes redistricting—THIS MONTH.
Infuriating. Dems negotiated with Rs in good faith for four months and reached a bipartisan deal to protect Dreamers. Trump rejected it. Nobody should report on Trump accusing Dems of killing DACA without noting the truth in the headline.
ALERT: The Trump administration has a plan to drastically curtail protests in DC, shutting down space in front of White House, charging massive fees, & banning stages & sound systems for rapid-response demonstrations. Deadline for comments? Monday, Oct 15:
As Ari says: the power grabs in WI and MI should be a massive national story. Every indication I’ve seen is that when people know what’s going on, they’re outraged—but few know. Democracy dies in darkness. Who do you hope covers this? Tag in replies.
In 2016 lame duck NC GOP legislature brazenly stripped power from newly elected Dem governor before he took office
Now GOP doing same thing in WI & MI
This is straight out of banana republic & should be huge national story
WOW—knocking on doors in Stevens Point, I just met (through her porch door) a woman who thought she couldn’t vote bc she’d just tested positive for COVID. I explained curbside voting—and now she’s headed to the polls!
Questions? Call our voter protection hotline: 608-336-3232
A right-wing lawsuit triggered a 200,000-voter purge in Wisconsin yesterday. But we still have same-day registration in this state. So now our job is to organize harder than they can suppress.
Hey everyone: if you're thinking about making a long-shot run to challenge a Republican for office, let tonight be the kick in the pants you need. Go for it.
August 12, 2019 marks exactly one year since Trump called for a boycott of Harley-Davidson, which is something he'd probably want Wisconsinites to forget.
Retweet if you'd prefer that we remember.
America, remember. It wasn't just Donald Trump who inflicted needless harm on millions of people to advance a racist agenda, and finally caved. It was also Mitch McConnell.
Furious about Kavanaugh? Don’t just sit there. We need your power. The truth is, there’s a LOT you can do. We may only have four days until the final vote, and your voice is needed now. This is a thread about what’s coming, and how you can help. Please follow along and share. 1/
The long, dark night of ultra-partisan gerrymandering is over, and a new day for democracy now dawns in the Badger State.
The stroke of Governor Evers’s pen today marks the end of the shameful period that began in 2011, when Republican lawmakers—bound in secrecy by nondisclosure…
BREAKING: I've promised from the beginning that I will always try to do the right thing. Today, I'm keeping that promise and I'm signing fair maps for Wisconsin.
Wisconsin, for the first time in over a decade, we will not have some of the most gerrymandered maps in America.
Tonight—a Friday night—in Louisville, Kentucky, *1000 people* turned out for a rally against the GOP tax bill. Don't tell me the public isn't up in arms against this monster. 1/
At first, when Kavanagh was nominated, top GOP senators said that “it just seems to be common sense” that all his White House papers should be released.
Then, on July 24, they met with Trump’s counsel. Turned on a dime. Now, releasing the papers would be “a bridge too far.” 1/
Last night, the state of the State Of The Union was strong.
If you want to know how the speech played with base Democrats in a battleground state, this about sums it up: halfway through the speech, Portage County Democratic Party co-chair Gary Hawley leaned over to me and said,…
2,499 votes.
That's how close the GOP came supermajorities in both chambers of Wisconsin's state legislature.
If they'd won, they could've rewritten election rules—and perhaps overturned the 2024 presidential.
To Dem Assembly Leader
@RepGreta
, candidates, volunteers—THANK YOU!
Here's my take on the Woodward book: Brett Kavanaugh is an extremist whose confirmation would end Roe, kill protections for pre-existing conditions, and dismantle worker's rights & enviro protections, and the Senate switchboard number is 202-224-3121.
Update: Delaware came through. Protests are now planned in all 50 states. 523 of them. Hundreds of thousands of participants. Make your plan now to march on June 30, and find your nearest march here:
EXPLOSIVE energy to
#KeepFamiliesTogether
: 300,000+ RSVPs for 450+ protests across the US, covering every state plus DC except Delaware.
125 co-sponsoring groups listed on DC event page:
Find/start a protest (c'mon, Delawareans!)
If you think that this is what should be happening today, you’re either uninformed about coronavirus, a nihilistic partisan, or a Republican-appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States
(or a combo)
So, uh, looks like Kavanaugh lied to the Senate during 2006 judicial confirmation hearings—even just going by the tiny fraction of documents that are publicly available. Said he knew nothing about Bush torture & rendition. But: was emailed talking points.
Trump could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and his supporters in Congress would accuse anyone who said “Hey, Trump just shot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue!” of bias.
If Dems improve compared to 2016 nationwide as much as Hiral Tipirneni did tonight in
#AZ08
, 2018 is gonna be a landslide. But it’ll only happen if we all work our butts off. Commit. You in?
I've seen enough: Janet Protasiewicz defeats Daniel Kelly for Wisconsin Supreme Court. The result flips ideological control of the court from conservative to liberal, a huge victory for the pro-choice side.
BREAKING: A Trump advisor told the WI GOP that “Traditionally it’s always been Republicans suppressing votes in places”—& "It’s going to be a much bigger program, a much more aggressive program, a much better-funded program" in 2020.
Give to fight back:
Today felt like July 27, 2017. Like this morning, I woke up that morning with a deep sense of dread. Thought—this is the day the ACA and Medicaid die. That night, McCain turned his thumb down. Tonight, votes got counted. Against immense odds, people won both fights. Never quit.
You might remember the stunning video of the teenager speaking to the Iowa state legislature about his two moms in 2011, where the GOP was trying to ban same-sex marriage.
Marriage equality won. And tonight, 27-year-old
@ZachWahls
won his primary for the Iowa State Senate.
Another one of Jared Kushner’s college classmates in the 15th Anniversary Report:
“I, for one, am actually glad that our Class of ‘03 finally has a real, live fascist among us. Who says Harvard isn’t diverse?”
... and that’s just the beginning.
Every one of these dots represents a protest against family separation tomorrow. Yeah. There are a lot of dots.
There's a march within driving distance of you. Find it. Sign up. Recruit friends. Fill your car.
This is the part where we show up & FIGHT.
