Chloe and I are thrilled to welcome the arrival of our son Elijah Bloom Wahls. We are immensely grateful for the world-class care he received thanks to our wonderful doula, the incredible University of Iowa Health Care team, and my very supportive family here in Iowa City.
IOWA — Remember that young man from Iowa who spoke to the Iowa legislature a few years ago about growing up with two moms? Hi. That was me — and today, I'm announcing my campaign to join the Iowa legislature. I hope you'll support our campaign.
We talk about coronavirus constantly & yet it *still* feels like we don’t talk nearly enough about how 90,000+ Americans have died in the last 3 months & that number (which is more than a number; it’s lives lost & hundreds of thousands of people grieving) will absolutely go up.
Well, for one thing, President Trump did not win an "Electoral College landslide" - he had the third smallest margin of victory since 1980. The only two smaller wins were both by George W. Bush.
I was literally in the room of my Iowa town mayor's Holiday Bowl watch party when this photo was taken. Biden was neither hiding nor alone nor in "the heart of Delaware" when this photo was taken...
Unreal. Friend of mine from high school just received nearly $1,000 as a part of a settlement because Donald Trump’s businesses stole tips from service workers.
Hello Twitter! Remember the young man who spoke to the Iowa legislature about growing up with two moms?
Hi 👋 That was me. Today, I’m the Iowa Senate Minority Leader seeking re-election. Please join our work to rebuild a Democratic majority.

Wow. Tide is shifting *very* quickly. 22% of Republicans strongly support impeachment, 10% of Republicans somewhat support impeachment. Only 49% of Republicans oppose impeachment.
If elected to the Iowa Senate this fall, I will introduce Automatic Voter Registration legislation — we should be expanding participation in our democracy, not rolling it back.
BREAKING: Supreme Court, in a 5–4 decision by Justice Alito, allows Ohio (and other states) to purge voters from the rolls for their failure to vote. A massive blow to the Motor Voter Act that will likely lead to a huge amount of disenfranchisement.
Shortly after the video of my 2011 speech went viral, I saw this funny headline from
@ChloeAngyal
.
I emailed her with the subject line "Marriage proposal?" to set up an interview.
Never would've guessed the ensuing correspondence would eventually lead to our actual engagement.
It was only four years ago that this country legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, and tonight an openly gay candidate delivered a top performance in a debate to become President of the United States. Great closing statement from Mayor
@PeteButtigieg
.
I am running for Iowa Senate District 37, which is my home. It is where I grew up, where I went to high school, where I got my first job, and where I started my first business.
STUDENTS AND FELLOW YOUNG PEOPLE — I was a young activist for LGBTQ rights who helped lead a movement that overturned the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on LGBT members and leaders. Here’s what I learned.
1/ Seven years ago today, I woke up early, put on a suit and tie, and went to my classes at the University of Iowa. I had a speech to give later that night in Des Moines. I had no idea that it would change my life forever.
Well, at least
@realkatiejow
deleted the now infamous "Red Robin" tweet. Still, clearly not somebody who should be on a school board. You can donate to her opponent
@NVBryanW
below. Hopefully we don't crash his site!
@WilsonSchool
I am going to attend my final classes remotely, be on campus a few days a month, and finish my degree from Iowa. Funnily enough, the primary election is the same day as commencement... so I won't be able to walk, but I will be able to run.
A friend pointed out that
@AndrewYang
talks about the acquisition of manufactured housing communities by wealthy investors in his book
#TheWarOnNormalPeople
- not something I heard him discuss on the stump, but it is a big issue in Iowa. Thanks for raising awareness
@AndrewYang
!!
And finally - well, yeah. Democrats have been talking about impeachment since before Trump was elected.. Because most of us expected he would abuse the power of his office! Why? Idk, maybe because he asked for Russia to hack Hillary's email on national television.
@runforsomething
No state in the country had a bigger swing from Obama in 2012 to Trump in 2016 than Iowa did. Iowa Republicans took over our state legislature and immediately began to dismantle our state's social foundation.
It is empirically false that wind turbines do not work in cold weather. With windchill, it was a high of -19 in central Iowa on Monday and Iowa's wind turbines were working fine.
I am going to listen to women. I am going to hold myself and the men around me accountable for our behavior. For our generation, this is a basic qualification, but I feel it is one that is important to name and to say out loud.
On health care: our state is experiencing a mental health crisis, and Iowa ranks dead last in the county — 51st! — in terms of public psychiatric beds per capita. Suicide rates are spiking in our rural communities, and Republicans are shutting down mental health facilities.
Today, I'm sharing my plan to transition to
#MedicareForAll
. In my first term, we will reverse Trump’s sabotage of the ACA, lower drug prices, lower the Medicare age to 50 and create a true Medicare for All option—and fully transition to
#MedicareForAll
.
Currently at the Iowa City MLK Unity March and there are a ton of.... Andrew Yang signs reading
#HumanityFirst
. Dr King was iirc a supporter of universal basic income.
The problem is not that Arizona and Nevada are taking "so long" to count. All states are still counting. The reason we don't have an answer in Arizona and Nevada is simply that it's close. That's all!
Maybe because he hired to be his campaign manager a guy who had decades of shady dealings with authoritarian governments. (That guy is now in prison, by the way!)
Democrats should not apologize for expecting that Donald Trump would engage in impeachable behavior. Because that is exactly what he has done: He tried to extort Ukraine into supporting his reelection using the full force of the presidency and your taxpayer money.
@PeteButtigieg
You can lose a mom or dad through death, abandonment/abuse, or by design (being intentionally brought into the world via invitro & surrogacy to be a child for a same-sex couple). It is wrong for us adults to pretend that loss of a loving mom (or dad) won’t affect the child.
I was fortunate enough to graduate debt-free from the University of Iowa, for which I am incredibly grateful. We need *more* people graduating with *less* debt — Iowa Republicans are pushing the exact opposite.
Caitlin Clark - famously - does a lot of work with the Coralville Food Pantry. You should follow her example and reverse your decision about summer ebt.
The success of impeachment is all going to come down to whether or not the public believes Trump was pressuring Ukraine. Seems pretty straightforward to me. Also underscores the need to illustrate other examples of Trump using his power to extort other people—establish a pattern.
Love that answer from Mayor
@PeteButtigieg
about making net-zero emission farms a symbol of American pride and greatness. It won't be easy, but the important things never are.
Just realized that almost *exactly* 11 years ago at this very moment, I was testifying to the Iowa House about marriage equality and its impact on my family.
BREAKING NEWS: Iowa announces $200,000,000 broadband program made possible by President Joe Biden, Representative Cindy Axne, and every Democrat who voted for the American Rescue Plan.
Every Iowa Republican in our US delegation voted AGAINST this $200M investment in broadband.
Medicaid privatization has been a disaster that is costing our state hundreds of millions of dollars. It is hurting tens of thousands of people, including right here in our district.
SECOND — I am currently a student at
@WilsonSchool
, finishing my master's degree in public policy. Princeton is allowing me to finish my degree while I am living and campaigning in Iowa.
I am running because I believe all Iowans need a seat at the table. That absolutely means more women running, it means more young people, it means more people of color.
On Education instead of making college *more* affordable for Iowans, Republicans are going in exactly the opposite direction, slashing $55M from higher education.
Two quick notes about how we're going to run this campaign. FIRST, I am incredibly conscientious of the fact that I am a straight white guy running in the
#MeToo
moment.
IOWANS—If you are planning to drop off your absentee ballot in person, you MUST drop it off at your County Auditor's office, NOT your local polling place.
Here's a fact you won't hear tonight from Kim Reynolds:
There are fewer Iowans working today than when she took office nearly five years ago.
#ReynoldsWorkforceCrisis
Don't be distracted: Governor Reynolds rejected $95,000,000 in federal support to keep our schools safe. We are in this dangerous delta surge because of the choices made by Iowa Republicans to reject aid, embrace vaccine skepticism, and ignore our responsibilities to each other.
President Biden is taking dangerous and unprecedented steps to insert the federal government even further into our lives while dismissing the ability of Iowans and Americans to make healthcare decisions for themselves.
Further, Iowa Republicans dramatically restricted the growth of K12 spending which hurts both students and teachers. On *top* of that, Iowa GOP gutted collective bargaining for public employees, including public school teachers.
We have to restore the growth in K12 spending, we have to protect everybody's right to form a union, and we have to recommit ourselves to building a strong social foundation for all Iowans.
After several legislative receptions tonight, on my way back to my hotel, I walked alongside a man who appeared to be homeless, pushing a bicycle with a deflated tire, towing a small cart filled with all his earthly possessions. It is currently -32F in Des Moines.
It appears that the outcome of Georgia — and thus the presidency — may be decided by voters of the congressional district held by the late John Lewis.
Could not be more appropriate.
Iowa Republicans got really upset when we warned that their private school voucher scheme would lead to the closure of schools in small town Iowa.
Unfortunately, we were right.
In these next five months, I will be traveling the district, visiting Solon and Tipton and Mechanicsville and Wilton and more — meeting with folks, listening to people’s stories, and hearing about your concerns and what you think our team’s priorities should be if we win.
