As I sit in the top row of the bleachers to watch my son wrestle, I continue to be disappointed w/parents behavior at HS events. U are not the coach & the underpaid official who gave up his nite, isn’t trying to cheat. Sit back and enjoy the moment, it wil be over b4 u know it!
If HS coaches are constantly putting pressure on athletes to attend their HS sport specific summer team events, aren’t they to blame for specialization in HS sports? Some HS coaches need to ask themselves if they are part of the problem or the solution. Stop blaming others!
If you are a parent of child involved with youth sports and you are not a coach..Sit in your car until practice is over! If you sit in the bleachers and shout instructions at your child, the coaches dislike you and your child thinks you are annoying!
Attended 20+ HS gms this yr. If you can pass, catch, pivot, value the ball and play off two feet, you can start for any of the teams I watched. Youngsters need to get in the gym and work on their skill set.
Parents & AAU hoop ‘coaches’ that play more games than practice sessions-You’re not a coach. You’re a Chaperone! The HS game is suffering at an incredible rate. Contact your local HS coach for advice, they will help!

Last home match of Drew HS career. Team wins 1st conf title in 71 yrs. Undefeated career in home matches & more importantly Undefeated interacting with all who look up to him. Proud of the way he helped change a culture and a reminder for all athletes that you are being watched!
9u baseball update. Walk up music. 7 parents in dugout. 1 parent bitching at ump. 1 parent grabbing a kids face mask after strikeout. 1 parent down foul line during love play. Photo op after game with rings/banners. Parents packing kids bat bags in dugout. Stay Awesome Parents
People hv asked how my son wrestles coming from a hoops background where dad/uncle played/coach. It’s never been about me or what sports I wanted my kids involved in. I think it’s important to expose kids to different activities because you never know where their passion may lie
No reason the district should notify the students of school cancellation in advance...These kids need to get their ass up at 530am and patiently watch the ticker at bottom of the screen to see if their school shows up and then they get to go back to bed!
#howthingsusedtobe
Hell of a game with dudes from both teams who left it out there. What’s amazing is you never heard a DU coach/player talk abt being short handed or make excuses. Those guys battled their asses off in a tough spot & nvr flinched when adversity hit. 2 best teams in state to watch
Pay IHSAA a fee to officiate. Purchase gear for hundreds of $. Wear on vehicle attending gms w/out mileage comp. Hv administrators treat you like you are 2nd class when show up. Listen to fans bitch at you for hours Wait wks/months to get paid. Wonder why shortage of officials?
Youth basketball has allowed ‘for profit’ organizations to ruin the game. Continuous clock, limited fouls/violations called, full ct press, zone & shooting 2 for 1 foul shots 🤦♂️ Solution: Play 3vs3 -diminish the overemphasis of winning tournaments. Adopt USA Basketball Rules!!
Truly mind blowing the high quality basketball goals in driveways/parks that get zero use. Do young kids even know what an individual workout is? Parents/Chaperones should explain the value of self driven players to these kids and get the hell out of their way!
Attended daughter’s 4th grade hoops gms over weekend. One of the highlights (or lowlights) of weekend was an official tossing two ignorant parents for relentlessly complaining abt calls. Should be Zero Tolerance Rule in all gyms. Mom & Dad it ain’t abt you!
Signing Day is a good reminder of how difficult it is to receive a scholarship at any level. Youth parents should take a look at their local HS to see how many athletes signed “D1”. The reality is they aren’t going “D1” so enjoy the present & the future will take care of itself!
For all the youngsters who give up on their dream due to physical stature. Anything is possible! This is what 15 tackles looks like from a 140lb safety. Proud of his toughness & passion. His ultra competitiveness has allowed him to contribute to the greatest team sport around
@SethOnHoops
Actually they have plenty of places to go at a lower level and would be welcomed. But their egos and bad advice get in the way of reality.
How did all these high school districts afford the play clocks at all the football stadiums? And how did they overcome the daunting task of finding someone to operate it?

I am still like a kid in a candy store when that
@Eastbay
magazine shows up in my mailbox. If you didn’t circle all the sneakers you wanted and hand it to your parents you’re lying 🤥 .

After watching a weekend of youth basketball, it is imperative that
@USABYouth
rules are mandated. What I witnessed isn’t basketball and is a disservice to the game.
When I was 10yrs old this 👇🏻is what many cared abt after games at St Ed’s fields in Fort Dodge, IA. We competed our asses off... I don't recall my parents attending many games or hearing a word from them other than play hard and be a good teammate.

Got my weekly dose of watching youth girls coaches press, foul and continuously run multiple defenders to the ball. You are truly amazing coaches according to your record (or some website ranking you’re proud of) but winning has outweighed the importance of fundamentals.
#yousuck
Thankful for the coaching opportunity to join my brother & great staff on the sidelines at
@GVVikingFB
Its been a hell of a fall camp and can’t wait to watch our guys compete tomorrow night. Let’s get it!

Fortunate to be a part of a perfect fall football season
@gvvikings
and sprint to Omaha to watch my man
@woodley28
get his first collegiate wrestling win. Life is good!
Be a great day when state of Iowa attempts to get the best teams in the state hoops tournament. Rewarding teams based on geographic location, makes zero sense. And add a shot clock while your at it. TIA
All Youth basketball should be 6 vs 6. Absolute genius concept by the state of IA Girls Union back in the day. Parents wouldn’t like it because Jane /Johnny wld be exclusively on defense for extended time but fundamentals wld improve drastically. Two dribble rule is phenomenal
On way to the gym this am w/my 10yr old son JJ for ind. hoops workout.
@RossPeterson_
talking about Bob Knight on radio and JJ asked who Bob Knight was and I said Knight was coach who held all his players accountable and was really hard on them. JJ says “Just like you Dad” 😂
Dropped daughter off at softball practice... on the way out, I witnessed 9 dads at a little league baseball practice. Hopefully it was just bring a parent to practice day?...
#smh
Youth basketball game. 4th grade. Team pressed for 40 mins. 1 team foul called. ONE. 2 total fouls for the other team and Zero violations. One official didn’t leave his own baseline. What in the actual f&$k is going on these days.
Provide different opportunities for your youngsters, it’s not about you- your playing days are over (if you ever played). Kids can develop a tremendous amount of discipline and competitiveness in many different sports and it never hurts them to be a role player on various teams.
Drew had to injury default out of tournament following his rd 1 win with a head injury. Not the way he envisioned his last of 5 state tournaments. His aspirations of being on top of the podium will have to wait for another day...Thx to everyone who reached out to check on him.
As a 9 yr old in Fort Dodge IA these were my childhood idols! Me & my brother Matt never missed a gm these dudes played in HS and on TV in college. Been coaching/watching hoops for a long time and this team is still the most exciting team I have seen in Iowa HS.
@WadeLookingbill
9yr old softball. Mom at backstop recording daughter pitching. Drops her personal stat sheet and rushes to dugout between innings. Yells at husband who is coaching to take phone and show daughter what doing wrong. Kid care more abt pitching mechanics or where post gm meal is?!!
Takedown with :12 left in reg to force OT. Wins with Pin in OT over top ranked wrestler in Class A at 126lbs. Drew gets his 1st Outstanding Wreslter award along with some eye damage. Keep Grinding!
Sadly, it’s not about the kids anymore. It’s all about the delusional parents. Can’t tell you how many times I have heard “We need to travel to get better competition or we want to see where we stack up in bigger cities”
All of this from
@FredBowenBooks
is golden:
1. Kids should play multiple sports.
2. Traveling to tournaments isn't that fun for kids.
3. No disrespect but: your kid is almost surely *not* an elite Division 1 talent.
His sign off column:
Stalling to defeat: Minnesota school scores four points in section basketball game. (Plus video of a more exciting game between the two schools involved.)
#mshsl
If this Iowa team had as much urgency sprinting back in transition as they do complaining about officiating, they may not be staring at 0-5 in league play. Multiple effort plays are non-existent with this squad.
Note to College Hoop fans- The FAB 5 ain’t coming out of the tunnel. There will be growing pains w/youthful teams. Enjoy the ride with them and don’t be afraid to support the players/coaches when times are tough.
In this week’s basketball coaching conversation, Drake men’s basketball assistant coach Matt Woodley joins the Basketball Podcast with Chris Oliver to discuss individual and team basketball defense. Link in bio.

Incredible atmosphere at the McLeod Center for
@UNImbb
. Would be amazing if the Cedar Valley supported the program on a consistent basis to create the best home court advantage in the MVC!
I just watched a glorified pickup game with a bunch of PHONY tough guys. Long way to go for both squads to have a chance to play meaningful games in March.
