I’m very surprised to be reading about an apology from UCD President Andrew Deeks, since I haven’t received one or any communication from him on this matter.
Thank you so much for all of the support. I have been overwhelmed by the positive messages, but also by the stories shared from others in similar situations. I sincerely hope this conversation leads to the broader necessary changes in culture, policy & structures in academia.

It’s incredulous that in this past year no plans were discussed with stakeholders & put in place for another potential lockdown. That children & young people w special needs, who are vulnerable, or with parents who are frontline workers can’t be catered is a failure of the system.

This week I cycled to work for the first time - not a big deal for most, but I have been petrified of cycling in the city after getting knocked off my bike years ago.

As a Mayo woman, this makes me so sad.The opinions of a few have thwarted the opportunity to give women seeking refuge a place to live.Yes, direct provision needs to end, but rejecting every accommodation option for these people is not an adequate response
Wait, women returning from maternity leave are excluded from the Temporary COVID19 Wage Subsidy Scheme, even though they are technically employees? And this affects the most vulnerable who only got state payment? Why is it so hard to address women’s rights in this country 😔

This is a great development. State schools shouldn’t advocate any one religion when students & teachers are of a diversity of faiths or none. Schools can still support faith development & spirituality, just not for one governing religion. Well done ETB for acting on this 👏
Well done to these UCD Student Union officers for speaking out about the sexual violence that is happening on campus. It is blatantly clear that the current processes for disclosure & reporting of sexual harassment & assault are woefully inadequate. 1/n
As the school term begins I’d like to recognise all of the schools, principals & teachers who are preparing to look after their most vulnerable students who have become homeless over the summer or are dealing with extreme poverty. Thank you for looking after our young people.
I don't want anyone else, student or staff, to go through the same experiences I did. I hope that speaking publicly will begin a conversation that helps address this problem in third level institutes across Ireland & helps support other victims to report their experiences. 14/n

Was reminded today of the superpower of having a ‘teacher voice’. Saw two young lads with a spray can graffiting a wall (not in an artistic way). Stopped, asked them to stop & put the can in the bin - which they duly did!
The experience of working with teenagers is invaluable.
This is a dreadful & disappointing outcome. Points to the fact that majority of politicians really have no idea how important getting supports during maternity leave is or how impossible it is to find a crèche place for a 6 month old. Women’s issues ignored again in the Dáil.
It is hugely disappointing that TD's have voted by 80 to 64 to accept a government amendment to the motion. The motion has been carried which means that maternity leave will not be extended by 3 months for mothers whose maternity leave was affected by COVID

Found out that carers in crèche aren’t getting paid when they’re excluded from work due to Covid in class/pod. This may not be all crèches, but imagine your wages reduced by 25% if a child you take care of is sick.
Do we expect these people, already low paid, to live on fresh air?
I feel very strongly about this and agree that religious faith formation should be taught outside school hours. All children, of all faiths & none, should have an equal experience of school and curricula.

I'll be voting Yes to remove 41.2. Some say it doesn't make a difference - if so, what's the problem removing it? I've always felt an unease that my decision to work outside the home doesn't align with the constitution. I'd like to remove that for my daughter (due soon).
#voteYes
For anyone wondering about the upcoming referendum, I'd highly recommend reading this book for background on how article 41.2 made its way into our constitution & the reactions of women at the time. 👇
Harassment and sexual harassment contribute to the lack of gender equality of women in academia. In Ireland 24% of high-level Professor posts were held by women, compared to 51% women Lecturers which are entry level academic posts in the university sector (DES, 2017) 5/n
It’s interesting how Diarmad Martin gets a full interview on

without any balance of opinion. What’s seen as ‘sin’ should not always equate to criminality. Our constitution should align with UN human rights & trust women to make their own decisions

I am so thankful for my husband, friends, family & colleagues who supported me throughout this whole process. I am very lucky to have such a strong support network & I would not have followed through on the complaint to the Gardai or formal university complaint without them 13/n
This is also a huge issue for students in Ireland, with between 50-75% of undergrad students having reported experiencing sexual harassment in their first 3 years of study (Burke et al., 2020). This correlates with other similar studies internationally (e.g. 51% in Australia) 4/n

This is very disappointing.
If the priority is to keep schools open, all school workers should be vaccinated as quickly as possible. They’ve already done this in other EU countries (such as Estonia) who say schools are a priority & are acting on that statement.
#edchatie
I'm not surprised. The initial response from teacher and SNA reps is one of dismay. They had been assured that they would be in the first 30% to be vaccinated. Many cannot social distance in their work, and teaching - esp primary teaching - is a very young profession.
Neither the Minister nor the Department have given any indication that their actions this past year have centred on students. There seems to be no consideration for the welfare or education of young people in this country. As an educator I think this is unacceptable. 2/
I’ll be voting Yes for all the women the state has let down since 1983 (170,000+) and for the couples who are delighted to find out they’re expecting today, but will get a diagnosis that their baby won’t survive in 20 weeks time. They should be supported at home

We are now left in a situation where plans are being made on the fly & in an emergency. This will not benefit any learners and we’ll be years making up for lost experiences of students this past 12 months. The lack of leadership & organisation is beyond embarrassing. 3/
This does not mean that addressing gender inequities at senior positions will address the problem of sexual harassment, but points to the fact that gender harassment is another cause of the gender inequity at these senior levels. 6/n
