Disappointing that a former health sec would take this position. No woman I have met has ever taken this decision lightly, at 5 weeks or 20 weeks, regardless of indication. I’d suggest Tory leadership candidates focus on politics, not telling women what to do with their bodies.

To be very, very clear: the NHS did have space. Lots of capacity, it turned out. This became clear within weeks of the height of lockdown. It was a decision to keep cancer patients away then. And it is a choice now.

Lots of challenge with emergency access and flow at the moment - so important that we look at those things that are in our gift to control. An interesting study from 2016 that suggests by discharging 80% patients by 11am hospitals can improve flow and reduced occupancy

Semmelweis was ridiculed by the entire medical community. They were appalled and insulted to hear that they were being blamed for the death of these women, and went after Semmelweis, questioning his knowledge and convincing the medical community that he was insane.

The more I work in the NHS the more I see how the artificial boundaries get in the way - primary, acute secondary and community care are all a continuum, and important that they all work to meet a patients needs - not remain in their silos, driven by their own priorities.

660 people through our single-site ED @NorthMidNHS yesterday with more than 120 @Ldn_Ambulance conveyances to offload; four out of five patients seen, treated and discharged or admitted in under four hours. I remain in awe at our nursing, medical and admin teams.

In non-COVID news, our @NorthMidNHS radiotherapy team have been approved to deliver SABR - stereotactive ablative radiotherapy for lung primary and single-metastatic disease - potentially meaning fewer doses of radiotherapy for our patients. Well done to all involved!
