I often say to O&G trainees “whilst you may not remember the women you’re caring for, they will remember you forever”. So I was incredibly humbled to receive this today. In these crazy times it’s important to remember the massive responsibility health professionals carry.
Disappointing that a former health sec would take this position. No woman I have met has ever taken this decision lightly, at 5 weeks or 20 weeks, regardless of indication. I’d suggest Tory leadership candidates focus on politics, not telling women what to do with their bodies.

I often catch up with e-mails of an evening - but I'm noticing that I will often get replies pretty quickly. Aware that I'm then driving and reinforcing those behaviours with my teams - so time to stop e-mailing out of hours. People need downtime, not being pinged by the DCEO.
The man who saved more lives than any other physician (in the history of humanity combined) died in a mental institution — unrecognized and shunned by the medical community. He was beaten by guards and died a miserable death.
A timely reminder that Good Medical Practice says doctors should be immunised against common serious communicable diseases (unless otherwise contraindicated).
One thing we can all agree on: the President of the United States getting free-at-the-point-of-delivery healthcare, funded by public taxation, is a great model that US politicians might want to replicate for their whole population

Fascinated that Dr Peter Hilton felt the need to publicly dismiss the challenges faced by younger, ‘largely female' doctors. Resilience shouldn't equate to tolerating bullying or harassment. The focus should be on creating a respectful and inclusive environment.

Bit of personal news - I'm really excited to be joining the outstanding
@UHSussex
as managing director for West Sussex in September - I've been a huge fan of their incredible achievements over the last five years and it's an honour to join the team
A shout out to all the amazing NHS chief operating officers who have spent the last few weeks working around the clock to create capacity and flow in our hospitals and systems to enable our front-line teams to do their job in these unprecedented times. Salut!
Days like today I feel incredibly guilty - supposed to be on leave to spend some quality time with this amazing man (and our daft dog) - Here’s to brilliant understanding non-NHS partners - couldn’t do any of it without you, Ben x

Dropped Maggie at uni in Bristol today. From her new room you can see the room at Bristol Children's Hospital where, 17 years earlier, she spent 6 months fighting for her life against leukaemia.
Tears of joy.
Thank you NHS.
As a doctor subject to GMC regulation, and as an exec healthcare manager, I’d just like to say - the vast majority of doctors and managers I have worked with over my career put patient care first - often in incredibly difficult financial, political and operational climates.
Yesterday we
@NorthMidNHS
had zero confirmed COVID-19 patients for the first time since 6 March. We continue to test and will remain vigilant! I just want to pay a massive tribute to our clinical & operational teams who have met this challenge with skill and compassion

This was lovely to receive. I always say to obstetricians-in-training - “remember, you are privileged to be part of the most important day in someone’s life”.
And I feel old!
2 of the most under-used leadership behaviours - especially in the NHS - are:
(1) the vast majority of people have good intent - always start from that position
(2) when things go wrong it’s usually a process or system that hasn’t delivered - not because someone is malign (1/6)
Some personal news - I am off to

but I’m really looking forward to joining

To be very very clear
@KateAndrs
doesn’t know what she’s talking about. In North Central London we continued all critical cancer treatment as well as urgent surgical work including vascular and transplant. She has made a choice to spread misinformation.
To be very, very clear: the NHS did have space. Lots of capacity, it turned out. This became clear within weeks of the height of lockdown. It was a decision to keep cancer patients away then. And it is a choice now.
To test his theory, he forced his students to wash their hands with chlorinated lime before delivering. The rate of death during childbirth immediately dropped from up to 35% to 1-2% in the ensuing months.

I’m sure I’m about to open a real can of worms, but as a very new consultant I hated working with a very rude anaesthetist and I know it impaired my performance - so it can definitely work the other way round as well.

Lots of challenge with emergency access and flow at the moment - so important that we look at those things that are in our gift to control. An interesting study from 2016 that suggests by discharging 80% patients by 11am hospitals can improve flow and reduced occupancy
Semmelweis was ridiculed by the entire medical community. They were appalled and insulted to hear that they were being blamed for the death of these women, and went after Semmelweis, questioning his knowledge and convincing the medical community that he was insane.

The more I work in the NHS the more I see how the artificial boundaries get in the way - primary, acute secondary and community care are all a continuum, and important that they all work to meet a patients needs - not remain in their silos, driven by their own priorities.
Delighted to find out today I passed my masters dissertation; almost two years after starting, all done. Looking forward to celebrating with colleagues in November at graduation

I’ve been vaccinated to protect myself and others from COVID-19 - the level of protection given has been incredible to see, all healthcare professionals should look at the data and get the jabs - it’s a scientific and moral imperative
@NorthMidNHS
People shouldn’t confuse being kind with being a pushover. Sometimes being kind means giving frank feedback early rather than letting things fester. The NHS needs more kindness!
The story of the Oxford team developing a ventilator is fascinating in The Times - but this bit made me laugh out loud, as it will every other NHS manager in the country....
Just did new doctors induction welcome
@BHR_hospitals

🔹be kind to yourself - no prizes for burn out
🔹be kind to each other - this job is easier with friends
🔹remember why you’re doctors - reconnnect with your UCAS personal statement once in a while

Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was a Hungarian obstetrician practicing in the mid-1800s, years before Louis Pasteur came up with his germ theory and Joseph Lister popularized hand washing.
I have lots of views on this but I’ll just tweet this one - the optics of being a man telling a panel of women what they can and can’t do with their bodies is pretty bad.

Eventually, Semmelweis was fired from his clinic in Vienna and forced to move back to Budapest, Hungary. His ideas continued to be mocked, rejected, and ignored by his colleagues.
