While Milan were winning the Scudetto, Mario Balotelli was scoring five (!) in Adana Demirspor 7-0 v Göztepe in last game of season. This is the fifth 👀

interest in Luis Diaz that highlight reel is great, but he’s a lot more than that. At FCP gone from being impact player to essential starter, scorer of great goals to consistent goalscorer & workrate is excellent (that’s working under Conceição for you)
Spoke to Mario Gomez in a round table at the weekend & he couldn’t have spoken about his former teammate in more glowing terms. Unheralded but a very smart footballer, a leader with real character & resolve

Really impressed by Liverpool signing Fabinho. One of the very best - and smartest - defensive midfielders in Europe, plus Monaco asked PSG for €60m for him last summer. Great start to getting over Saturday & proving it’s the start, not the end, of something.
This is just horrendous. I realise scale comes into it but if half as many people were bothered about what’s going on here and at Scunthorpe as are about VAR, football would be better for it
117-year-old Southend could be liquidated on Wednesday. Under owner Ron Martin, they are staring into abyss.
They’ve had:
▪️ Just 13 players for some games
▪️ 18 winding up petitions since 2009
▪️ Failed stadium project
▪️ Players playing with injury

It's not often you would say north of €100m for a 33-year-old is a bargain, but that's exactly what Cristiano Ronaldo is for Juventus. A player who knows himself better and better and will continue to be the best penalty box player in the world for a while yet.
The only “unsightly” thing here is the contempt shown to a respected writer
@AndyMitten
who is excellent & works his tail off. Also think as a profession journalists are way up our own arses if we think the public could or should give a damn about our little accreditation dramas
Now this is special, even for VAR. Half-time whistle goes in Mainz v Freiburg, players go off, then pen to Mainz given for handball on last action of half. Players called back out, De Blasis scores, players go off again.
If
#NUFC
do end up getting Bruno Guimarães, it's huge. Would provide a lot of what they need in midfield - athleticism, great on the ball, an organiser - and as effective in a team that doesn't have much possession as one that does (

Leverkusen’s act of winning the Bundesliga isn’t just A Good Thing For Football, in Germany and in Europe. They have played exhilarating, daring football all season & are winning it this afternoon in totally fitting fashion
The World Cup has had plenty of great moments so far, but as pleased with Radamel Falcao getting his goal v Poland yesterday as anything. So desperate to be involved four years ago he almost wrecked his career trying to make it. Not sure many have more desire than him.
My new book Football Murals - loads of *beautiful* pictures, with me musing on some of the game's biggest personalities & themes - is out on October 13

Yes, we have maybe been spoiled by the ability to watch a lot of matches consecutively on TV in the UK in recent months, but I’ve still not quite come to terms with City-Dortmund & Real Madrid-Liverpool being on at the same time this evening
There has surely never been a player better named for his team than Étienne Green, the 20-year-old goalkeeper who is making his Saint-Étienne debut at Nîmes this afternoon
It won't be felt anywhere more keenly than Napoli, of course. When you go to a game at San Paolo he's everywhere - on shirts, snack bars, cafés. Everywhere. It's as if he still plays for them. He gave them everything, and they did him.
Whatever you should they be/shouldn't they be thoughts on the resumption of the Bundesliga, the quality of play so far after such a lengthy unscheduled break has been way higher than could have been reasonably expected
Would go easy on criticising PSG, who lost to an outstanding side. One question - do you regret signing permanently if you're Mauro Icardi? Your team is desperate for a goal, you're an incredible finisher & the coach says no thanks?

Sad to see Marco Reus leaving Dortmund, even if it was inevitable. No doubt lots of chat to come on the player he could have been if it wasn't for the injuries, which is the wrong way to see it. Look at the player he actually was *despite* the injuries.
Off to Doha today. Read/heard people for months saying journalists shouldn't be going, which I think totally misunderstands what the work is about. Going in with the same attitude as Brazil or Russia - see with your own eyes, and listen to people whose lives it affects
Incredibly moving tribute to Davide Astori before Fiorentina v Benevento. Can’t remember hearing a silence quite like it in the minutes before a game. Ciao Davide
Also - Estádio do Dragão is a great, great place to have a Champions League final. Still not over how wonderful it is to hear fans in full voice either.
Actually think there's something to be said for this. Happens in France too - if you were banned or weren't there for the original fixture, you can't play in the rearranged one
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl wants the Premier League to consider preventing January signings from playing in rearranged fixtures.
“We should think about it because of the integrity of the league."

RIP Diego Armando Maradona. The first time I ever realised that the greatest footballer in the world was a thing. Watching him as a kid it felt as if he'd been dropped from another planet & watching the old footage today, it doesn't feel much different.
One of the things that makes the NBA so great is that the protagonists are socially engaged. An understanding that sport is an enriching part of life but not more important than life itself - & a will to meaningfully show that rather than just type out a few hashtags

Very interesting CL draw. Happy if you're Barcelona, City, Liverpool. Also two best defences facing each other in Atleti & Juve = goals galore from last 8 onwards
So loud from start to finish, pyro, the underdogs fighting tooth & nail & finally a 22-y-o academy graduate coming off the bench to score an injury-time winner. Yep, the Skånederby really did it for me (& a bonus meet up with the brilliant

Really important French league properly investigate Neymar's complaints of racism. Did such a horrendously bad job of dealing with the abuse Balotelli received at Nice & a repeat would be intolerable.

Interesting suggestion in today's L'Equipe that Pochettino has a hand in this, placing Mbappé at back post when defending corners to set up just this kind of counter
So, so good from Chelsea. Tonight's performance totally in keeping with the consistency of their displays in the CL knockout stages. Individuals playing way beyond what many thought they were capable of under Tuchel. Well deserved 👏👏

João Félix to Atlético would be absolutely huge. Totally changes the whole dynamic of their rebuild. Also worth noting the extra financial flexibility afforded by him replacing Griezmann - x 8/10 his Benfica wage & you’re still only paying 1/3 or 1/4 of AG’s salary.
Amazes me how many people don't understand that the erosion of local media is incredibly damaging to democracy. Having dedicated local pros who understand specialist issues to hold the untrustworthy to account will always be vital
