Though it's often said that the history of capitalism is Eurocentric, few have attempted to rewrite it from a non-Eurocentric perspective. Historian Andrew B. Liu rises to the challenge with "Tea War: A History of Capitalism in China and India."

My book was just published. It's about the tea trade but also about: China, India, labor, ideology, and writing capitalism's history in Asia and the postcolonial world. I'll be posting some more about it soon - since there are no Steph Curry games rn.

imagine being a student elsewhere in the world trying to do a school year by logging on in the middle of the night -- would ruin your brain and probably all social relationships. would kinda have to be crazy not to drop out.

Put aside the book for a second to foreground a close reading of Marx’s Capital (and its many drafts) that hopefully helps students rethink established economic history models and also think about capitalism in light of modern China, South Asia, and global history more broadly.

We asked @andybliu to write about how his new book "Tea War" (on the development of capitalism in India and China) forces us to revisit Marx's Capital with fresh eyes. Not to be missed!

“The popular framing of capitalism’s origin story—that it began in northwest Europe and then spread to the rest of the world—doesn’t hold up against a closer, more textured examination of plantation life in south and east Asia.”

gonna be so many armchair psychology takes about playing dumb, crumbling under pressure, etc. etc. but to me it's obvious that the stars in this game had no legs by the end of the game. saw it happening in g3 and g4 too, gonna be a factor going forward.

@DanielDenvir @badler being European helps i think -- eg, ft also treats China seriously as a capitalist superpower instead of the weird civilizational caricature you get in nyt/wp or most US press.

whatever technology they use to pluck baby spinach leaves from their stems -- they can't do that for chinese greens? like a bag of stemless water spinach/kongxincai or pea shoots/doumiao? would pay a lot of money for those. is this too bourgeois a thought?
