To, whoever graffitied this outside our school today, you did nothing more than provide a few social subjects classes with a lesson starter…
You see, we don’t tolerate sectarian abuse and death threats! Nor will we ever turn a blind eye to hatred and prejudice…
I can’t think of a time when the teaching profession has been so shamelessly ignored, undervalued and misunderstood.
It feels utterly criminal and I know I’m not alone in thinking this! Thoughts with all my colleagues who are deeply worried about the Christmas period ahead.
I did a thing! I passed my EdD viva with minor revisions 🎉
A huge thank you to the examiners,
@drajrichardson
and
@smeebut
for the opportunity to discuss my research!
And also to my
#StrathEdD
supervisors,
@ian_rivers
and
@jane_essex
, for their wisdom, patience, and support 💙
Used the mnemonic ‘never eat shredded wheat’ with a class today and they looked at me blankly [far more blankly than usual]. 🙃
I can’t be the only one who uses this? 🤷🏻♂️
This image from George Square is proof that Scottish teachers are not satisfied with current conditions. If you value education, you must value teachers!

I am beyond proud to share this video with you on behalf of staff, pupils, parents & carers at
@ClydebankHigh
.
This is our way of saying thank you to each and everyone of the incredible
#NHS
and care workers who risk everything to keep us safe!

Glasgow looking and sounding beautiful this afternoon! Incredible to be in the city centre with my boy and see George Square so full of life! Well done,
@prideglasgow
- have an amazing day!
#Pride2022
Received these flowers as a gift today, and honestly I’m blown away in the nicest possible way! I’ve never, not once in my life, ever been bought flowers.
The pupil who bought me them is from Yemen, and it got me thinking, is it a cultural thing here not to buy flowers for men?
Well, according to this headline, when you open the article, I teach at the 220th “best” school in Scotland.
** Laughed and then prepared to teach a class full of amazing young people about to embark on apprenticeships, college and university places.
Teachers!!! Please allow pupils to watch this match in your classrooms next week!!
They’ve waited their entire lives to see the men’s team in an international tournament - don’t deny them that!
Football fan or no football fan, they deserve to watch!
I had the absolute best day! A massive thank you to the amazing team at
@UniStrathclyde
for an incredible graduation experience and to all of the academic staff at
@StrathEDU
who have supported me every step of the way - a very special mention to
@ian_rivers
and
@jane_essex
✨
Not long now until [hopefully] this is available to read (for anyone who wants to), and I’m thinking about the multiple experiences that brought me to this point.
🧵…
I won’t tweet anything today to compromise my professionalism; but I will say that already (9.58am) there are huge question marks around the amendment of grades by the SQA, particularly in areas of higher deprivation.
Some personal/professional news to share... 📣
I’ve been appointed to the
@LawScot
’s Education & Training Committees (regulatory & policy) as a non-solicitor member.
I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and excited to play a supporting role in Scottish legal education.
CHS, you are beautiful! Thank you for the memories…
There’s nobody else I would have rather spent the last decade with than all of you…
Oh, and for the last time… “Be good and if you can’t be good, don’t get caught!”.
** Signing out (28 June 2022), P-Ham x
26,280 pupils and 2,788 teachers absent due to covid at the start of this week in Scotland…
It’s 46 days until the
@sqanews
exam diet. Every evening of an exam, I suggest that
@S_A_Somerville
should stand at her front door and clap for young people 👏🏻
Awfy proud teacher moment today finding out that one of the pupils from the
@CHSLegalStudies
class received an unconditional offer from UCAS for entrance to an LL.B course...
Another Bankie lawyer of the future - ready to change the world! 🤓👍🏻
I have no words, this is an outrage and I am beyond devastated for young people who have been unfairly impacted by this postcode lottery reduction of grades!
All I can say is that your teachers 100% have your back and this will not go unchallenged...
Here it is.
Poorest pupils Higher pass rate reduced by 15.2% between teacher estimate and statistical moderation.
Richest pupils rate reduced by just 6.9%.
Pupil: “Sir, have you ever had your Insta deactivated? You seem like the sort of person who would have their social media cancelled.”
Me: “Moi?”
Pupil: “Yeah, you’re a bit ranty.”
Me: 🥴
Can’t wait to get back to my classroom on Wednesday... It means I’ll be able to water the plant on my desk... And then do a ton of work I could do safely and easily from home...
Just discovered why my Son didn’t like the chicken nuggets I made for him yesterday 😭
In stereotype Dad fashion I even ate one to try and convince him that they were nice; hiding my disgust at the awful taste, assuming they were some hipster type recipe 😭
What’s crystal-clear from this (so far) is that
@Ross_Greer
actually gets it! He shows an understanding of what’s happening in schools; and it’s probably because he is listening to what pupils, parents and teachers are saying.
#bbcdn
Wee bit of professional/personal news.
Delighted to have been appointed to a school role at
@MorayHouse
, as Academic Coordinator (Placements & Partnerships).
Still very much the historian, but now with slightly more focus on people and places [in the present day 😜].
If you’re 20 years old, there’s been ten Chancellor of the Exchequers and seven Prime Ministers in your lifetime!
If you’re 40 years old, there’s been thirteen Chancellor of the Exchequers and eight Prime Ministers in your lifetime!
Let that sink in!
It’s not that I’m bored of the catch-up rhetoric, I’m actually offended by it!
Education in schools is not just pupils and teachers ploughing through course content, racing towards an examination finish-line.
Education is not the Olympics, and no one has to run!
Schools didn’t “close” during any previous lockdown,
@NicolaSturgeon
- some school buildings closed! Schools are more than bricks and mortar!
Oh, and the words “at all costs” is just callous towards young people, their families and educators.
Well, that’s the revisions been accepted on my
#StrathEdD
thesis. So, I guess that means you can call me doctor and not Shirley now.
Niche humour - if you know you know!
Two more days left of another term I won’t forget in a hurry! School staff and pupils again unsure if they will be returning during January…
Hubs? Phased? Blended? Remote?
It would be ‘nice’ to know!.. The words “at all costs” ringing in our ears!
Admittedly, I sometimes have a bit of fun at the expense of UfT. But, posts by their members (like the one below) only serve the purpose of encouraging anti-maskers.
A reminder of how dangerous this group are when it comes to spreading misinformation...
ANOTHER unconditional UCAS offer for a
@CHSLegalStudies
pupil today ☺️⭐️😊 This time for Criminology at
@StirUni
... Proud teacher! Did I mention I’m proud?
The people who will suffer the most [again] after 19 July will be those reliant on public transport, those who can’t work from home, those who don’t work in spacious well-ventilated environments and those who provide vital face-to-face care for the most vulnerable in our society.
Whatever the announcement today, there has to be clarity for pupils, parents, teachers & families around the gathering of evidence for SQA.
A clear, understandable (not open to interpretation) message that will be applied consistently in every local authority & in every school!
Pupil: “Sir, can I have a pencil?”
Me: “Sure thing... Catch.”
* The throw was poorly executed.
** The pupil did not catch the pencil.
*** The pencil went out an open window.
I teach at 230 in the ‘how rich/poor is your school’ league table.
Congratulations to the 229 schools ranked wealthier; you can all have access to the life boats before my pupils and I attempt to enter them 🥰
The folk saying “good luck” to young people for their exam results today are absolutely nailing it!
It is, for too many pupils, about “luck”. The “luck” of where you were born, the “luck” of where you live and the “luck” of how the ACM model was interpreted by your school.
On display at the
@ArgyllsMuseum
. A note that at first glance may seem somewhat insignificant, but upon closer inspection is in fact of genuine significance.

Not quitting the day job or anything, but I am delighted to have been offered a role as an Associate Tutor with the School of Education at
@UofGlasgow
.
#UofG
More awesome news from
@CHSLegalStudies
, and I won’t stop shouting from the rooftops each time it happens 🙋🏻♂️
Today, an S6 pupil with an unconditional from
@CaledonianNews
to study the LL.B at
@GCULaw
. Coupled with the existing unconditional offer she already has from
@StirUni
🤓
See these iceberg graphics with all the stuff that teachers ‘don’t see’. Give us peace, honestly!
Teachers know full well their pupils and their struggles. Schools are supporting young people and their families every which way they can. To be blunt, these graphics are an insult!
Teachers in Scotland are so accustomed to the incompetence of the SQA that covering for the uncertainty they create is part of their workload!
We have normalised the ineptitude of an organisation that is so woeful its own Wikipedia article has a section labelled “controversy”.
I’m not at Clapham, so what I say is based on what I perceive...
But if Rangers fans (of which I’m one) can march and congregate in George Square with the protection of
@policescotland
, why can’t there be a vigil for
#SarahEverard
without these tactics by the
@metpoliceuk
?
Yeah, you might have sympathy for the Modern Studies Teachers at the moment, but please spare a thought for the History Teachers who will one day have to teach this cluster***k as an essay question!
