The problem with virtual conferences is you still have to keep the rest of your work and life going, rather than escape into conference world for a week - not so easy when you have screaming kids that need you when you are meant to be live online - how are people managing this?
I’m honoured to announce I have been promoted to Professor of Developmental Biophysics
@UCL
. I would like to thank all my lab members, collaborators, colleagues, mentors and family for their continued support! None of this would be possible without them!
It’s finally official! I’m delighted to announce that I have been awarded an MRC Senior Non Clinical Fellowship to work on mechanical robustness during development and repair. Thank you
@The_MRC
for the continued support! And thanks to my fab lab, here celebrating with dim sum!
Incredibly honoured to be awarded the
@Official_BSCB
Women in Cell Biology Early Career Medal! Thank you for recognising the importance of mechanobiology in cell biology. And thank you to my great lab who did all the hard work!
I had to strategically plan when to have kids to minimise the “penalties”, but scientist mothers shouldn’t have to do this… the system needs to change so that women scientists are not penalised for wanting to be mothers as well.
Enjoying a day to myself between conferences. People often forget the joys of
#academia
, travelling around the world, meeting amazing people, not to mention the intellectual freedom and flexibility to balance work and family!

Annual Meeting in San Diego on 15/2. Congrats Yanlan! 🙌🔝
BREAKING NEWS:
The 2021
#NobelPrize
in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian “for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”
Received this beautiful medal in the post today! Thank you
@RoyalMicroSoc
for the recognition, I’m incredibly honoured. Looking forward to

A birthday present to myself - a new office to celebrate a new decade for me and a new decade of the Mao Lab! Don’t you just love the orange velvet armchairs?! We all deserve an office you actually want to spend time in!
Thank you
@ListerInstitute
for this
#ListerPrize
! The fully flexible £250k funding has made a huge difference to my lab and career! What a wonderful scheme, everyone eligible should apply!
Today we had the honour of joining
@YanlanMao
for her much-delayed
#ListerPrize
presentation
@LMCB_UCL
. And what a presentation it was, from an incredibly worthy Fellow!
Congratulations on all your work to date, Yanlan, from all of us at the Lister Institute.
So sad to hear this news. It was Lewis Wolpert’s French Flag model of morphogens that got me into developmental biology. Also when I was a PhD student he sat next to me at a conference breakfast because I was all alone. What an incredible scientist and nice man.
I am very sad to hear that the great developmental biologist Lewis Wolpert died this morning at the age of 91. He was a giant in my field, and will be missed.
Grant deadlines in August (with only 10 days notice) totally discriminates anyone with children (and those who have a life!) Funders and faculties, please don’t do this!

Looking forward to virtually receiving my

Medal later today (and of course to giving the Winner’s talk!) Hope to “see” lots of you in the audience! Promise you will see me dance the next time we meet in person!
After almost 2 weeks away on 100% scientist mode, I’m back to 50/50 scientist/mum mode. Girls requested wonton chicken soup this morning as we are all feeling a bit under the weather. So I made this in between zoom calls!

Many people take "non-traditional" career paths in academia.
@Brixius_Simone
,
@mm5200
,
@MoeNeuro
and I did! We wrote for
@PLOSBiology
about how non-linear careers are increasingly common, but funding agencies and search committees penalize these paths.
Happy
#LunarNewYear
! Wishing everyone 年年高 (higher every year) with these home made dates and walnut 年糕 (sticky rice cake)! And of course dumplings (veggie today) and a feast!

If you want me to review something for you, for free, don’t set the deadline on a bank holiday (Good Friday) and don’t send me a rude e-mail the day after the deadline after I sent you an e-mail (which you clearly did not check) saying I’ll send the review after my Easter break!
End of an era! So emotional saying goodbye to
@AllonsMe
! The joys of being a PI is to have so many wonderful and talented people in the lab, but when they leave, they leave a hole in my heart, every time! Why can’t I keep them forever?! We need

in science..
Who thinks cooking is like doing experiments? Missing the lab, so will be posting one new “experiment” a day! Today: braised pork belly with preserved vegetables 梅菜扣肉!
Schools closed for likely weeks, de-stressing by making my 2yo her birthday cake (matcha sponge). Good luck to all parents for the next few weeks / months...
Congrats to all the

awardees. But how many diverse and talented scientists did we lose simply because they did their first PhD too long ago? It’s good to see more women but there’s more to diversity than gender,sign this if you agree:

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing, and the same proposal was rejected elsewhere. In fact, this was the first successful grant for 2+ years! You just don’t hear about the many failed attempts. So don’t give up, keep trying!
