Married to Kourtney! Edtech leader living near Disney World. If found please return me to my wife, to Epcot, to Costco, or to a CDW building. Opinions my own.
I'm just going to shout it into the void:
There is not a teacher shortage.
There is a SALARY SHORTAGE.
There is a WORK AND LIFE BALANCE SHORTAGE.
There is an EMPATHY SHORTAGE.
There is a BEING TREATED LIKE A PROFESSIONAL ADULT shortage.
I said what I said.
I saw a post:
โWhat can teachers do to fix the teacher shortage?โ
Yโallโฆno. NO. It is not the job of teachers to fix the teacher shortage. The onus should absolutely NOT be on teachers to fix the teacher shortage.
Iโve typed and deleted and typed and deleted but I got the dreaded call that my MomMom passed away this morning. I havenโt stopped sobbing. The sky was pink when I woke up this morning. Pink was her favorite color (as is mine). She was the best. l already miss her. โค๏ธ
When I was student teaching, I extended a due date for a student who had just lost a family member.
Upon hearing this, my mentor teacher pulled me aside and told me that Iโm โnot here to be their friend,โ Iโm supposed to be here to be their teacher.
I think about this a lot.
The lawsuit with the teacher in VA where the six-year-old shot her *intentionally* is about to be a landmark case in education. Mark my words.
For so long, some administrators have been too afraid to act--and all at the expense of educator well-being and safety.
Help a girl born in 1993 out: typing classes were a thing?!
By the time I was in elementary school we had a โcomputer applicationsโ class that taught us how to use old school Microsoft, navigate search engines, etcโฆwe learned how to type from CD software like Carmen Sandiego!
If I see one more video of a teacher doing a special handshake for every one of his students with the comment section raving how โheโs so inspiring!โ I am burning my house to the ground.
Handshakes do NOT make a great teacher! Unless their content area is handshakes!
The most frightening part of this is that the mom was trying to use this as justification to pull her daughter out of school and begin the home schooling process.
Miss maโam, if you donโt know the branches of government at your big age, you shouldnโt be home schooling.

That TikTok trend where kids essentially steal from teachers and vandalize the school has reached my school site and y'all, I don't even deal with discipline and I am absolutely enraged about this. I am thinking of all the extra unnecessary work this is creating for custodians.
If you ever see my mentor from student teaching who tried to bar me from entering the profession, could you please relay that I have the masters degree she could never attain and have been crushing it in the classroom since day one? Thanks!!

Yesterday, someone told me that having my mic muted was disrespectful.
There was no reason for my mic to be on. It was a "sit and get" session.
My mic was muted because my space heater is a bit noisy.
I always thought: mic off when you're not talking = good.
Thoughts?
Some teachers give extra credit to kids who bring in extra supplies like glue sticks, scissors, paper, etc.
I feel like this sends a wrong message...not only is the credit not truly earned but it puts lower income students at a disadvantage. Thoughts?
A post on another one of my socials is from a woman who is a teacher; she is seeking advice after her husband said that teaching was glorified babysitting and has been mocking her for her profession.
My advice? Get a new husband.
Whew, the absolute AUDACITY of that dude.
Sometimes I share a picture of me and my wife and folks ask "where are your husbands?"
Bonus points if we're in a picture TOGETHER with wedding dresses on and they say it's "goals" that "two best friends got married on the same day."
...is it not clear? I'm married to a woman.
So yโall know how Iโm part of a mom group? And I donโt know how I got added, but I stay in it for the drama?
(And if you donโt know, now you know!)
I jumped in and commented today.
This woman is FURIOUS that her daughter is learning about the branches of government.

If anything, I feel like this pandemic has revealed that a five day work week (and honestly, a five day school week) has not been and continues to be unsustainable. From what I see, people dig the asynchronous day and break in the middle of the week.
Anyone else feel the same?
I recently put in my resignation.
Everything is fine and thereโs no reason to worry. Iโll be more than okayโI just accepted an amazing position at my dream company.
Life is good. โค๏ธ
Getting upset that paraprofessionals and contractors get recognized during Teacher Appreciation Week because theyโre not โreal teachersโ has the same energy as folks who think adoptive parents, step-parents, and foster parents arenโt โreal parents.โ It strikes me as so petty.
Some of you already know, so it's time to share publicly: I've accepted a new role as a STEM instructional coach!
I'm excited, nervous, and hungry (literally and figuratively). I've wanted a coaching position for so long and am excited to start this new journey in my career!
Iโm just now getting caught up on the news out of Indiana and yโall, my mouth is as open as my eyes right now.
You hear that sound? Itโs the sound of educators leaving the profession because at this point, it seems that these laws are DELIBERATELY created to make folks exit.
Wow, I am coming home more tired than I ever have before. And the consensus in my building is that Iโm not the only one.
I feel like workplaces (regardless of if youโre in a school or not) SEVERELY underestimated the emotional, mental, and physical toll of being back in person.
It was clear that the mother was uncomfortable with the content because she did not want her daughter to be informed, AND didnโt want her daughter outpacing her in her own understanding of the content.
It was bizarre. And when I see bizarre things, I canโt just sit back.
6/
Anybody else think it's super bizarre that we were just expected to go back into schools as of everything was normal...?
There seems to be no public acknowledgement of collective loss or turmoil. Just "HEY welcome back and now we're all here again, it's like we're *normal* now!"
This general lack of empathy from my mentor teacher was par for the course, but it was astounding nonetheless. Apparently, showing empathy is poor educator conduct.
The student just lost a family member and her main concern was whether or not they turned a diorama in on time.
Alright, I have to say it.
Iโm seeing folks boycott going to states like FL and TX for conferences. 100% fair.
But what I donโt like seeing is people stating that ALL folks who live in those states are 100% down with whatโs going on. It couldnโt be farther from the truth.

@DrRichiMD
Unfortunately, this happens to educators a bunch. A parent spotted me one time shopping at Home Depot in shorts. It was summertime. She came up to me and called me unprofessional. I've since left the classroom, but still think about this from time to time.
Abby Zwerner, the teacher in Virginia who was shot by her 6-year-old student, has filed a lawsuit Monday seeking $40 million in damages from school officials, accusing them of gross negligence.
I hope she gets every single penny.

Mom made the post around 2 hours ago and itโs been blowing up with comments ever since. Weโre all basically saying the same thing: โwhat in the Jimmy Crack Corn is going on here?!โ
Mom hasnโt responded to any of the commentsโฆ
โฆyet.
So now we wait.

Racist? You don't belong in this profession.
Anti-LGBTQ+? You don't belong in this profession.
Xenophobic? You don't belong in this profession.
We teach kids from all walks of life, all the time. Did you not read the fine print?
The teacher in Virginia who was shot by the six year old is suing the school district.
I hope she sues the HELL out of that district, gets a very nice payout, and gets to live life peacefully afterward. Itโs what she deserves. The school showed negligence beyond compare.
I shared that โteaching is harder than being in the military!โ article with Kourtney and oooooh she has thoughts.
Her main sticking point has always been: in the military, if thereโs someone acting up or not following directions, they donโt last. In fact, they CANโT last.
1/
I will repeat:
I am not a fan of the black and white thinking going around that purports school = unsafe/home = safe. Although health is paramount, it is a VERY privileged standpoint that to think all kids have safe and loving homes.
I said what I said.
Shifting from "cancel culture" to "consequence culture" is a great way to think about it.
Were you cancelled or are you now just facing the consequences of your own crappy actions?
Bloop.
Greg Abbott has imitated a hostile takeover of the local school district in Houston, TX โ taking control away from the local school board so that itโs now run by the state.
Parent and activist Lauren Ashley read the superintendent for FILTH

Last night, a teacher on this platform stated she loves and supports all students while referring to me as โthe black queerโ in nearly the same breath.
This kind of dehumanizing language is not only absolutely ridiculous in 2020, but has no place in education.
โฆit took her THREE HOURS to prep herself on branches of government so that she could support her seven year old child for a quizโsomething she also mentioned in the post.
Yโall have been around long enough to know that I donโt play when it comes to education.
9/
@Doug_Lemov
This is a horrible take.
I was visiting a classroom not too long ago and even the teacher's camera was off. The engagement was OFF THE CHARTS. Purposeful use of edtech and relationship building makes this possible. It's not all about having your camera on.
I know I am absolutely late on this, but am I reading this correctly that a six year old shot their teacher in school yesterday?
Iโm beside myself. Iโm standing here staring at the wall.
I know that I was tired last night because yโallโฆthis is the โalarmโ I set.
Iโm lucky Iโm a naturally early riser because what if I relied on this?!?!????
I had a conversation moments ago with my director about how thereโs going to be a huge reckoning of educators who wonโt be coming back to their buildings after break.
She said: โwell, there are tons of openings at schools!โ
I said: โno, I mean, theyโre LEAVING leaving.โ
1/
The comments were firm and clear: you as an adult not knowing the branches of government is a non-starter, and you wanting your daughter to not know about the branches of government is also a non-starter.
Some folks were kind enough to share resources to help.

I just received a gender reveal party invitation that explicitly said the theme would be โhandyman or housewife.โ

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS?!
To my knowledge, this woman is still in the classroom. She is still teaching.
Her rationale for her behavior was that โsheโs done this for years.โ My response was: โso what?โ
Doing something for years and treating peopleโour young people!!!!!โlike that doesnโt make it okay.
Can we start a thread of small things yโall may do to help yourself feel better when youโre stressed?
I can start: I wash all the bedding and make the bed. Even on my worst days, I still deserve to sleep on crisp, clean sheets.
Also, Iโve found drinking ice cold water helps!
Every so often I feel the need to clarify my profile picture:
It's me and my wife.
Yes, I am married to a woman.
Her name is Kourtney and she is wonderful; she shows up from time to time on here.
She is on the LEFT.
I am on the RIGHT.
We're both cute.
That woman who snarkily asked me what I'm going to be doing this past weekend because I don't have kids just asked me when I am going to get married "for real" and my response was "I don't know, (name), when are you going to stop being awful for real?"
Happy Wednesday! ๐
This is the same woman who also judged me because I wasnโt getting in at 5 AM (school started at 7:40-ish) like she was, nor was I leaving at 6:30 PM (school ended at 2:30-ish) like she was. She saw that as a sign of not putting in enough work instead of working efficiently.
So I guess it needs to be said AGAIN ๐:
If you are having a conference, a workshop, a panel, ANYTHING that gives a platform for multiple people to speak, and there are no POC/BIPOC speaking or contributing, shut the whole damn thing down. Replan and rebook.
Itโs 2020.
Yesterday I spoke with someone who said lowering standards for teachers is great because โit widens the pool!โ
When I asked if heโd like for someone without a degree, credentials, or experience to teach his kid, he said no.
My brother in astrology, you cannot have it both ways.
The sheer amount of educators that have reached out to me within the past week seeking to leave the classroom and become coaches, consultants, or work in edtech shows that not only are schools going to see a mass exodus at the end of the year, but recruiters are in for a doozy.
Iโve said it before and Iโll say it again: it is 100% okay for an educator to have a personal life on top of their professional life.
โTeacherโ should be your job, not your entire identity.
Go out with your friends and family. Sleep in once in a while. Have fun.
Many of my white friends are becoming moms/dads now and theyโre already making me a little nervous with their refusal to โget politicalโ or โtalk about issuesโ with their future children.
White parents who ignore issues raise white children who ignore issues. The system goes on.
A friend-of-a-friend asked for advice as to why his job search wasnโt going well and I was honest and told him he really needs to clean up his social media.
He then screamed at me, saying nobody can control what he posts.
So, yeah. The call is coming from inside the house.
Help:
Kourt and I were invited to a wedding. No formal invitation yet, but bride and groom are asking for a $150 contribution per person to pay for the wedding and an additional $100 cash gift to pay for the honeymoon.
I get that times are tough but this seems odd. Thoughts?
@Doug_Lemov
Not even to mention the students that don't feel comfortable having their cameras on because they don't feel comfortable sharing their environments, or there are distractions around them, or maybe there is a dog barking in the background...
Horrible take and a privileged take.
We hold the meetings, nobody shows.
We send the emails, nobody responds.
We reach out, nobody gets back to us...
...and then we get told "they didn't know."
At what point do I stop giving grace, say "screw it," and go run around outside with my dog? Somebody please help.
โฆnot to the point where a child needs to know everything about it. And, spelling the branches is not a requirement. They just need to have basic, baseline knowledge of what each branch does.
Momโs still furious and states that she herself doesnโt even know the branches.

Upon my departure I wrote a review of my experience and to my knowledge, she isnโt allowed to have another student teacher again. I did what I could but feel like it still wasnโt enough, especially given that sheโs still working with students and probably doing the same nonsense.
Good morning to everyone except folx who put โinner city educatorโ or โtitle 1 educatorโ in their bios as an attempt to garner sympathy or respect.
My comment wasโฆdifferentโฆbecause I focused on the home school aspect and encouraged her to use her critical thinking skills (whatever may be thereโฆ) and really ask herself if itโs worth it to pull her this late in the year AND if she could be a capable teacher if..

I love hearing snippets of the conversations my wife has during meetings. She DOES ๐๐ฝNOT ๐๐ฝ PLAY. ๐๐ฝ
โYou are speaking from a place of privilege. Iโm going to need you to stop.โ
โI thought you lack empathy, now I KNOW you lack empathy.โ
โThis is a waste of my time.โ
When I told my wife (who is not in education) about the details of this story, her first reaction was:
"It sounds like administration didn't want to call the parents."
It's to the point where even folks outside of our profession recognize how messed up this is.
TODAY IS THE DAY! It's our first anniversary! ๐๐๐
Especially now, it's hard to believe that just one year ago we went to New Orleans to get married and celebrate with our closest friends and family. Such a beautiful day.
.
...also I am craving some beignets right now.
People not in education: Education should be ran more like a business!!
Teachers: Okay, with that logic, Iโm leaving education for another job with more compensation, a healthier work environment, and it treats me like a professional.
People: Oh wait we didnโt mean it like THAT
Judging by the age of her child my guess is that her daughter is in 1st or 2nd grade. Mom is mad that her daughter is being quizzed on the ins and outs of the branches of government, including the spellings of those branches.
I, and many others, immediately became skeptical.

Friday thread:
My wifeโs name is Kourtney. A school not in this state (?) has confused her with *another* Kourtney who is interviewing for a position there. There was an email mixup (by one number) and they sent Kourt the school policies for preview.
And theyโre BANANAS.
It's almost contract renewal season for educators.
Remember that you do NOT need to stay in a toxic workplace.
If you're unhappy or undervalued, it's time to plan your exit strategy.
You are worth respect and should be treated like the professional that you are.
State standards are publicly posted and since I am continuously shocked at how people will reveal their entire locations online, I (and others) were able to search and confirm that YES, branches of government is a standard covered for that state at that age, but itโs...

Iโve said it before and Iโll say it again: itโs so wack that we work for 8+ hours and then come home and only have a few hours until the next day starts up again.
This tweet was inspired by me seeing red after hearing "we have a teacher shortage." I've been hearing this for ages--if we KEEP having so called "teacher shortages" and say nothing EXCEPT "we have a teacher shortage," why aren't we looking into what causes said "shortages?"
I had a tough time sleeping last night. I keep thinking of the teacher who got shot by her six year old student. Iโm glad sheโs on the mend but Iโm shook that a six year old had access to a gun like that. Every time I close my eyes, itโs all I can picture. And itโs heartbreaking.
So, I mentioned not too long ago that most empires last 250 years before they either explode or implode. This isnโt just me saying it; empire specialists have confirmed it.
The United States is about three years from the 250 year mark.
Just saying.
In an early chat with an old colleague today, I had a moment where I really had to push her thinking. She works at school where thereโs a lot of high income families, and she expressed to me that her students were exhibiting โTitle I behaviors.โ I stopped in my tracks.

It's shutdown week at work.
This means that we all have the week off.
We didn't have to take PTO/vacation/sick leave for it. We literally just all have the week off to rest and recharge.
More organizations should do this.
But, for now, it's time to get ready for my flight!โ๏ธ
Can somebody please explain to me why a superintendent would need a...
1.) Clothing budget
2.) Car budget
...when their salaries are already 200K+?
What am I missing? Why do they need a budget for clothing or a car? Educators do not get budgets for clothing or a car.
Iโd like some honesty from educators:
We know thereโs a lot going on for EVERYBODY right now. Do you know what your admin are doing? Would it be helpful for you if your school leaders (principals, APs, etc) shared whatโs happening on a more candid basis with you?
Teaching students of color does not make you a decent person.
Saying you โdonโt see colorโ does not make you a decent person.
ACCEPTING ACCOUNTABILITY MAKES YOU A DECENT PERSON.
And if you are called out for problematic behavior and refuse to learn, then YOU are the problem.
Hey
@educationweek
:
Iโm curious as to what the rationale is for hiring this person to write an op ed for your website. Not only is she openly attacking a fellow educator, but calling social justice โcrapโ is alarming alongside your Black voices statements.
Thoughts/comments?
4 years ago today, Kourtney and I got married in front of 30 friends and family members in New Orleans, LA! โค๏ธ happy anniversary to my wife who doesnโt have a Twitter account but still looks at my page from time to time! ๐
Love you, Kourt!
Being in classrooms and hearing students go "hey, where's X?" and their classmates casually saying "oh, they have COVID so they're out" is equal parts sad, infuriating, and frustrating.
We shouldn't be in this position.

Iโm 100% for STEM education (Iโm a math teacher!) but humanities are just as important.
STEM means nothing if you canโt read, write, or articulate what youโve done or learned.
We always talk about putting STEM in the humanities. Why not put a little humanities into the STEM?
My district has announced it will be going 100% remote in the fall with an option to look at a hybrid model in January.
This will certainly present some unique opportunities and challenges as a new instructional coach.
Iโm going to listen to the Hercules soundtrack and think.
