Today we are flood detectives! Big thanks to our instructors Mike and Dustin for teaching us indirect measurement techniques where we use surveying and hydraulic modeling to measure floods that can’t be measured directly during the flow event.

Our #fieldphotofriday is from the Cement Creek watershed, where #USGS is working to assess groundwater age. Connor and Jackson collected a water-quality sample from the collapsed Big Colorado Mine tunnel, where iron-rich water has formed a large terrace deposit.

Check out this historic gage on the #GreatSaltLake operated by the @USGS_UT . This gage has daily water level data published back to 1847! Pictured is the gage in its current form and a copy of the original manuscript published in 1890 when John Wesley Powell was our Director.

#DYK that #Colorado has the largest amount of #USGS employees located in one state? There are over 1,200 @USGS with most of them located in the Denver metro area. However, we also have offices also in #FortCollins , #Pueblo , #Durango , and #Grand Junction! #govlove

When #groundwater is sampled, we use pumps and tubing to lift the water to the surface. Once we are done, we then have to go through a complex process of decontaminating the pumps and tubing to ensure they are clean for the following sample. #waterquality is a lot of work!
