SOLDIER PROFILE – SERGEANT FIRST CLASS ALWYN C. CASHE, MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT Born in 1970 SFC Cashe was infantryman who served during 1991’s Operation DESERT STORM and 2003’s Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, earning a posthumous Medal of Honor for his actions in that conflict.

18 JULY 1863 WILLIAM CARNEY, FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN RECEIVES MEDAL OF HONOR #USArmy At Fort Wagner, 54th Mass SGT William Carney took up the National Colors when the color sergeant was shot, planted the flag and fought off numerous attempts by the Confederates to capture it.

21 NOVEMBER 1970 - SON TAY RAID - #VietnamWar Shortly after 0200, six long-range U.S. Air Force search and rescue helicopters landed 58 Army Special Forces soldiers at the Son Tay prisoner of war (POW) compound, 23 miles west of Hanoi.

NATIONAL BUFFALO SOLDIERS DAY #Armyhistory #USArmy Buffalo soldiers were African American soldiers who mainly served on the Western frontier following the American Civil War. They were originally members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments formed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.

#AfricanAmericanHistory SGT Henry Johnson received the long-overdue posthumous award of the Medal of Honor on 2 June 2015. On 15 May 1918, PVT Johnson's outpost was attacked. Suffering 21 wounds, he used his rifle, grenades, and knife to prevent Germans from taking his position.

2 SEPTEMBER 1945 - VICTORY OVER JAPAN (V-J) 75th ANNIVERSARY - #WWII Japan formally surrendered to the Allies in a ceremony aboard the battleship USS MISSOURI in Tokyo Harbor. Although they surrendered on 15 August, the instrument of surrender documents were signed 2 September.

In 1929, US Army Air Corps Lt Gen John MacCready asked a New York-based medical equipment manufacturer, to create sunglasses to ban the sun rays and reduce the headaches and nausea experienced pilots. Ray Ban was born. By WWII the stylish sunglasses were worn by non-pilots too.

20 June 1924, WWII hero Audie Murphy is born in Kingston, Texas. Murphy was the most decorated Soldier of #WWII . He received the Medal of Honor at the age of 19 when he held off a company of German Soldiers for an hour and led a counterattack while wounded. @USArmy

TRIVIA TUESDAY - NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN IN THE ARMY First Lieutenant Julia Nashanany Reeves was a Potawatomie Indian from Crandon, Wisconsin who joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1942. She worked in one of the first medical units in the Pacific.

18 JULY 1863 - AFRICAN-AMERICAN REGT 54TH MASSACHUSETTS ATTACK FORT WAGNER #USArmy Despite withering cannon and rifle fire, they sustained their charge reaching the top of the fort. Eventually forced to pull back, they proved that African-American soldiers could fight heroically.

#TBT #MOH In 1996 the Army reviewed all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in #WWII "to determine whether any should be upgraded to the Medal of Honor." In June of 2000, 22 were awarded the MOH.

On 14 August 1913, Sergeant Vernon L. Burge officially received rating as the U.S. Army's first enlisted pilot. As a private first class in the Signal Corps in 1907, Burge was assigned to the Aeronautical Division of the Signal Corps at Fort Myer, Virginia.

The conditions of U.S. POWs held by the North Vietnamese dramatically improved after the raid. The only helicopter lost was the one purposely crash-landed in the compound. Most of the raiders were members of the 6th and 7th Special Forces, stationed at Fort Bragg, NC.
