Bob Solow and I were colleagues at MIT in early 1980s. He helped me obtain fellowship from Sloan Foundation to spend 1983-84 at Churchill College, Cambridge. He, his wife Bobby, and I were neighbors in the Churchill Flats at the college. I have great memories of a great man.

Mexico is one the few nations not requiring a negative COVID-19 test to enter the country. Confirmed cases are now at the highest levels since January, but actual cases are probably much higher because of lack of testing. ALMO wants public schools to reopen the end of August.

I tell my former grad students to celebrate when they submit a paper, not when one is accepted. It is like pushing ping pong balls into a pipe. You push in enough and they start falling out at the other end. It is important to do a good job revising and resubmitting papers.

Great advice! My version of this: focus on input rather than output. When exactly you reach a research milestone depends on luck. Motivation is easier to sustain when you focus on making the small steps you can take every day to get there.

Brazilian government needs to recognize COVID-19 as a major public health and economic problem. It cannot make expenditures to buy more vaccines and make more deals with pharmaceuticals because of spending ceilings in the budget. Expenditures on vaccines will pay for themselves!

Possibility of inefficiency in OG economies comes from double infinity of consumers and commodities, not any sort of incomplete market or externality. The classic reference is K. Shell, "Notes on the Economics of Infinity," JPE, 1971. Sorry if you do not find infinity intuitive.

@erinhengel My first Ph.D. advisee finished in 1981. Since then, I have been the advisor or co-advisor of 113 students who have finished their Ph.D.s, 33 of whom have been women. I am willing to bet that I am the economist with the most female students. (I have another finishing this year.)

What to do when a paper is rejected? Read the referees' reports carefully. Then revise the paper carefully and submit it to another journal as soon as possible. The important thing is keep revising and resubmitting. Acceptances involve luck, revising and resubmitting do not.

It seems that this year will be a good year to finish a PhD in economics! It is still early in the economic job market season, but there are indications that a lot of US academic institutions are searching for economists, not just in comparison with 2020 but also with 2019.
