(Un)popular opinion: Italian academia is on the right track, and it has been for a while. Competitive and attractive. Many good places, old and new. Arrangements (teaching) still rigid but becoming flexible. Salary non-negotiable, but tax credit is big.
Covid took granma. Strong woman, raised four children alone after granpa died in 1958. Here is them getting married on April 28, 1945, the same day Mussolini was shot dead. Covid took her son, too. She died not knowing. I like to think they are reunited now.

JMCs: here goes my most important unsolicited advice. Nothing will happen between Dec 24th and Jan 2nd. Take some time off. For real. Get away if you can. Recharge. I did so and it still stands as the best work-related decision I ever made.
One day folks will realize that being able to write down a Bellman equation or to comment on p-values does not come with a universal understanding of human nature. I am looking forward to that day.

Imperfect competition in labor market can lower wages, employment, welfare. Tons of new research and policy focus in the US. What about low and middle-income countries? Employers' market power matters for inclusive growth. 1/n

I am all for economics reaching out to other disciplines and engage in fruitful debate, but after seeing lately how MDs first and historians now engage with top quality econ work I have to say I am having doubts. And we are supposed to be the rude snobby self-praising ones.

Unpopular opinion, coming from devo perspective. We should write less about the impact of COVID-19 specifically and do more/new research on structural issues - poverty, inequality, gender gap, gov't deficit, debt. Because COVID-19 will (hopefully) pass but that stuff remains.

Every single day I spend abroad I am reminded that there is one occupation where labor productivity in Italy must be about 3x the one in other countries: barista-coffee maker. Differences in product quality would even bias downwards.
"Good morning Professor, I just wanted to thank you for the class today, I really enjoyed it, and it did make me more interested in economics! This course overall will be one of those I remember the most from my three years at McGill" - Believe it or not I taught IV today 😱

As debate over minimum wage heats up, check this excellent paper by

and Persico. Workers' productivity increases after minimum wage rise, effect going through an efficiency wage mechanism (FWIW, this is also my experience with RAs).
Granted, most of us have had their fair bit of awful interactions. But let's not forget about the good ones! Some meetings or seminars have literally changed the way I see the world. There are generous, brilliant, inclusive, amazing mentors in the discipline.
Very happy about this 🙂 The vast majority of people in the profession put a lot of work into referee reports, and so do journal Editors. We should celebrate this more. Nasty R2-types are just noise 😉. Thumbs up
